Played San Andreas for about 3-4 hours tonight. (lost track of time. tounge.gif ) Anyway, the game ran fine with no freezes at all. The lag wasn't too bad at all tonight, either.

I'm not sure which one I've got. I bought it when GTAIII was released. I haven't had any problems with it reading GTA:SA. I have seen some wierd 'anamolies' though. At the beginning of 'just business' when Smoke walks into the Atrium, he shrank then my PS2 froze. I had to reset it then and lost about two hours worth of work.

I also remember it freezing during GTA:VC. Usually when I was flying one of the helicopters. I remember it happening two or three times. Nothing to lose my mind over though....

I am gonna' be irk'd if it fails to read GTA:SA altogether like some others have seen.

Hi, new to this forum, ended up here because I'm having problems with the new GTA.

Its been acting weird since day one, driving around and getting the disc error screen, driving into an area and ending up with textures that look like an N64 or somthing! No speech in cut scences. So, I got a disc cleaner, because I didn't want to open up my PS2. Now the most common thing is that after about 1hr of play the game freezes and I have to reset. One thing that I get, that I havn't seen mentioned anywhere else, is the occansional message saying "loading" like when Im driving around I get a litte box pop up on the screen over the top of the graphics. Has anyone else seen this?

My PS2 is old, i think its 30003. I can play all other games fine, I heard blue discs cause problems, but I played Teken Tag today and it worked fine. So I'm recluctant to open up my PS2 until I'm sure that this is the problem. The only other game that has ever caused problems is GTA3! But that only happened a couple of times, and after months of playing. This problem really sucks, and I don't know what or who to blame.

Has anyone else got a PS2 that has no other problems, but this game, and has done the opening up the PS2 thing, and then the game works fine?

i have got a 39004 here in australia (not my own, it is from norway)

I got the game on monday (5 days ago) and have been playing the whole week, with no DRE, no freezing, nothing unusual. the machine was running up to 48 hours in a row. then last night I switched it off, went to bed. this morning i was playing for one hour maybe, than for the first time it frooze, the music stuck and repeated the same part all the time and then a screen appeared saying "Disc read error". I turned the thing off, turned it on again and five minutes later again DRE.

A think a 39004 is not too old. i will ask my roommate when he bought it. At home I have got the very first PAL model, I will see how that works in five month when I am back...

that really pisses me off. even when the first ps2s reach three years now, this is no age for a electronical machine. if I buy sth thats so expensive like it was I can expect that this will work for a sufficient amount of time and that is longer than five years!

news: FOUND THE REASON FOR THE CLICKING NOISES!

i opened up my ps2 and was searching for anything that may have caused a problem, then i found that the motor system which moves the lazer is at fault.

Since dual layered disks needs more precision to read, the lazer will move slower, the slower it goes, the more chance there is of it "slipping" over the cog-type system which moves it (resulting in a clicking noise). I blamed this on the oily stuff they put on it in the factory, i wiped a bit of this off and now i dont get so much of the clicky noise.

i do, however still get the disk-read errors which (i think) is the fault of the disk as it happens to so many people.

Hmmms... I found a site which said about a clicking noise and it had a very good explanation on how to fix it (with some great pics)

Am I allowed to post the link?

mad.gif Could you send me the link? Coz this is really peeing me off. I think it's a disgrace they are allowed to sell a game that f*cks up everyone's PS2!!!

I've tried 3 different copies of the game from 2 different shops and I've not been able to play for more than about 10 minutes at a time without getting game freezes, the radio stations looping the same part over and over and going off altogether, the ground disappearing and disk read errors. The disk read error screens stay on progressively longer until the game locks up altogether.

The game appears to be completely unplayable.

I've tried all 3 copies on 2 SCPH-35003 model PS2s and a brand new (slimline) SCPH-70003 model. I've never had a single problem with any of my 30+ other PS2 games (including GTA3 and VC) and lots of PS1 games. If trying it in a new 70003 PS2 doesn't help, then I don't know what more to do.

Thanks alleybaba, your other topic looks really helpful (lots of good suggestions, I'm reading through it now). When I took my other copies back I was told that they'd sold hundreds of copies, as well, and that I was the only person taking one back.

I posted in this topic first because I thought it would be around for longer since the topic has been 'stickied'.

(this is a previous post in another thread. It's the same topic, but the other thread wasn't PINNED)

I'm glad you guys are having these disc-error problems.

