Wolf68k
@Lazlowrocks. ObjectDock http://www.objectdock.com/ @Forfit From what I see of ViciousPC, I like ibuypower.com better. More options to choose from, and when choosing a case you can see what you'll get...some of them will even change image color if you pick a different color. It also seems like more comes standard with the ibuypower.com systems. Plus they are cheaper on the base price...but then I didn't look that deeply into making each an exact match of base systems either. I don't know of any others that are in US...I didn't even known of ViciousPC until you pointed it out. @san_andreas_nut That's best to ask in it's own topic. However I think it's be more or less covered already.
GTA3Freak-2001
Found another loophole, doing a repair install of XP results in another 30 days with which I have to activate. So essentially if I do it every 30 days I can keep using Windows but I am not prepared to do that so yeah a real copy is on the list to get. Wolf68k
Well if all you need to do is activate, there should be a number you can call and you enter in the code the activation gives you in the phone and they give you a code back. MiNdLeSs
has anyone heard anything abou this switch? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16817201207 I need something to plug about 12 computers togeather. I have a linksys 5 port switch and I was planning to sell it on ebay for around $20 (piad 17, and this new one will cost around $20 so I'm hoping it to even out, although I don't mind spending some money). Also, is it easy to crimp your own ethernet cables? I see they have like 200 foot lengths at Menards for not much and I have then ends. I'd like to make some wires and It would be cheaper than ordering pre-cut ones online. Also, where could I get the tool and mabye some simple instructions so I don't mess it up? Thanks
Wolf68k
The reviews look good for it. That's about all I can tell you. As for the crimping and making your own cables, spend the money and buy a good crimping tool. My dad bought a cheap one, after about 10-15 uses it broke easily. I can also tell you this much from my first experiences making networks cable. * Expect to screw up a good bit at first. * When measuring the length you need, add on about a foot or 2 for screwing up crimping. * After shripping the outter coating, lay out the wires in order first then keep the tight together, finally lay them out flat and see that the ends line up straight. If need be cut off whatever is needed no matter how little. This will help make sure when you put into the RJ45 connector they will also get crimped correctly, plus doing this will also help to make sure they go into the RJ45 more easily. * If you can get you hands on a cable. tester to make sure it's good. This is very important if you have to make any crossover cables. If your mobo has 2 ethernet ports then usually there is software that came with the mobo so that you can use these ports as your cable tester. Forfit
I have Auto-Protection enabled on Microsoft Anti-spyware and it is in my taskbar running all the time and whatnot. Is having it there really necessary or can i take it off and just open it to do scans when i feel like it on my own time? I wanna free up some RAM usage. GTA3Freak-2001
Well if all you need to do is activate, there should be a number you can call and you enter in the code the activation gives you in the phone and they give you a code back. I've done that once for someone long ago I've emailed MS Australia and basically the case is the version of Windows the CD key refers to was from a OEM version that came with my old HP and since I've changed mobo's making it not the same system and the reason its only now become a problem is that there's a failsafe built into the version of Windows which only lets it be activated on a new system a set amount of times so yeah its off to buy a new copy. Anyway forgetting that problem I'd just like to say that MS's new features regarding security in SP2 are quite stupid, Windows apparantly thinks I had spyware when after scanning with several scanners resulted in nothing. The annoying thing though is that when it detects spyware it locks your ability to change backgrounds and gives you a lovely blue background with big text in the middle telling me of spyware problem. One of the anti-spyware programs actually picked up Windows locking the desktop background as being a spyware entry and I had to fix my desktop that way. I know they are trying to make it easier for people with not much knowledge of spyware stuff but this new system makes it more complicated. Wolf68k
@Forfit Because "Microsoft Anti-spyware" is made by M$, I don't trust it....I'd rather not go into a rant as to why. From the test results I've seen, it's only catches about 2 or 3 spyware programs that Spyware or Ad-Aware might miss at the time of the testing. Of course there is no one all perfect anti-spyware program. The last spyware round tests I saw showed PestPatrol catching the most number of spyware programs on a system infested of 40 it found 30 of them. But then of the 10 it missed Spybot caught a few and Ad-Aware caught a few others. And yet because PestPatrol wants money, I can't suggest it or any others that require any payment. @GTA3Freak-2001 Like i said before, I don't want start a rant about M$'s problems. But yeah MS is pretty screwed up when it comes to security. Remember these are the same people that shouted that XP will be the most secure OS (as they said) and yet the day it's released they had to release a patch that fixed a little screw up in that the user passwords were written to a text file (which is normal) and the passwords were in plain text within that file. Can you say 'major oops'? Not to mention the number of other security holes the left in XP that were finally patched and then there's the ones still left to be patched and yet known about within the first year of XP release. Looks like I ranted anyway, sorry about that. SP2's added features is one of the reasons I'm trying not to upgrade. The funny thing is until your post just now, I was starting to feel like saying 'screw it' and give in and get SP2 installed. But thanks to you I'm still saying 'screw SP2'. SWEETSAPRIK
Not that it matters, but doesn't Microsoft actually own Giant anyway? I used to be able to set a background, then right click the desktop select Properties > Customize desktop, click the web tab and place animated .gifs on my desktop the same way you would a webpage. For some reason now when I try to do that it either doesn't work, or the .gifs show up but the background reverts to one I'd been using previously. Also, sometimes when I right click and image and select "set as desktop background" it doesn't work, but sometimes it does. It isn't that big of a deal, but I was just wondering if anyone ever heard of this happening, and if anyone knew whether I f*cked something up, or am doing something wrong. PяopagaиdaIиc. Barbaneez
Hey guys, I'm thinking about building a computer, I've read a few guides on it and everyone I talk to keeps claiming how it's nothing but literally plugging in parts and screwing things to the case. Well, I know it's probably not all that easy, but I would be willing to try. I don't care about having a whored-out case or none of that crap, I want something that performs alright and wouldn't set my budget out of range. My budget to start with is approximately $800 (USD), maybe as time goes on I could add to it. I don't really keep up with the computer hardware industry at all. What is currently the best processor by AMD on the market for the best buy? Right now I'm using a ratty old 2600+. I would also like to figure it into budget that a gigabyte of RAM would be prefered. I'm not a PC gamer at all, but I would still like to have decent graphics. Is the Radeon 9800 still an okay buy these days? I'm also looking towards a 250GB harddrive. I know that I have left out a bunch of other computer parts, I'm hoping that maybe based on the information I've given already - maybe you might get an idea more of what I'm looking for and could possibly help me pick out the other parts, like a simple sound card for example. I want something that will be fast, upgradeable, and meet the specifications above (if possible) and that would stay in my current budget range (also if possible). Please disclude computer peripherals from the budget (like the monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, etc.). If someone (or a few people here) could help me pick out parts, and give me advice on parts I listed (all of course while trying to keep my budget as low as possible) I would really appreciate it. Man thanks in advance, Barbaneez

E.A.B.
