Need Help With Reflection Mapping

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's the deal guys. I have a 1986 Toyota Trueno Sprinter i'm working on. The model works great in-game, with basic "Primary Textures". But, whenever i add a "Reflection Map", even with a texture I KNOW works, the hole car dissapears like it's transparent, but there's definatly nuthing there. I've tried alot of different combo's like different colors, [prim] command, Textured: imagename.bmp, Textured imagename.bmp [prim],and the texture type. Plus I find it weird that whenever I apply the Reflection Map, it never appears to apply itself to the 3D model view, is that normal? I'm willing to send anyone the .z3d, and . txd file so they can give it a shot. Please let me know anything that could help, or even if you're willing to let me send thoes files to you. thanks biggrin.gif

Omg, i finnaly figured it out, after 7 months, this is my tut for it. it explains how i did it.

Tutorial:

Ok, Load the *z3d file with no reflections added. Now export it as a

*3ds. You will get a note saying that most of the files where re-named,

say ok. Now go to File/New, Save if you want. Now Import the *3ds file.

Now add the reflection texture. Now rename every file that the *3ds

file renamed, i recommend having the *z3d and the *3ds files open to

compare original model part names. Once you have all the Model Part

Names named correctly, export the file as a *dff. It took me over 7

months to figure this out. If you have ANY question please post them

here, I'll check the forum as much a possible and try my hardest to

help you.

That did not work for me. No reflections even in zmod. Of course, I have yet to find a way to apply reflections (well, it doesn't appear to apply the reflections, since there aren't any) without the texture being removed in zmod at the same time Are reflections applied the same as textures? copy material and apply map? Do it at same time as applying texture, or apply reflections first, then texture? vice versa? what boxes in zmod need to be checked/unchecked?

Anything to set in properties? Or something else? I have spent many hours here reading tutorials, but none of them have actual directions on how to do it. 'Apply this, add that does not help me, lol.

@ CygnusX1 -> i've had that problem myself and i've found a solution that works, atleast for me, when you want to add reflection to a material, you need to add primary texture map besides adding just the reflection map, i recommend using a white primary texture map so that you can change the color using color picker, but i haven't tested how this works ingame yet, or does it work at all, hope this was helpfull in any kind

::EDIT:: here's the pic, hope it'll help

/* that would work for the body, but you are incorrect; you do NOT HAVE to have a texture in the (primary texture) diffuse slot. how do you think cars in vice, get shiny glass, which only has a refmap and no primary texture?

If your not getting reflections in zmod, do this. select the offending objects, on the face level. select all the faces that you want to be shiny. get the attributes up (ctrl-a) and go to the second tab in teh attributes window, and make sure that "High Blending" and "Disable Blending" are NOT checked! they should be the 2 check oes in the upper right.

hi blending will set the reflection level super high, and disable blending, will turn the reflection maps off completely. Not only does this affect your reflections, but ive had cars that dont work ingame (they crash the game or dont appear at all) when i export the vehicle, with these boxes checked.

Sorry if thats a bit vague, i dont have zmod installed atm, and im working from memory. */

Edit: i wrote a topic on this before, but its too old for me to bump, and its locked, so i revisted the idea - http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtop...0entry2785585

In preparation for SA, which will feature even more complex materials and reflections, i brought back and pinned a topic covering the matter. post all your questions in there. my goal is for it to be the end-all topic for this, which seems to be quite troublesome for many people.

@ ashdexx -> no, I've had the exact problem I've described, that problem occured on my 2nd PC, it all worked fine on my 1st PC, but when I opened the same file on the other PC there were reflections only on the parts of the body that were asigned to the materials with some kind of primary texture, on the parts that were asigned to the materials which had only reflection map without the primary texture there wasn't any reflections untill I've added some kind of the primary texture to the material, and as I said:

I haven't tested how this works ingame yet, or does it work at all

this was maybe the possible solution for the problem in ZMod, not ingame problems!

anyways, I think it's because of the computer, not ZMod, because it worked fine on one PC but didn't on the other, so I thought that maybe CygnusX1 has the same problem that I had
