You can't just convert prices and compare them. Lots of sh*t is more expensive over here for no good reason, especially musical instruments.

Also, maybe someone can give me a recommendation. I mainly play bass, but I also enjoy playing guitar. However, all I have is an acoustic. And I want something I can have some electrified fun on, probably by just plugging it into Guitar Rig and messing around. So, I want to spend the least amount of money possible, but have a guitar that is at least playable. I can get Squires in that price range, but everyone tells me they blow huge amounts of cock. So, what's a good guitar for a hella low budget?

(As for type, something with single coils. Put it this way, if I was to buy a good guitar, I'd get a strat).

What qualifies as "hella low budget"? Squiers are crap, but a Mexican-made Fender is fairly affordable (try $350-400) and a hell of a good guitar for the price. The only things that're noticeably cheap are the pickups they use (they're a bit noisy), but if you want to change that down the road it can be easily rectified with another $150 (or less, depending on the pickups you want) and a soldering iron.

I've very satisfied with my Squier Affinity Fat Strat. In fact I even sold off my Gibson Les Paul Special because I played the Squier more. My advice is to go to a local guitar shop and play around with a Squier before purchasing one. Most good stores will have amps set up so you can play them before buying.

Mexi Fender Strats go for AU$800-900 over here. I'm buying a new bass soon, and I'll probably be spending a bit over $1000, and I class that as medium-budget. So, a Mexi Strat is a little out of my price range, considering it's only to mess around on.

I guess I'll just go and try out a few cheap guitars, and see how sh*tty they really are.

I am a cock-gobbler, and I like to gobble cock.

The neck tone pot no longer functions, and the middle controls the bridge. Oh well. I'm happy with it.

I played one of those at the store before. I thought it was alright but it was a bit of a rip-off for $1000.

Anywho. Last week I finally got my ESP. I like it a lot but now I'm in search for another amp. What would any of you reccomend? I'm trying to look for ones at least under $500.

I'd recomend the Roadking man. CLICK

@San Andreas Nut: 100% self taught, never had a lesson in my life.

You'll pick up some bad habits that way, but I believe overall you'll

develop a more innovative playing style. I've been playing for some 13

years and know the names of like 3 cords and I still can't name all the

strings... I've looked them up before but can't ever remember them.

I guess that my point is the guitar is unique compared to most things.

You can learn all you want about it, that still doesn’t guarantee your going

to be able to do it. Just go for it, and never give up, eventually you wont suck. cool.gif

Teaching yourself how to play has its benefits and its downfalls. Being able to read and play sheet music, knowing chord names, progressions, scales, modes, etc. and emulate different styles can add more to your playing and definitely makes it easier to play with others (particularly in a professional setting), but if you don't grow past emulating other people and develop your own style then your playing will never be anything special.

I started by picking up an old guitar I found in the attic and fiddling with it, looking up tabs and techniques on the internet, and getting pointers from various friends. I took lessons for a short time and learned quite a bit, but I ran out of spare cash and haven't gone back. I taught my brother his first few songs and some of the basic guitar stuff I learned myself, but he's been taking lessons regularly for a year or two now and he's quite a bit better than I am. But I suppose his lead playing is a bit more dull and boring, in my opinion.

You get better quicker with someone else training you - you just have to remember to be your own person with your own style in the end.

My, that is a nice guitar. Where did you get it?

Yes, anyway I'm looking at new basses. Have $500 or thereabouts to spend. It isn't much, but any suggestions? ($500AUD = $380USD or £200)

I'm not terribly knowledgeable about bass, but I know Fender makes quality basses and you can get into their cheapest offerings (they're made in Mexico vs. the more expensive American series, but the quality is great) for around $400-$450 US. So if you know enough about basses to figure out whether one is in decent shape, you might find a nice used Fender Jazz Bass in your price range.

I'd go with an essex (SX), they're all the rage with modders these days. They have a massive following at talkbass.com, among people who are generally whores for 5 grand boutique basses. They are made in a factory in china, the drawback is setup. The reason these quality basses are so incredibly cheap is because they mass make them and throw them in boxes to be shipped. Most need neck/action adjustment, some need some screws tightened (bridge, tuners, neck, ect), and some need a fret leveling/crowning.

They will run you anywhere from 99-140 bucks, depending on the model. Even if you need all the aforementioned work done to the bass, you can have it done professionally at any music store for under 100 bucks. After that, you're looking at a bass similar or better than the quality of a MIM (mexican) fender for less than half the price.

Here's the link to buy one

Here's the link to the 344 page discussion of them on talkbass.com

PS - What are you playing currently?

Funny you'd mention those - I've heard the same thing from a guy I know about Agile guitars (they look like Gibson knockoffs, but apparently the quality is amazing for the price) and as I understand they're only available from that Rondo Music site too.

Suprisingly enough, Ive heared the new Squire bass models are actually not that bad. The Vintage model in specific.

Us suggesting you basses will be a bit sketchy, you should try out any instrument yourself and see if it appeals to your hands, your ears and your eyes.

Squire has new models that "unofficially" take after two of the most famous basses in history. Jamersons funk machine, and jaco's bass of doom. Both look really nice, but nobody has really reviewed them yet. I suspect them to hold the same problems that SX holds, but at a much higher price point.

Yeah, kurt (owner of rondo) is a great guy. He's very forthcoming about the issues that I mentioned about his basses, he works hard to fix them in ways that keep the price down. Obviously he can't make the setup process at the factory more in depth, because that would drive the price up... He has, however, ordered all necks to "proof" for a year after being crafted so they can properly dry. This helps the fret leveling issue immensely, because when they ship from the climate in china to other parts of the world the neck can warp if it's not properly dried and put the frets up. Still, you can't expect an instrument from rondo to play fantasic out of the box.

Been looking at Jackson guitars lately, and I was wondering if anybody would recommend This guitar? I've read a few reviews, and everybody seems to love it. (I mostly want it because it looks f*cking sexy. But I don't want to buy something that looks hawt, but plays like ass.)

I was originally going to get that one. I guess if you want a Rhoads without spending $1000 thats a good deal. I'll probably end up buying that for my 3rd guitar whenever that happens.