I say that in a good way.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one. So now we have to put our heads together and figure this out. Until RockStar or Sony tell us what to do, we have to figure it out on our own.

So let's go with what we know is happening to some of our PS2s while playing San Andreas:

- clicking noises

- game freezes

- momentary "Disc Read Error" messages

- sound problems

- graphic/texture loading mess-ups

- the actual San Andreas disc getting circular scratches on the bottom

- not all PS2s have problems with San Andreas

- every PS2 from the original to the newest slim ones do it

My PS2 with San Andreas (only) does the following:

After a flawless boot-up and load, as I leave the Johnson House the screen goes black and I can hear the PS2 making a clicking sound as it reads the disc. It is a very loud clicking sound (enough to make your eyebrows tilt). The screen freezes on black and I turn the PS2 off out of fear of that horrible sound.

I remove the disc and I notice that it has a circular scratch on the bottom when I tilt it in the light.

I have two PS2s, so I hook up the other one and play. Same thing happens.

So I take it back to Wal-Mart and exchange the game. I check the bottom of the new one .... no scratches, it's mirror-like.

I take it home and it works fine for a day or two. Then the clicking starts again, and the game freezes. I take out the game, the circular scratches are slightly back.

I put it in the other PS2. Same thing.

I went back to Walmart and they told me that they sold about 300 copies of the games, and they were not aware of any returns thus far.

SO, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The circular scratches on the bottom tell me that the disc is rubbing something as it spins. Somehow the disc is either:

1.) spinning too low (it is too heavy)

2.) it is wobbling (think of riding a skateboard downhill too fast -- if you lose your balance at all, the board wobbles uncontrollably.)

I think that is what is happening to the disc. Something is throwing it off causing it to make the clicking sound and/or not be read properly (let's call whatever it is the "snag").

I don't think it's a dirty lense. I've cleaned both of mine. Nor do I think it's the white dial they say to adjust a few notches both ways. I tried that, it didn't work.

I have found that the disc plays fine for a couple days before messing up. Perhaps the disc "rubs" over that one part until it the DVD's coating wears off and then it begins to catch on the snag.

I'm still not sure what exactly the snag is.

Also, the game boots up without a problem, and only freezes when trying to exit the Johnson House. That tells me that the laser is moving to read a certain part of the disc, causing the disc to hit the snag then. For others, it's a certain part in the game, a mission, a song, etc.

So let's think ...

Mathmatically, if only a small percent of the games are doing this, and it is occurring every version of the PS2, then logically, it has to be the PS2s, not the discs themselves. Don;t ge me wrong, the disc is the reason, but maybe not the problem. For some reason, our PS2s are reacting to a disc that requires more reading than other PS2 games.

The quicker loading times (as compared to GTA3 and Vice City) could mean that the laser has to work extra hard to keep the game running. That, in turn, could throw the disc into a wobble, causing it to do some or all of the following:

- hit the snag

- put the small scratch on the game

- causing the clicking sound

- producing the READING SAN ANDREAS DISC screen

- un-synching the audio

I'm just trying to go through this logically. Anyone, please jump in and/or correct me or make other observations or give more theories.

Last night I went to a modelling graduation thing ( biggrin.gif ) and when I go back to San An this morning, the PS2 makes all these funny noises and freezes on the load screen between interiors and such.

I take it out and there's a small scratch on it, which is funny seeing as how it left the PS2 once after I put it in last Tuesday, and that was Thursday.

My brother was playing it at the time and he says it just froze and he turned the PS2 off.

/me no happy.

Ah now that I look at the post by alleybaba, it's pretty much exactly my problem.

The most probably I've had with SA is a slight pause for a good second or two in game. I don't know why this is but its not a big deal to me. Happens occassionally and I just cleaned the disc with a product called GameDr. or something like that. So all is good.

I did, but it was actually my sh*ttyass PS2. It scratched my SA disk 3 days after I bought it. Luckily it was still on warrantee.

That's the mission mine froze on. Mine done it twice in a row, so I decided to load my game up and just make a new game save (not starting over, but just saving to a different slot) I loaded that save up, done the mission and everything went smoothly. Give that a try, man.

Mine got scratched by the PS2, so now it makes a weird noise and freezes on loading screens.

I'm taking it into this second hand shop where they clean discs today or tomorrow and once I get it back I'll tell you of the results.
