Nah I actually remembered Tenpenny telling CJ why they were dumb and Ballas got brains but I forgot which mission it was. I initially thought it was "Catalyst" but when I loaded the game to check it out, I realised it was outside the donut-shop he said that so I checked the cut-scene of "Grey Imports" and bingo !!

 

Anyway, as I passed it is a free turn.

yes, the dumbbells do cause you to stop working out for the day; however, i think the question goes further than that. i'm not about to start the game up, as i'm about to go to sleep, but i think after you fight a gym trainer, it says you've worked out enough, so maybe the three things are the 'muscle upgrade' workout machines (bench-press and dumbbell curl), the 'stamina upgrade' workout machines (treadmill and exercise bike), and the 'fighting ability upgrade' workout (gym trainer fight)

 

i could be totally off though, but whatever.
