No one ever said spending $150 million a year would guarantee you a championship. But they have a huge advantage over any of the smaller market teams. Look at the teams that have been spending money over the last 10 years, each individual year. The only team that has still sucked when spending money pretty much are the Mets. All other teams show signs of improvement in years when they increase their payroll. Cubs have been one of the biggest. The spent next to NOTHING until 2002. They only won 67 games this year, but 2003 is when it really showed its rewards. Too good off-seasons in a row, and it landed them 5 outs from the World Series. The Yankees and BoSox are always good, they always spend money. And you can go down the list.

lmfao. I can't believe they named it the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Whoever wrote that naming stipulation on the contract deserves a boot in the nuts.

@topic - I was so optimistic when I saw "BREAKING NEWS: Players and League agree to stricter steroid testing." I was like "omg yay no more stupid assholes". And then I watched the news conference and was like "What the f*ck?"

It would be a lot better if the first offense was 30 days, and then 15 day increments from that. It would give a LOT more incentive to stay clean, seeing as how you'd lose a tremendous chunk of your season just for being caught ONCE.

Definitely.

[email protected], I didn't get to see the news conference or read anything from it yet, but when I heard 10 days on the news, I was like, "the f*ck?" But, they did implement random drug testing during the off-season, which is a plus in my opinion.

I would say 20 games for first offense, 40 for second offense, and third offense and up is suspension for the rest of the season and any postseason your team may be involved in.

well I think that The mets will do good this year. They will be a .500 team but they wont make it to the playoffs.

The Braves will win the NL East

The Brewers will win the NL central. ( nah, I dont know too much about the central confused.gif )

The Giants will win the NL West! cool.gif

Didn't the Brewers lose their best relief pitcher of all-time?

Kolb!? or something like that?

I think the Giants will do good this year. Barry Bonds, Moises Alou, Jason Schmidt, and young pitchers will get them into the playoffs. wink.gif

On the Floyd/Sosa talks....the only good I see there is salary room.

Im not gonna be happy unless the Cubs pick up Mags. If they dont Im gonna be a White Sox fan this year and Cubs second.

Brewers are garbage. Period. I go to like 20 games a year...every time I do....its to see the other team.

Moises Alou is overrated. Even if he his 38 homeruns last season, he could not do much during the last part of the season. Only reason is BA was respectable was because of his first couple months. This season, he will be injured, or in slumps. Don't expect much.

Bonds also will be off the steroids, most likely, he won't be doing as well either.

Ill never be a white sox fan first. EVER.

Yep, Kolb is now on the Braves biggrin.gif

I also agree, the Giants may have superstars of the past but that's what they are - superstars of the past. I think maybe 5 years ago with this roster the Giants would be a great team but right now these players are going downhill along with the rest of the Giants.

Is it just me, or do none of the teams in the NL West look very impressive at this point in the offseason? The Dodgers and Dbacks made a lot of moves but for the most part still lost more talent than they gained (of course the only talent the Dbacks had was Randy Johnson), the Giants are old, and the Padres have needs on offense that should be addressed.

@NLWest talk, all valid points. I think the Padres will be the top team in the division this year though. A lot of young talent that is in the middle of developing. This might be the breakout year for them. Dodgers and Giants are a flip for 2nd and 3rd, and Rockies and DBacks are a flip for the last two spots. Those are hard calls. But, it will be a very close division, as no team stands out. And thats what makes baseball fun.

*----er cars*

Well, the Cubs made another weird off-season move, signing reliever Scott Williamson. the guy is good, but he just got off of elbow surgery, and will most likely not play in 2005. The doctor isn't even sure he will ever be the same...So why are we paying 300,000 for the guy this year, and 2 million in 2006. We COULD be using that money for like, a closer, and a left/right fielder. sad.gif

Looks like Clemens has decided he's coming back. I really didn't think he would, and I thought that $22 million was just some bullsh*t number he requested to stall for time before he made his decision (22 is his jersey number, and he's returning for his 22nd season). Needless to say his return would be a great help to the Astros rotation who are minus Wade Miller now, but $18 million is a lot of money. Plus there's no way in hell he can pitch as well as or better than last season, but I guess he deserves it since he only got like $6 million last year.

