The thread that started it all

Anybody who installed killer.ip's "gta3lc_2d_fix_compilation.zip" is going to get all kinds of crashes that don't exist without it.

A crash problem in the Red Light District was brought to my attention a few days ago by Boombot & TheAnswer, I tracked this down to not rebuilding the gta3.img manually. I found this fixed the problem for me, as it did for those who originally posted the the report. smile.gif

I've been working on a further update since then, an additional ? files or so, wink.gif and have had no problems as long as I've manually rebuilt my gta3.img after using the GTA Mod Installer. As you know I do test all my files as thoroughly as possible, and any bug reports are taken very seriously. Let me know if you have any further problems. xmas.gif

It worked of course. How embarrassing blush.gif I even remember reading that and I still didn't do it blush.gif

@GT-1: Yes, you can install the updates with the autoinstall version. I always recommend manual install over auto. It's really easy too.

Hehe, don't scare me like that Dem. biggrin.gif Kinda strange that a bug with the Mod Installer comes after we've been using it successfully for a week or two. The workaround does, er... work though, so it seems to be okay to carry on using it.

I'll be updating my readmes with the new 'rebuild tip' info, and it's probably a good idea for anyone else intending on releasing an update that uses it to add this as well. wink.gif

/brushes aside one of the rolling tumbleweeds... biggrin.gif

Right here man, but I think the entire boards been a little slow lately anyways. bored.gif I'm on 56k for the holidays, and not only that but the line's on another machine altogether, so trying to pry off anyone else that happens to be on it is a game all unto itself.

I've been working my socks off the last fews days, so you should see another update from me pretty soon. I know Dem was saying he's got a week off, but I can't vouch for him. If he's had time off I can guarantee there'll be something to show for it too (even if it's not initially apparent, it'll be work behind the scenes kind of thing).

Okay, back into the fray, keep my seat warm. colgate.gif

good thing you did that since its a little dead right now.

btw, I have always the same damn f*ckin prob with this textures fixes!!! I install it, everything is ok, the game takes 3 time more time to load. and still INGAME ONLY SOME PART OF STAUTON IS SHOWING!!! Every building are transparents! only roads/grass/cars/props are showing! I tried everything! rebuilding the archive, changing DXT textures settings etc.

even in moomapper, the textures appears like "non existing" in white/non textured.

help?? (good thing I made a backup fo the GTA3.dir and gta3.img before)

EDIT: and look at that! 400 post in this Topicand a 21th page!! it's way more that the whole GTA:WO forums tounge.gif

yeah, the texture fixes, which remplace most of the game textures in 16 bits.

MSI GF4MX440SE-T 64MB DDR tv-out (Overclocked tounge.gif)

Forceware 52.16 2k/XP (latest)

Windows XP Pro. (no SP1)

etc.

I tried (with RivaTunner) to change the DXT settings but it doesn't work too...

EDIT: and btw, my video card supports DX DXT1/DXT3 textures compression in both D3D and OGL.

Edited by Knux

hmmm

i dont have that problem but i do agree that in moomapper the textures are white (i just saw that)

but i am certain is because of the compress textures

lets wait to see until killer.ip responds

if the solution requires to redoo the conversion i am here to help killer.ip smile.gif

Wow, after I installed all those updates I was really satified how my pc ran the game, it ran so much smother and better than before, plus all the texture fixes does make it better as well. Great job on the texture compression, I am really impressed, Plus before when I downloaded the mod the img was 340 mb, after I installed all the updates and rebuild it, it was about 179 mb. So If we release a final version of the mod, it would be some what smaller than now which is 75 mb.

Btw I put the rcbaron/skimmer/dodo project to the side for now, the thing was giving me headaches..... and nightmares suicidal.gif . Knux and I have been working on the cars for the mod, and are almost finished, since we are trying to get this mod as close as possible to gta3, I will also convert the carcols.dat , That is all for now...

Aztlan

Wow thanx Aztlan,

That is a great help for me!

Right when I was about to post saying that I hope the sudden slowdown was holiday related... BOOM! But that's a good thing.

@Blaer: Camera views is hard coded. Barton once made a mod with a top down view. He said that it was nowhere near as reliable as GTA3's hard-coded camera view. I think we could skip it. What do others think? Maybe I'll look into Barton's mod; if it's thread based, it will defininely be out since anybody could later add it themselves.

That's some intruiging trivia!

@crazydude: Mind if I give it a shot?

No, my week off came and went and was rather non-productive. Just the splashes release. Nothing big at all. The week was spent relaxing and with my inlove.gif so at least it wasn't wasted. Most of what I can do is dependent on a GXT conversion and ped translations. I'll probably sit down and do the GXTs myself with Krutchkov's help next opportunity I get.

In the meantime, Smithers2 is about to release a new download hub. We've gone over it a few times and it seems to be pretty up to date, so...

Hello

The site is now online featuring just the downloads and nothing more, the site is purely links at the moment, but if anyone doesnt have hosting, then please let me know and i can upload the file onto there.

