Azkoyen
After about 2 months solid work, I've finally finished the Java San Andreas Map Viewer (Sam for short). Please check it out here and post any comments/criticisms you might have on it. What does it do? It gives you a zoomable SA map that will show any of the following in game items: Vehicles Weapons Arnour Health Police Bribe Gift Tag Photo Opportunity Horseshoe Oyster Unique Jump Two Player Games Tools The coordinates for all these items are pulled straight from the game files (Thanks to the modding community) which means the positioning is exact. At least, it's exact as we could get it. Because we had to convert the points from game points into map image relative points, there's some small discrepancies with some of the points. Still though, if you use my map to find something, the slight difference in position isn't going to stop you. Instead of being right outside the front door, it'll be a foot to the left or right. Features Filter: Allows you to search the map for a particular item, like 'Raindance,' or 'Flowers,'. Mark Point: This lets you mark a position on the map so you can show a friend something (using the 'External Link' button) Enter ID: Use this button to mark a particular object on the map. External Link: This creates a URL that will generate the exact same view as is currently on screen, allowing you to link someone straight to the map, and straight to the view you want them to see. IB Image Link: This is much the same as above, except it generates IB Code for an image link. The image is generated by Sam's php buddy. Here's an example: , Ok, that's it. Hopefully the damn thing will work. I can only assume it won't
andibomb
Amazing Work as always Az. I love the Filter feature, makes things so much easier. I'll take a closer look later, but for now, to school.
Johnno
Wow, that is great. Nothing more to say. Nothing more needs to be said .
Dalpura
Very sweet Az. I've had quite a look around it, and it's indeed very amazing. Great work. Now if I can just get San An so I'll have a use for it, we'll be set. GTANet's San An site is coming along very nicely. Some great features being added, this by far the best. Thanks for sharing it here, I don't check the site much.

Rotten
truelly stunning work as usual az, i love the external image option especially. i was wondering though, as i know nothing of java, how easily it is to add extra data to the map? does it use a database like sql? or is it in a document? *me shoots self* putting questions aside, big round of applause to yourself, az, for this.. simply jaw dropping work, and to the team that helped it. if anyone ever needs any application of any form, im sending them your way. d:
Azkoyen
Thanks Rott, thems kind words right there. As for the data, it's all in a text file. The applet simply downloads the file, parses through it, and creates it's item objects from the data. Whenever the map is repained, only the items within the current bounding box are displayed. I thought this was gonna make it sh*t slow, seeing as there's over 1000 points on it, but it doesn't seem to affect it at all. Which is nice. There is one sad problem with it though. It doesn't seem to work over a proxy. Can anyone confirm or deny this actually?
PatrickW
Az, gratz on the release.. The icons are looking great How is SAM reachable from the home-page of gtasanan.com ? I can't seem to find any reference to it in the menu's and stuff.
Azkoyen
Yeah, that bit isn't quite ready yet Digi's away somewhere, and I can't really mess with the homepage without his consent. So, someday soon hopefully... And thank Tagamaynila for the icons, he made them not me

Doody the Clown
You're an amazing asset to the network. I can see millions of people flocking to that site within the next month, better be prepared for the bandwidth. A lot better than the beta version, I must say. Love the icons. Edit: Put up some sort of "mark" feature for the tags/oysters/photo ops. Possibly use cookies to keep the stats so people don't get pissed if they accidentally get a browser crash or something. That'd make this awesomely awesome tool complete.
Azkoyen
Can you explain a bit more Doody? Do you want to turn it into a kind of tick sheet? I'd thought about that, but using cookies to store that info would be way too cumbersome on the server and on the client. I'd have to store tics for over 250 items, and then there's the woes of modifying the cookie with java. I'm sure it isn't that hard, but even still. AnalogRival
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I have to ask. Is there any way this could be a standalone, so as not to require internet access?

Azkoyen
It's designed that way so it can't be 'stolen'. I honestly wouldn't mind if people used it in their own homes, but what I want to protect against is people offering it on their own website. It's for GTANet and GTANet only. Sorry guys... Mushroom_Man
I hate to be pedantic, but you're missing the cropduster on top of the hill in teh country side (south of the panopticon)
CrazyDude
A Mazing. Truley. I have one suggestion though. Maybe have a 'help' pop-up kinda thing with the terms that can be used in the filter? I know it's obvious to enter in the filter the item you want to find, but I'm terrible at spelling and some times ahve a hard time gettin gthe results I'm look for. Or maybe that 'help' pop-up could be a list of specific item searchs? did that make sense?
Azkoyen
kmg90: Mushroom_Man: You ARE pedantic, but that's ok, so are millions of others. The list of vehicles thats in the map at the moment is only a list of vehicles that become open during the progress of the game. The guys recently found the master list (I think) and I'll be adding it sometime soon. Whenever I get a moment really. Then, hopefully, the cropduster and all the other vehicles will be available for all to see. Pilate: That's a fantastic idea. Whether your spelling is good or bad, you'll still need hints to figure your way around the highly convoluted way I've tagged all the points. In the next version there'll be a lot more information. Like places to eat/drink/go on dates, girlfriend meeting points/homes, Race Locations, and hopefully even Residential Homes! (For the Burglary mission). Dunno about that last one, a bit more investigation needs to be done before that gets finished I think. So yeah Pilate, this is a great idea and I'll put it together for the next release (sometime today hopfully) Az.
Mushroom_Man
Whoa, that's all the ones that you have to unlock?! That's an incredible amount... Don't take my pedantisism too seriously, this is the best San Andreas map currently in existence and, i believe, that will ever be made. Great job, you guys (unless you did this all by yourself, in which case it's even better) are an amazing asset to the community Edited December 7, 2004 by Mushroom_Man

The most important part (the point data) was contributed by the fantastic modding team here, and so was the map that's used. Without them, what would my applet be? T'would be now't but an empty shell. So, thanks steve-m, PatrickW, CyQ, Smithers2, and of course tagamaynila for his uber-leet graphics work And thank you for your comments dude, they're what make it all worth it (for me anyways)
Azkoyen
I put a cool little 'zoom window' thing into the map. Have a look and lemme know what you think. And more importantly, if there's a problem with it.
adamcs
I put a cool little 'zoom window' thing into the map. Have a look and lemme know what you think. And more importantly, if there's a problem with it. Is that where you click and drag the area that you'd like to zoom in on? If so, that's pretty damn cool. Now remove the RHS!
