I'm sure he loves new metallica biggrin.gif

You know, if metallica didn't sell out then they might have begun to sound like Meshuggah. Anyone ever noticed the similarities? Starting with the vocals: the guy is like James H. on his best day (possible the day they recorded "dyer's eve"?).

I just got Meshuggah's Contradictions Collapse. Great shiitt, but it shows that they are actually human afterall.

Chaosphere on the other hand...

I havent heard alot of meshuggah but enough to know that there pretty damn good.

f*cking hell JCab, Metallica didn't sell out! YOU! YOU! YOU! YOU - of all people, should know this! mad.gif

After ...And Justice For All, Metallica steered in a much more mature direction with The Black Album aka Metallica.

Death Angel was pure speed metal with their first 2 releases, The Ultra-Violence [1987] and Frolic Through the Park [1988]. They had done the same exact thing that Metallica did, (but well... not so extreme as Metallica) with their release, Act III [1990]. Act III was still pure thrash metal, but it matured. Metallica didn't f*cking sell out. This is one of the only comments about Metallica that I despise.

Honestly JCab, I didn't think such an ignorant comment would come out of your mouth. Err... keyboard.

@Afro_Painguin: Dude, if your gonna talk about f*cking Disturbed, make a "New Rock" topic. They aren't metal, never have been metal and never WILL BE metal.

I've made no secret of my metallica disappointment in the past. Weren't you arount when we had the Bob Rock discussion? Well, if not then let me fill you in. Bob Rock, the producer of Motley Crew, approached Metallica after And Justice with the idea of making their music more accessible to the masses for the purpose of making more money. If that's not the definition of selling out then what am I missing? And their new music is quite opposite of mature IMO. I point to (possibly) the two most important songs from before and after Bob Rock: "Fade To Black" and "Enter Sandman". Don't make me start quoting lyrics now confused.gif but maybe you were talking about the music. Then at the very least you have to admit that they toned the aggressiveness way back after And Justice. "Wiskey in the Jarro" is the only recient metallica song I can tollerate, but even that one isn't a pimple on the ass of old Metallica.

BEER GOOD, METALLICA BAD!!!

Exactly man...

Contradictions Collapse is probably my favorite meshuggah release. No bullsh*t just good music.

As for listening, I've been liken the old carcass. Genital grinder/ regurgitation of giblets got me started on em after hearing a cover pig destroyer did of it.

Edit: Also I don't think everyone should be an asshole to people who bring up the nu-metal in here. I mean sure I used to be an asshole, but it's really overdoing it, so what if they used to like disturbed or "taproot" or whatever, just let em talk about what they wanna talk about.

heh, sounds like I'm starting to induce another member to the shmetallica haters club biggrin.gif if you want more reasons here's a few possibilities:

1. From the moment they took Jason in till the moment they made it to intolerable to remain, he's been nothing but a puppet to them, npi (anyone here know the wasabi story?). I don't blame Jason for the deceison to bring in Bob Rock. He never had any control over the situation. OTOH, I'm not so hot on the direction Voivod has taken since he came around, and that he can share the blame for. If you wanna here great Jason work, check out Flotsam and Jetsam, of course he wasn't on their best album No Place For Disgrace (didn't I tell yall not to get me started? wink.gif )

2. Even though Dave was a drunk and his solos sucked at the time, that was no excuse to skrew 'em the way they did. After all, he did write a substantial amount of their early material, but thank god they assed out on him or we may never have had Megadeth.

3. If you're a bit hazey on the Napster issue, here's the best source on the subject: http://www.campchaos.com/show.php?iID=232

4. (and here's the original reason I was turned against them) if you check out the bootleg collection they released Cliff 'Em All, there's a portion where James asks the audience what they think of the "posers." That was a really popular term thrown around in the 80's by people who had trouble coming to grips with the reality of the situation (like me) albeit apt. So as the audience is giving the posers their jeers, James says "yeah, we f*ckin hate them". After all these years I'd love to ask him just what in the hell he was talking about. Anyways, when I first heard "Stone Cold Crazy" coming out of my radio I knew they had changed their sound for a reason. That's right: MONEY GOOD!!! And I got no problem with capitalism, that's not the point. The point is that they alienated their old fan base.

Wassup CØNFRØNT? Glad you took that the right way. I'm lovin my new Meshuggah biggrin.gif

I hated Ill Nino before I saw them live, then I hated them more when the drummer from my band broke her ankle during the concert. I blame them and their sh*tty music.

So anywho, I've been listening to Reign In Blood constantly. I have no idea why, but, god damn, it's a great CD.

I actually like Ill Nino. They have nice touches of Spanish music like using Rumba beats and strumming and stuff. Its pretty cool stuff. The song 'With You' starts out with soft rumba strumming...it's a good song. It's not really heavy metal though.

