Mafia Drive Gunner
Hey guys, this was brought up in the Welcome Thread topic by me, but I decided to make a topic, because people will look at the title of that Topic and just say, "It's been done". Instead of a welcome thread or topic or w/e, we could have a PM that is automatically sent to someone when they join. Not only does it give some useful links, but it teaches them how to use the PM system, so we don't get topics and stuff about things that could be sorted out by PM. Something like below. ------------------------- Hello and welcome to GTAforums.com. So that you get accustomed to these forums it is strongly advised to check out the (insert rules topic link), the (another useful help/FAQ link) (brief explanation goes here) the (newbs guide for n00bs or something similar) a guide made just for you, so that you can get to know the place easier, here we have the (insert gang help topic here) (brief explanation), the (Gang rules), (Brief explanation). That is about all you need to know to get ahead quick in these forums. The gang rules etc. are not compulsory, but if you would like to join one of our virtual gangs, please view the gang links before doing so, as they provide vital info about joining them etc. (Outing Note) ----------------- That would just about do it. If we were to do this, it would effectively eradicate I'm New threads, because if this idea was to go ahead, a rule could be made against those topics, and teach people not to make an attention whoring topic and that they need to ease their way into it with well structured posts etc. In other words: But the positive aspect of this is that a member has to get noticed by posting good posts and be a general asset to the forum, not bymaking a lazy welcome topic but by posting. So, me thinks : go ahead. This is the sort of stuff this idea will get rid of: Link. As you can see, it is just the same type of post over and over again, but in different words. As I said in the other topic, it would also take a bit of negativity away from new members who get beaten to a pulp if they put a foot out of line in their welcome topic. That's about all I have, I hope this can make the forums better and that this is considered as a good idea for the forums to go forward. -MDG Edited May 7, 2005 by Mafia Drive Gunner
GT-1
Something very similar was been discussed over the last few days regarding this situation.
BigGamer
I brought up this idea sometime last year, but it was completely ignored. However, I still think it's a very good idea.
Vin.
As I said in the welcome topic, this is a good idea. Lets hope the staff go through with it. Good luck with getting it cleared.
Luke2004
Good idea as it would be good if the new users get sent a PM with all the useful links of getting used to the forums.
Chunky Lee Chong
If we were to do this, it would effectively eradicate I'm New threads, because if this idea was to go ahead, a rule could be made against those topics, and teach people not to make an attention whoring topic and that they need to ease their way into it with well structured posts etc. Just because I was welcomed by the forum robot doesn't mean I would read the rules and thus wouldn't stop me from making a topic to whore myself to the public. Mafia Drive Gunner
But with that said, did you take into account that there would be a new rule about making such topics. If they were to make one, would they not get verbally warned. It would all gel together to put this into practice. It wouldn't be made as though it was by a forum robot, but it would be made so it is how it is, user friendly, and if possible, we could make it so that if they were to reply to that message with any enquiries, it would go to a mod. @ BigGamer: I too bought this up a year or two ago, but to no avail. I thought that with the rush of members at GTA: SA time, that would be a good time to bring it up, but I never got around to it. I too was ignored or turned down. And with the amount of Welcome topics going around right now, I thought, "Why not?". -MDG
Kotsudaira
I had an idea like that about a month ago. Didn't post it though. I shared it on IRC I think. I think it's a good idea. Hotmail does the same thing. I think I told eggburt about it on IRC. Didn't come up with a format for it like MDG did though. -Kotsudaira
