Barton Waterduck
Modding GTA SA on a PS2 my way, complete list: Hardware: Unmodded PS2 (or modded), Playstation 2 Broadband Adapter (to connect the hdd to), unofficial harddrive and a usb-to-ide adaptor. Find compatible unofficial harddrives here: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ Software: HDAdvance (retail version), cdgenps2 (free) and WinHIIP (free) Step by step guide (my way): 1. Get all you need, set ps2 hdd jumper to master, install the hdd in your ps2. 2. Format your hdd using your ps2 and hdadvance. (When you have done that, you can install a clean copy of GTA SA if you want. Nice thing to have.) 3. Disable ALL anti-virus software and anything that might access any of your hdds without your confirmation (may not even be possible with win xp, don't know). The goal here is to prevent your os from automatically messing up your ps2 hdd when you hook it up. This means you should NOT go looking for it using windows explorer or anything else. 4. Remove the ps2 hdd from your ps2. Hook your ps2 hdd up to your PC using the usb-to-ide adaptor (or put it inside the case if you know how, usually takes longer anyway) 5. Make a copy of your GTA SA DVD to your pc hdd (not the ps2 hdd) 6. Delete the gta3_1.img file. You can't mod the game without doing this. 7. Modify the game on your pc in any way you want. 8. Start cdgenps2. Copy the game from your PC HDD to cdgenps2 using drag-and-drop method (don't think there are any other way) 9. Click the IMG button. 10. Select ISO files (and only ISO files) 11. Put in a filename there and press "save" (or whatever) 12. This tool is slow so go bake a cake or something. 13. Start WinHIIP. DO NOT USE WINDOWS 98. 14. Press SELECT DRIVE. One drive should be named ps2. If not, you don't have one. WinHIIP should display what's installed on your ps2 hdd. 16. Press the "Add Image(s)" button. Browse to the file you created with cdgenps2. 17. Select DVD, uncheck the compatibility modes buttons, change the name if you want, ok, select file, start. 18. The game should now be transfered to the ps2 hdd. USB transfer rate should be around 21-23 MB/s. 19. When done, put the ps2 hdd back into your ps2 and start hdadvance again. 20. If it worked, play the game. Edited January 13, 2005 by Barton Waterduck
ThaKilla
Thanks Barton, I think I have found a way to Replace files in the IMG file, I just need to find a way to save the ISO and fix the size. I will Edit this once I find out. Edited January 25, 2005 by ThaKilla
Craig Kostelecky
Looks nice and complete Barton. And I think it's safe to link up your mission builder again. Unless Rockstar contacted you directly (which I don't think they did) there's probably nothing to worry about.
Barton Waterduck
Looks nice and complete Barton. And I think it's safe to link up your mission builder again. Unless Rockstar contacted you directly (which I don't think they did) there's probably nothing to worry about. I'm taking it easy with the builder though. It needs more work. Need to redo the "open file" dialog. And it looks like I'll have to find most of the opcode descriptions myself this time. Dunno if those "opcode finders" are on IRC again or something. If they are, I'm not going there, so...
Craig Kostelecky
I think I've found about as many opcodes as I can without being able to mod it myself. Once it's out for the PC, I'm sure I'll look again. I've got a feeling I'll still be a MB user by then.

K^2
I have one of these slim PS2s, so there is no way for me to put an internal HDD into it. Is there any way to get this workign with an external USB HDD? Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns. Sektor
No software has been released that will run commercial games from a USB connected HD. You'll need a fat PS2 for now.
K^2
Does the slim PS2 have all of the HDD controller circuitry removed? I have a few extra IDE cables that I can solder to the motherboard, if there are no connectors, as long as all of the required controllers are still there. I should probably just take appart this thing and take a look. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns. They probably removed the entire "expansion hardware" (expansion port) in the process. If they redid it, like added a different type of expansion port, maby it's still compatible with the old one so maby you could solder the old broadband adapter to that and connect the hdd to the broadband adapter. Probably won't be that easy though. They probably scrapped the expansion port. Just guessing though.
K^2
I guess that leaves me with no choice but to open it up and take a look for myself. I wanted to do that for a while anyways, but the screw driver that I have nearby doesn't fit the screws very well, and I didn't feel like looking for the right tool just to look at the circuit boards inside. Now there is a good reason to do that. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.
Sektor
Here's a picture of the slim PS2 board. You might not want to void your PS2 warranty just yet. It's a hassle having to write the entire San Andreas image to the HD everytime I change one small file. A tool to patch the partition over the network would really save some time. K^2
Gah, scarry. Ok, counter plan. No hardware mods. Just one big scarry software mod. How many lines of patch code can CodeBreaker handle? Does anyone know? Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

How many lines of patch code can CodeBreaker handle? Does anyone know? This is probably not the best forum for things like that. What would be faster than a PC dwd writer supporting patching dwds ? I assume you have a modchip. You can't do much with a v12 without a modchip.
tminus
Thanks for releasing your multi mod! Really excited about spawning any car and using it as an RC car! Btw, Can you travel 'GTA1 style' under vehicles in RC mode? I'm going to try it via independence exploit but I don't have a dvd burner so it may take a while. Barton Waterduck
No HDD method should be something along these lines: 5. Make a copy of your GTA SA DVD to your pc hdd. 6. Delete the gta3_1.img file. You can't mod the game without doing this. 7. Modify the game on your pc in any way you want. 8. Start cdgenps2.
