@ToyMachine: WTF?!?! God Send Death is just as bad as any Slipknot song.

I disagree. I like the song. I guess each to his own

@mikehaze: ...thanks...

Ok, I never voulantarily listen to metal, as it's just not the sort of sound that appeals to me. But I am interested to know what all this different sub-categories are, like what are the differences?

Ie. Heavy, Death, Thrash, Speed, etc.

Thanks. smile.gif

Well, I can lay out some the subgenre/genre names, but I can't really define many:

•NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Venom, etc...

•Black Metal - Mortician?, Emperor

- Pre-Black Metal - Venom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer

•Death Metal - Death, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Black Dahlia Murder

- Grindcore - Naplam Death, Pig Destroyer

- Melodic Death Metal/Gothenburg - In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility

- Gothencore - Killswitch Engage

•Progressive Metal - Opeth, Dream Theatre

•Thrash Metal - Exodus, Testament, Slayer, Anthrax etc...

- Speed Metal

- The 'Big 3' German Speed Metal Bands - Kreator, Sodom, Destruction

- Post-Thrash - The Crown

•Doom/Viking Metal - Black Sabbath

•Power Metal - Dragonforce, Manowar, Dungeon

•Industrial Metal - Fear Factory

Others:

Metalcore - As I Lay Dying... err...

Gorecore - Splattergun

lol uno you noob. Mortician is brutal dm/gore

Splattergun is grindcore

Gothencore doesn't really exist, as most metalcore bands have melodic guitar parts anyway, I'd just call them metalcore or melodic metalcore.

Good metalcore bands: Darkest Hour, 7 Angels 7 Plagues, Rifles at Recess

And how can you group doom and viking metal together? Wtf?

Viking/Folk metal: Finntroll, Ensiferum, Enslaved

Black Metal: Immortal, Emperor, Mayhem, Tsjuder, Ulver, Burzum, Dragonlord, Naglfar

I could've sworn Mortician was Black Metal...

Splattergun is grindcore...

You so told me Splattergun is Goreore! You lie!

Dammit Moon, you ruined my fun! But you have a point. The reason I suggested KsE as Gothencore was the fact that their guitar parts are MUCH more ellaborate and melodic than most other *metalcore* bands. Or, I think so at least.

And how can you group doom and viking metal together? Wtf?

Ok, now this one, I wasn't sure if it was Doom/Viking or Doom/Folk; but obviously the outcome was Viking/Folk! My mistake. I'm not too familiar with Viking/Folk metal, that's why I messed up on that one. smile.gif

EDIT: At least I got Power Metal right. tounge.gif

Jesus, why the f*ck would you think that. There is nothing remotely black about Mortician. To me it's clearly death/grind.

Viking/Folk metal: Finntroll, Ensiferum, Enslaved

I've been trying to get into Finntroll (trollish metal tounge.gif ) but I finally deturmined that they suck so I chucked it.

Immortal is Viking? Seems like Black to me. You want a great example of Viking? Here it is: Einherjer

•NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Venom, etc...

I know you're not the only one who thinks that, but really, Iron Maiden? Judas Priest? Venom?... NEW?!?! wtf? If they are new then who is old?

•Progressive Metal - Opeth, Dream Theatre

Opeth and Dream Theatre can't possibly be in the same catagory.

•Doom/Viking Metal - Black Sabbath

That's a classic, Black Sabboth is Viking, lol. Sry, I know you corrected yourself but I gotta say it: I suppose they're also NWOBHM tounge.gif

•Industrial Metal - Fear Factory

Depends of which album you're talking about. "Soul Of A New Machine" is pure death. What's with these great metal bands turning into cheesy house music. Atrocity, ...And Oceans...

Metalcore - As I Lay Dying... err...

I don't agree. To me there is no core in that music. It's pure metal, but I'm probably in the minority on this one. To me metalcore is more personified by S.O.D., Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags, D.R.I., Henry Rollins...

sing all the Souza/ Baloff material and bring their

own style to the table.Must be able to incorporate

different elements into the mix( death metal, thrash

must be clean of any hard drugs.

please send a cd / with picture of yourself and any

Haha yeah. You guys here about this? Steve Souza was becoming very power-hungry in the group so they booted him. This was 3-4 months ago I think. I saw a quick link to it but didn't save the URL, I should have. confused.gif

That's kind of odd that Exodus would put it out in the open to ANYBODY. Usually metal bands just show up on the next tour stop with a new frontman, lol. Kinda strange, but whatever they want.

Odds are, it was a temporary from one of the other groups they were touring with, but certainly not Megadeth.

I saw exodus when they were opening for megadeth on the blackmail the universe tour and exoduses singer was different from souza he looked way different and his vocal style was more death metal than thrash.

I really don't understand why people like that band. I saw them with Anthrax and Helloween on the headbangers ball tour around 1989. Exodus was terrible. Helloween and Anthrax were great.

On a related note, I just got that album "Exodus" by Samael. It rules. I have a few other albums by them and this is my favorite so far.

Woah jcab, I think you're mistaken. The term NWBHM was coined in the early 80s when the wave of british heavy metal bands (Maiden, Priest, etc) came over and made a ruckus in the US. It was considered new compared to the heavy metal most people knew then, like Sabbath or even Led Zeppelin (if you consider them heavy metal). And who said Immortal was viking metal?

I actually didn't even see his post...

That's why when I DID read it...

[Edited For Posting Before Reading]

But anyways, it seems the NWOBHM came all through the 70s and EARLY 80s.

You had Black Sabbath which was 1970.

Then you had Judas Priest, that was in 1974.

Venom in 1979, (or 1980).

and Iron Maiden in 1980.

I know there are other bands, wasn't Raven part of that, or no? confused.gif

ok I get it. I'm seeing stuff on the web about that, but no one at my school used that acronym so that's a new one on me. Well then my revised comment is that seems weird to still consider it since it puts such extremely different bands together in the same genre, like Venom and Iron Maiden, just apperently just because they're both 80's British metal.

re: Immortal, suicidal.gif I meant Enslaved. Serious brain fart there, but now that I'm looking at some Enslaved lyrics I do see the Viking angle. It's just that all the Enslaved I have is black metal sounding. There we go again with the texture vs. philosophy thing.

May be off-topic as I simply refuse to read through 60 pages at 10:30 PM, but is anybody else going to see Iron Maiden in Paris later this year? I am, I have my tickets in my hand right now. Anyone else like Early-90's metal? I love most of it, with a teensy bit of nu-metal and some death/black metal. Are Slayer playing in Britain anytime soon?

only early 90s metal I can listen to is the florida death metal scene bands, and some of the industrial movement.

Genitorturers actually torture their own genital live on stage. So it's more then just a funny name, it's a way of life lol.gif

Saw a band in Australian named Machine Gun Falatio (parody of Sex Pistols). Great show. One of the girls is hot and she shows here breasts alot. Like she's got a burlesque routine she does to the theme of the muppet show.