Is it possible to uninstall my DSL modem and re install it again? If so, then how? Maybe that'll fix it. Maybe the problem has to do with the phoneline getting disconnected then connected again while I was online. Edited November 27, 2005 by E.A.B. Wolf68k
To be honest I don't know much about DSL, other than from what I've heard all-and-all it sucks. If the DSL connects via ethernet then there shouldn't be a problem there. If it's USB, there's one problem...if possible switch the connection to the ethernet. If your DSL requires a login software, like I believe SBC/Yahoo does, then reinstalling the software might help. But what you might want to look into is to getting a router, which will handle the login & password to the ISP for you. Even if you're the only one using the DSL and only 1 computer; think about that if the router can handle the login for you then as soon as you turn on the PC you'll be online...also the router is a good first defence against someone hacking in; it's not perfect but it'll help. For linux I use proftpd, but thats another story. Does anyone (I think Atomic does from like 2 years ago..) know about putting a Dell motherboard into an ATX full tower case? My friend is considering downgrading to an SFF case, and my secondary but primary computer is a Dell Dimension 4500, and I hate dealing with how ugly it is. So I was considering buying his case/PSU/mobo, and then waiting a little while for prices for a Socket 939 A64 to drop below $100 to move my computer over from the crappy P4 in it now. I recall reading that Dell tends to use MicroATX, but I wasn't sure, and I haven't had a chance to shut it down and measure. Anyone happen to know? Wolf68k
2 things just to make sure I understand correctly.... 1) When you come home and turn on the PC, it's been completely off for atleast 30mins or more. Yes? 2) Please do not tell me that the error message really doesn't read like that. Because if it does, that's just F'ing stupid. 1) Let me assume for a second that the answer is Yes. Your problem is a start up power shortage. Sound strange I know. When you start the PC more power is drawn from the PSU for a short time. This is because of HDD spin up, CD/DVD scans, floppy drive check, and ever else. But after the system is up and running when you restart the HDDs are already gotten their spin up power and are on just on their normal power draw. The rest either still do the same as the HDD, no need for a fresh start up power, they might still do a start up power scan cycle but still not as much power is drawn. Everything draws power from the PSU, some more than others. The mobo more or less has a set wattage need, after that everything varries for their wattage needs. But on a fresh power up they need just a touch more, the HDDs more so. Now you may have a 350watt PSU but most all PSU can't really deliever their advertized max wattage. Then factor in the fact that most PSU their max wattage is to all of it's 12v rails, and that per rail it's much less. One ofthe reasons I like my Antec True 430 is that it uses 3 transformers, one per 12v rail, and it's because of this it can deliever 400+watts per rail which means tons of power is there for everything I have...and things I don't yet have. vALKYR
I come home usually when the PC's has been off for about 12 hours. and no, the error message does not sound like that. It's an error message from the Forceware Drivers stating my nvidia card (XFX 6600GT) does not get enough power. When I put on some 3D game then, it sucks ass because the GPU's clock is not 500 but 300 Mhz. I have an Enlight 420W PSU. When I hit the switch-on button, a Asus Motherboard , a Intel P4 550 3,4 GHz, one Maxtor S-ATA HDD, a Floppy Drive and a TSSH DVD R/RW Drive get switched on. Hope that helps a bit. Wolf68k
You have more than that. USB, fans, lights, RAM (each stick draws power), PCI cards, and so on all draw power as well. In theory a 420watt PSU should be enough. I did find one review of that PSU that the test system had a bunch of things in it and it seemed to be ok. I can't think of much else off hand. Sorry. Wolf68k
@Taxman Does it restart randomly from the moment you first turn it on..assuming it's been off for hours before hand? Sounds like a mobo failing or PSU. That sort of thing is hard to narrow down without more details, but I don't really know what else to ask about. Could also be some other hardware part that is failing. @Mindless You're using FileZilla Server and FlashFXP client? In FileZilla Server you created an account and set a password for? Make sure that "Enable Account" is checked Under Shared Folders, select the account, select the H(ome) directory and then make sure all of the boxes are checked (Read, Write, Delete, etc). If you don't have a dir that has a bold H before it, then select one and click "Set as home dir" Speed Limits; I have both set to "Default" IP Filter; mine is blank in both areas If you want I can give what I have for the Edit->Settings aka the general server settings.
