Most poems tend to be metaphoric and not literal. Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money); broadly: figurative language--compare simile Here's an example: Broken heart; broken heart is a metaphor because it literally doesn’t mean that you're heart is broken, it's a cliché thats come to be known and used quite frequently, a metaphor like broken heart suggests a deeper meaning that you feel torn, sad, depressed, gloomy, empty...