The GTA:LC Site

Also, i now have Demarests approval biggrin.gif , please feel free to let me know your opinions.

Thanks.

@ Knux

by the way do you have the latest directx 9

the graphic drivers is now 53.03 something like that

do you have the latest drivers from your motherboard

visit Asus site

i think it has to do with those things because no one else has seen issues with that file

@crazydude: The carcols.dat is realllly easy to change. btw, next time you will be on MSN, we'll talk wink.gif

@Aztlan: Weird, I installed those driver and it was still displaying "42.16"... I'll reinstall them again then... And I'm always up to date with my drivers.

I am amazed on how good portland looks with the 2d fixes. It is near complete. I just wish I could work as fast as you. I haven't done any work since the rail fix. (my only work lol) because I am having cpu problems although my isp problem is solved now. Ontop of all that my work booked me all xmas break. I have four days off starting today but I will be at my uncles. I'll try to work more on fixes there. I am still having some trouble with moomapper though.

Demarest

Why is the main.scm so ped dependent.? Couldn't you just use placers? and then when peds become more developed use the find and replace feature? However it does depend on gxt, exe boundrys etc.

Knux & Crazydude:

When replacing cars in vc are you making sure each gta3 car physics match that of the vc car.

Example GTA3 banshee couldn't accuratley replace VC because vc does not have a boot. Unless there is away around this? I have attempted before. It would also help me if you released a list of what each car replaced because obviously vc has more cars.

/check's under his seat to make sure it's not booby trapped. Satisfied, sits down. biggrin.gif

@Knux - At the moment I'm stumped as to what the cause of the problem on your machine could be, but we do have a machine running a similar card back home... I'll be checking that out when we get back. I'm fairly sure it may be a specific problem in your case I'm afraid, as you're the only person to bring this issue up. This doesn't make it any less important however, but until we can reproduce this bug, could you make sure you have the latest drivers and other updates etc.

@Aztlan - There may be a couple of problems in manually converting the 32bit textures to 8bit textures, namely in recreating every TXD by hand without any bugs. In my experience TXD's created with a template usually work, but in certain cases it can be hit and miss. Easy enough to tell when you have a car in a garage, but when you need to find which texture is used where it's a different story. dontgetit.gif

This process would work if TXD Workshop had a 'convert to 8bit' option as well as a 'compress textures' option. I wouldn't want to press Delfi on this as I have no technical ability in this area, but if the option were to come up we could certainly use that.

Moo Mapper is a little strange when it comes to displaying textures:

This is just a reference pic with no textures:

user posted image

This is the same scene but with a gta3.img containing 32bit textures:

user posted image

Same scene again butwith a gta3.img containing DXT textures. Note that the colours were displayed incorrectly in the last pic, here they are true:

user posted image

Last pic is the same scene, but taken from a clean GTA3 installation. Original game with all the original files using the GTA3 check box, and in this case every texture is displayed white:

user posted image

There is another cause here I believe, not one I'm sure of, but I've noticed that some models have textures that stretch over several TXD's, and it's these that display incorrectly. But remember, this is just an observation of mine.

@Mark - Hey there man, thanks. smile.gif If you need any help with Moo Mapper just let me know, and now that we know how to get around the opaque vegetation problem, I reckon you're ready to battle those trees again. ph34r.gif

@Smithers2 - Well laid out webpage there man, looking damn fine, and nice that you've got Dem's support on it too. wink.gif

Right, I'll try and make myself as available as possible to comments and ideas. Good to see things are mostly working them out, and Knux... I promise I'll try and get down to the bottom of this as soon as possible. confused.gif

@killer.ip

look what happens for me in Moomapper:

The original (32bits) -> yes, colors are messed up

user posted image

With the texture fix (all white textures are transparent ingame)

user posted image

And with a clean install of GTA3:

user posted image

Also, when I try to open the txds, I get error in most of the editor and others doesn't open it. I shall try to redo all the Txd with your textures and see.

EDIT: also, everything in a clean install of Vice City show perfectly with good colors.

Edited by Knux

@Demarest sure go ahead, I dont mind.

@Knux here is what I did and it worked for me: I got a fresh install of Gta LC, made sure everything is read-only unchecked, unzipped the texture fixes in a folder, opened gta mod installer 4.1, pointed it to the folder with the textures and then to my gta lc directory and then I let it do its job by the script, as soon as it was finished, I opened up the gta3.img and hit rebuild archieve, then tried it ingame and it works perfectly. After I tested it ingame I applied the 2d fixes the same way. Try this method out if you havent already smile.gif

I did exaclty the same thing. same prob. And look, for me , all GOOD textures from the games (VC and GTA3 original) are showing perfectly for me in moomapper but not for killer.ip. So it's not me that have a prob, it the textures, since I use th original files, everything that is supposed to show correctly in moomapper are showing. Anyway, And btw, I don't have any texture bugs except the one sided textures, that's all, so anyway , I don't need it.
