starsmore
The servers have been hosed all day. Hopefully it'll clear up this weekend, so I'll have something to do, since I'm stuck working on Christmas. Of course, I plan on bringing my PS1 to work anyway. If I could figure out how to hook my PS2 to a monitor without having to buy anything, I'd finish up San Andreas this weekend. And as for posting mirrors, part of the blurb on that page says it's action verboten. I don't think the mods would want you doing it.

Thorpe
You can't click on the GTA 2 logo image like the others and when I submit the form it takes around 10 minutes and then says this page cannot be displayed. So annoyed. Gonna contact them whether they will sort this out but then again they did say it's on a first come, first serve basis.

sninkychan
If you use firefox.. it takes 5 seconds until you get that error I've noticed that when Firefox tells me "Connecting to 63.236.94.185" and nothing else, it times out after about 10 seconds. However, about once every 20-50 times, it immediately changes to "Waiting for 63.236.94.185", which tells me that my first several tries were blocked at the network level, but that this new "Waiting..." try actually sent my form information successfully to the Rockstar webserver and is waiting for a reply. The reply to that takes about 5 minutes (haven't timed it) and up to now it's always been "The document contains no data." which is the truest sign of a web form timing out on the server side I've ever seen. But I think that the "Connecting..." message is doomed to failure... they must be blocking most connections on the network/proxy level. So when the "Connecting..." message isn't immediately replaced by "Waiting..." I hit Escape (Stop) and resubmit over and over till I get "Waiting..." Anyway, I wrote them an email on the 22nd suggesting that they publish the file to the mailing list via BitTorrent (all they have to do is put the same restrictions for redistribution on the .torrent file) and that would significantly free up their download servers. They haven't responded. They're cool, but I guess they're not that cool.
sninkychan
They just commented out the form reference in the HTML page: the current form submit action: action="message.php" commented out: action="http://63.236.94.185/classics/submitform.php" Now you immediately get a message saying "Thank you FIRSTNAME, for your interest in the Rockstar Classics Free Download Series. "Unfortunately, we are experiencing a high volume of downloads now and your information has not be [sic] collected. Please try back another time." Perhaps the commented-out page doesn't come up every time, but I imagine it does. So they're just plain not accepting any more form submissions for the time being. Pseudocool
If you want to play some GTA2 so badly, you can probably pick it up at a gamestore near you for as much as $5,- I did this just a couple of days ago.

Yeah, but that'd require me to actually go to the gamestore Anyway all the places near me dont keep games that old in there, so it'd prolly be better off just waiting i suppose. Although it is beyond me why there isnt any torrents on it...

Also, my gamestore is just 5 minutes walking from my residence.

I thought Rockstar said this version of GTA was modified and optimized to work with modern fast computers. The GTA2 Manager that you run before GTA2 seems to be a part of this mod, not that I have anything to compare it to. Does the store version have the GTA2 Manager? With the frame rate limiter? So if it is made to work better post-Moore's-Law, I'd say free-and-optimized is better than $5-and-too-fast.

Sektor
What's the version number of this free version? Check properties of the file GTA2.exe or just look on the main menu screen. GTA2 Manager.exe has always been included with GTA2.