Here are the different types of metalheads of the whole Metallica-after-the-Black Album-spectacle.

- Metalheads who think Metallica sold out becuase their music, after the Black Album just wasn't as fast, thrashy or speedy. In other words, just went down the drain.

- Metalheads who think Metallica DIDN'T sell out becuase they think their music, after the Black Album had matured. They thought it was still decent, but don't think they sold out.

- And then there are metalheads like yourself that really know what happened, and in fact, (from what you have said), they did indeed, sell. Out.

Do you see where I am going with this? Not everyone is misinformed on the true happenings of Metallica, but alot of people just don't know. confused.gif

I'll agree with that; just switch "after the Black Album" to "before the Black Album" wink.gif

"Stone Cold Crazy" actually came out before the Black Album. That's the song (it was a radio single) that marks the beginning of the end IMO. And what a great example of what I'm talking about. It's actually fast and it could fool someone into thinking it's heavy. But to someone who had been listening to them for years, the sound was overproduced (that's Bob Rocks style) and the attitude had gone from angry/serious to happy happy joy joy. "So What" and some of the songs on Garage Days are a bit happy too, but they were also totally hard-core. It's hard to say why, but to me "Stone Cold Crazy" and the following releases didn't have any sort of edge at all. And Justice was a bit overproduced but in some ways it's their heaviest album, so it balances well.

Here's a great interview with Jason where he talks about how Bob came in and funked with his bass sound. I know some people love the Black Album bass sound, but I was already in love with the Garage Days sound (I actually think it was revolutionary -- sick sounding like Cliff Burton and Danny Lilker), so to me the new one sucked.

http://www.metallicaworld.co.uk/Interviews...guitarworld.htm

I don't want to sound disrespectful to people who like the newer stuff. People like what they like and there's no point in judging 'em for it. It's James and Lars I got a problem with, not the fans. Afterall, there is no right and wrong when it comes to opinions and musical taste. In that respect I agree with Confront that we should probably lay off the new metal fans.

How does he or you really know what happened though? Was he or you a guitar tech guy in the studio with them and heard them speak of selling out or something? confused.gif But I agree that their old stuff was the best.

I suggest we all ignore metallica posts that contribute nothing to the conversation like the one above. Metallica has been discussed ad nauseum so people who are still confused should go clutter up so other board.

In other news, I got a must have suggestion for the death metal fans out there: Vital Remains - Dechristianize. I didn't get it right away but now it's my favorite in my current roatation. It's got Glen Benton on vocals (the vocalist from Deicide), and not to downplay any other Vital Remains or Deicide, this album is truely special. It's amazing how Glen has made his vocals more like the previous Vital Remains vocalists and in the procss he's come up with one of the most brutal I've heard to date. The whole band is on overdrive throughout the album. Simply no holds barred brutal violence on this top quality production.

Good suggestions. I'd just add Satyricon, Setherial, Rotting Christ, Goatwhore, and Agothadaimon.

Speaking of Emperor and Enslaved, do you guys have the split CD (the two bands' debut)? It's definatly a must have old black metal album.

For me it's TestAmenT, Practice What You Preach, OverKill, Horrorscope and Taking Over and Nuclear Assault, Alive Again.

EDIT:

To anyone who is it to Testament, or later Testament, is Demonic worth buying? I saw it at MediaPlay for $14.99. confused.gif

If you like the spanish-"touch", go for Sepultura, or Soulfly, if you like Nu-Metal.

Uno, i'm actually looking for a Testament album to start with, can your recommend anything?

And the "Sons of Northern Darkness" album by Immortal, is pretty much the only thing I've been listening to lately inlove.gif

Sepultura/Soulfly is heavily influenced by tribal Brazil, not Portuguese Brazil. If you know anything from those bands that sounds even remotely spanish then tell us which song you are talking about. I think I've heard it all so I really doubt it.

edit: nu-metal? How dare you call Soulfly nu-metal. Your banned from the group wink.gif

Okay.

I think you misunderstood my post. Can we agree that Soulfly is more Nu-Metal than Sepultura is? I have NEVER said(never will), that Soulfly is Nu-Metal. I said(or, that's what I ment, anyway:dozing:), that if Street Cheetah liked nu-metal he might want to start out with Soulfly, which is more like Mu-Metal, than Sepultura is.

People has to start somewhere, and it wouldn't be smart to go from Nu-Metal to thrash(in fact i started out by listening to thrash, but leave that out of this..smile.gif)..I'd say soulfly is a mix something like 70 thrash / 30 nu-metal

And the spanish thing, well, i might be wrong. so what, but don't try to tell me that there's not a connection between spanish music and whatever-Brazil..

What else do you listen to?(I supppose you listen to Soulfly/Sepultura)
