I think Avakian is better off in Paris. No offense but the guy is missing a few bricks.

Wow I am suprised... no one has actually mentioned Socialism... why not?

In a perfect world Socialism is the ideal solution.

Better suited is, perhaps, a function of history and culture of any given region, This does not necessarily mean what has worked in the past is applicable in the present and future. I know that that wasnt what you were insinuating, but it leads on to my next point:

Maybe it isnt about what is best, maybe it is about what is least worse.

Perfection and a state of optimal governance is something none of us will ever see. We may read about it (usually written by either political philosophers, or dictators who control the press wink.gif), but were not likely to see it in action any time soon.

Quoted for an overwhelming amount of truth.

While we can talk about theory and philosophy and ideals, when it comes down to reality they usually don't apply very well. Theories are infinitely more beautiful when they stay on paper, and if you center on ideals then you end up jaded, depressed, or detached.

The best governmental system for a large group will still be pretty crappy somehow, and which system works best is all situational. The number of rebellions and revolutions and civil wars in human history is sound proof of that.

And that brings up an interesting question (that's probably already come up in this thread lol.gif ): Does America have any right to "spread democracy" to countries that may be better served by something different?

I would fervently disagree. The concepts of “government” and “anarchy” are somewhat mutually exclusive.

Anarchy relates to disorder.

Government relates to organisation.

Please explain to me how disorder is the “natural” state of organisation.

Anarchy is perfectly suited to this topic some may not understand it, but you do not understand what the first person ,that mentioned it in this topic, meant. Yes anarchy would be the perfect government (or lack of) but people are not responsible/perfect enough to make it work. On paper an anarchy would be the perfect system (or lack of) because people would get along with each other and resolve their disputes with no need for laws. This is not possible since no one is perfect, but I think this is the point about anarchy that was intended.

Communism is another idea that works well on paper, but realy the world has never seen a true communist society. China and the Soviet Union were/are totalitarian governments of some kind, this goes against what communism is at it's heart (read the communist manifesto for more on this).

For my money, the best form of government is a Representative Democracy with aspects of direct democracy (like the propositions that californians directly vote for) and aspects of socialism. A true direct democracy will break down beyond a small scale, but you can still impliment aspects of direct democracy into government. There also need to be some socialistic aspects, we need public schools to educate our population, we need many public services. Since we are not perfect (as we have seen mentioned in every other post so far) we have to regulate buisness, other wise being the imperfect people we are, we will cheat, exploit children in poor countrys, and all the other things we know companys do when no one is looking. On the other hand, we can not regulate buisness to death, we have to allow people to start an enterprise if they want to, we have to let people have some control over buisness and the economy.

In summery, the perfect government is only an ideal and cannot be attained. The best working government is a great ballancing act that teaters on a blades edge.

Best type of government : One unlike most these days. tounge.gif

The best type of government would have those with the best resources, knowledge and experiance in control, but still allow everyone to have their opinion provided that they know that it is just that, their opinion. I don't beleive that every opinion should be able to have a huge fuss made about it, especially if that opinion belongs to a small group.

No sh*t eh sad.gif

I think its fair to say the planet Earth is pretty much doomed and any form of government isnt going to help anything, we're far to evolved and lets face it... how many of you would truely give up your computer, car, internet connection, fridge, tv..., electric? So yeah I guess we can rest this case, its safe to say any form of government cannot actually achieve what would be deemed as a perfect world.

Blimey that was a lot to read...

Anyone who's read Animal Farm will know that communism can rarely work, and that there's really no ideal government.

If you look at the Roman Empire, it had several different governments:

Originally there was an autocracy but the kings were eventually kicked out to be replaced by consuls, of which there were always two, and who were elected democratically.

This worked well until Julius Caesar invaded and became dictator-for-life. After Caesar's death, the best years of Rome were during the seemingly-autocratic years of the emperors, when the empire reached its greatest extent.

The British Empire used to be huge, and that was run by an autocratic government.

In conclusion, any type of government can work, but only if there is a good leader.

Anyone who has read Animal Farm realizes that the Pigs are oppressive and become what they once hated. The book was written in the 1950s, I'm sure if George Orwell would of written it in 2000 the story would have been much different considering the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.

The British Empire used to be huge, and that was run by an autocratic government.

Not in the 18th century. At that point in time the Kings and Queens were figureheads. The British government at that point in time was a constitutional monarchy.

You're right, any type of government can work with the right leader but in most cases the wrong leader reflects the type of government much more though and its resiliency to its leader. Countries like the Soviet Union lasted so long because certain methods they used to uncover uprisings...and exterminating anyone who even spoke of one.

Red Hat Girl

When I read Animal Farm, when I was, like twelve and knew nothing about Russia except that everyone wore gray, waited three hours for a loaf of bread and that it shouldn't ever be spoken of (this was in the 80s). But I thought the point of the book was that now that the pigs had become exactly like the humans there would be another revolution, possible led by the Benjamin or even a newer generation of pigs that might revolt, and that there had to be more work on what would most simply be called the mental/manual division, that even though they took steps to involve the sheep and ducks or whatever, there needed to be more of that for this kind of thing not to happen. I also was facinated with how the different animals reacted, representing people's different ideas on it. As I grew older I realized that wasn't what Orwell meant in writing the book, but I still think it was useful revealing of the world. I think it reflected a lot of what happened in Russia, but that people can learn from that and advance, as they did in China, and still need to going forward.

Also, I'm surprised Kained But Able said no one mentioned Socialism when my post was all about socialism. I think socialism is a million times better than what we have now, and achievable in our lifetimes, possibly very soon in Nepal. I just don't think it is the end of the achievment, I think its a transition. Anyway, if you are really into socialism you might try rereading my post.

Essentially a bureaucracy, like I advocated a few pages back. Only problem is people will get pissy that they don't have a 'say' in things, despite the fact that they lack sufficient knowledge to make an informed decision.

Hence, you need trust in the system, so you elect a few officials who determine general direction of policy (ie. left, right or central ideology).

Voila. smile.gif