Looks like Corky is about to be shipped off to Baltimore. Just yesterday there was an article on Yahoo sports talking about how the O-birds were having a crappy offseason because they couldn't reel in any free agents. So unless the deal falls through sometime between now and whenever it looks like their offseason just got even worse tounge.gif

Personally it hurts to see Sosa go. Ive known em as a Cub my whole life and Ive watched him play for years. You think of the Cubs you think of Sosa. I wish him nothing but the best. I wouldnt mind him having another huge year just to shove it in all of our faces. He is easily in the top 5 power hitters of all time.

The Cubs want to contend though. Having Sosa as dead weight does nothing. What I think it comes down to is...be a contending team...or hold Sosa just cuz. Im happy with the trade as long as they go after Mags. Theyve opened up quite a bit of room now with Clement, Sosa, and Alou gone. Thats a huge chunk of salary. If they expect to get by, by signing someone like Burnitz....Ill be major pissed.

Mags or Bust.

Burnitz isn't much of an upgrade over Sosa in terms of production, since he strikes out a lot and his numbers were inflated from playing at Coors. And I'm sure it's a bit of a risky proposition to go after Maggs with his injuries and Boras as his agent, but I guess why not.

Don't the Cubs have Hollandsworth to fill one of their outfield spots, or is he one of those career bench players? I remember he did pretty well starting in place of Sosa last year. So if that were the case this coming season, then all you'd need would be another corner OFer and you'd be set.

Burnitz blows. He always has. Playing in Coors or Miller....he always chonged. Ill keep Sosa thnx. Go after Maggs. In my eyes, Magglio is the best all around hitter in the leauge. Im not talking about numbers and stats, just seeing what this guy is capable of doing....is just amazing. Ive seen him hit a ball out of the park that was gonna hit him in the knee. Stepped out, and golf swung. Peace-Out.

Hollandsworth was straight last year. The whole bench for the Cubs was awesome. Hollandsworth was doing really well...then he fouled a ball off his shin......and was out.....for the rest.....of the year...... dozingoff.gif

Why didn't the Cubs try and get something a little better in return for Sosa? I mean, he's been a powerhouse for a while and he had like one bad year. It seems like the Cubs got pure sh*t for an all-star...

You took the words straight out of my mouth! The Orioles must be thinking to themselves, "we just got Sosa at a cheap price". He's going to have a better season than last year. But I think the deal worked out well for both teams because the O's always wanted a good Right Feilder and the Cubs always wanted to get rid of his salary.

I guess the Cubs figured he was a horrible clubhouse presence and a declining star, and one of those guys that plays only for himself. Remember he left the season finale in the 2nd inning or something like that, and I remember hearing on the radio a few days after the season ended about how he planned to play for x number of years, hitting home runs at a certain rate so he could reach 700 and retire. Goes against the whole "there's no 'I' in 'team'" mentality, even though we all know that saying is a bunch of bullsh*t for most professional athletes.

Its simple. He's been their number 4 guy for the past 10 years or w/e and in the past couple years he hasnt been performing to his capabilities or to his moneys worth. He's promoted alot of negative energy in the club house and no team wants that. They get rid of his salary and now they can really do business with Ordonez.

Looks like yall wound up with Burnitz anyway. Not a whole lot of people are willing to deal with Maggs represented by Scott Boras.

I can't wait for the Mets to realize that Beltran's 7-year $119 million contract is more of a curse than a blessing.

Maybe the Cubs can still sign Mags. Burnitz took a 1 year 5 million dollar deal. So I guess they still could. They still need another outfielder.....so they might.....I mean they could.....awww who am I kidding??

Go White Sox!

The talented portion of the free agent market has been sucked dry. According to scout.com, Ordonez is about to sign a 5 year, $75 million deal with the Tigers. Detroit better hope he stays healthy, because if he doesn't then there's another reason to think of Scott Boras as the devil himself.

Did anyone hear about Jose Conceco saying that he injected Mark McGwire with steroids before a game?

If this is true then wtf is baseball turning into.
