I've got two questions about issues that have been plaguing my computer lately.

Comp Specs:

PIII 600, 128MB RAM, 10.2 GB HD, GeForce 4 Ti4200 Video Card, some generic garbage sound card

#1- Almost every time I turn my computer if I haven't used it in a few hours, at the opening dos part (black screen with the text), when it goes the process of searching and finding the Primary Master, Slave, and Secondary Master, Slave, it can never seem to detect my Primary Master (which I assume is the hard disk?) My hard disk is a Maxtor 91201something, but often, it will show up a Maxtor MILENNIUM as the master instead, which I don't have. It then goes on to detect the rest, then stop and say something like "cannot find primary hard disk, please insert disk and press enter", basically there is nothing I can do from here, as I dont have a disk to insert, so I just turn it off, then turn it back on again and it always works fine then. I always joke about my computer that can't even detect its own hard drive, but its rather annoying, is there anything I can do???

2) Often and without warning when Im on the computer, the screen will suddenly snap off and go black. I do not believe it is a problem with the monitor, as the monitor stays on the picture i get when I normally turn the computer off and leave the monitor on appears, so I am led to believe it is a problem w/ the computer, but I don't know what. It is completely random. It could be a virus, it could be an overload, I dont know, but it also is very frustrating as I lose all of whatever I was doing. (I have to restart to get things back to normal)

Please help!!!

Both problems might be a mobo issue.

The reason I say that is because I had a mobo that did the same thing to me. A few compositors were giving out due to heat and then they finally fired and I had to buy a new mobo, everthing else connected to the board (the CPU and all the cards) where fine.

If you have a shop near by that can take a look at it and sells OEM parts, tell them of the problems and ask them to see if they can test the mobo to see if it is what is wrong.

Motherboard eh? I never thought of that as a problem! I've really been wanting to upgrade lately, a new processor and new mobo (and more ram, and more memory, etc. etc.) of course, I'm poor, so I can't afford it, but I least I know where the source is now. Thx!

I"m not saying 100% that that is the problem.

I'm only making a suggestion as to what might be the problem.

I didn't have the problem of the BIOS messing up the type of harddrive I have, only the monitor cutting out when my mobo went belly up.

I am however suggesting have it checked out by a pro and that varify what is the problem.

It's not int he regestry

It's in the system.ini

If you mod this, BACK IT UP

Rename the backup, system.bku (system.bak might be taken by the backup of the system.dat). Then if you need to you can start in DOS, del the bad system.ini and copy the good ini/bku using

C:\Windows>copy system.bku system.ini

Here's a little question for you guys. I went to the computer store today. I wanted a super 7 mobo so the guy let me look through the back at the different ones they had there. I found a nice one with AGP, USB, and all those nice features. I figured, great! It even came with an AMD k6-2 400. So the guy goes to test it, it doesnt work and then it smells burnt. Then he throws it in the dead pile and I proceed to look through all their socket 7 computers for another one. Finally, the guy comes back from the front with a super 7 board, real nice one too. All tested and working. So I say okay, gimme the 400 chip and that board. He lets me take it home to test it cause the guy knows me and trusts me.

Well, when I get home, I go to test it. I set the jumpers and switches right, and it doesnt work. I keep trying, clearing the CMOS, everything. Eventually I figured I'd try abother CPU, so I grab a Pentium MMX 200. Tada it works. I try the 400 K5-2, and it still doesnt work. notify.gif

Now, my question to you is, was it A. the CPU was fried all along, and the other motherboard with the AGP slot is actually good, or B. the motherboard was bad, and it killed the CPU.

What do you guys think?

my smart-a** answer; yes

won't know ontil you try it with a differ chip maybe.

my question, confused.

A mobo has an AMD k6-2 400mhz is in one mobo (that may or may not be fried), so you yank it put it another board and nada. (here where the confused part comes in) So you stick in a P1 and it works??

I don't pretend to know everything about computer (it's just a really good act), but I didn't think there was any mobo that could support both intel and amd.

Yes, exactly.

Not these days, no. But back in the era of the Pentium chips, Intel's Pentium and AMD's K5, K6, K6-2 and maybe even K6-3 all used the Socket 7. (And to confuse the matter even more, so did IBM's chips as well as Cyrux's. tounge.gif ) Thats why Intel came out with the Slot 1 I believe, to get AMD off their backs and stop them from copying.

I guess I should have put this in my first post aswell. I'm basically wondering if it would be worth the risk to try another CPU in that board that may or may not be fried, as I would really like a board with AGP. (Also, the board that is possibly fried is an AT board, and I already have an AT-compatible case I could use it in. This known working board, I don't have a case for it.)

Well how much can a K6 chip cost these days? 10 bucks maybe? So I say go for it...

Now for my question, when making a new partition for the sole use of being a swap/page file, which file system would be the best to use and would it be better as a logical or primary partition? Also...how do I hide a partition?

@Atomic

A swap partition for what OS? Win or Linux?

For Win, I think it has to be something Win can see to start with and NTFS might be better since I believe it can pack things in tigher than FAT32 can. I don't think Win would like it all to much if the swap partition was hidden, but then I've never heard of anyone doing/trying it. Partition Magic can help hiding it.

This is one of those cases I'd like to have some cheap $40.00 type system to just to try variuos crap like that on and see what happens. The worst thing you'll have to do is start over....and ain't that want testing is all about?

@ACA

Ah ok. Now that I think about, I do remember something about that. I didn't know 1/10th of what I know now about PCs.

If that guy has a space CPU floating around over there that he doesn't give a rat's a** about and will test your theory, then I say go for it. To fry a chip or not fry a chip... that is the question. (ok yeah, I sort of stole it from Shakespear)

Oh....my bad. I would just assign the function of the mouse button to Enter and press Enter on the keyboard and the Enter on the keypad alternatingly and if done correctly can make alot of presses in a very short time. Now for my questions.

1. I have two hard drives. When I try to move stuff from one drive to another it is copied instead of actualy moved. I want it to move to the destination I tell it and be deleted from the source drive if I am changing drives in the move. Can this be done.

2. How do you edit what you see in the "right-click menu"? I thought this was part of the windows shell but that didnt go very far for me. So how would I go about editing what I see on this?

3. What are mfc71.dll, msvcp71.dll, mfc71u.dll, and msvcr71.dll and why did they appear in C:/ out of nowhere?

1. If you right-click plus drag&drop the files, the menu should come up and aask you what you want to do; Copy will be bold because it's the dedfault action, select Move then it will copy the files to the new drive or folder and then delete the originals

2. You can add more items to the Send To area, you can also delete most things from there yourself or you can remove them using TweakUI. As for things like, if you have WinZip or WinRAR installed and they have options for you to do to you files/folders. Check the program's options to see if you can turn it off that way. Or you might have to uninstall it, then reinstall and use 'custom install' and uncheck the option to add it to the right-click menu.

This should be quite simple, what program do I need for viewing .AVI movies?

Windows Media Player supports. .avi movie files, pcguy.

And I've a good feeling that Quicktime does too..

I think I may need a new version or whatever, gonna go download. Thanks.

Well, the version which comes with Windows XP (Version 9, I think..) is the one I use; and it works properly for .AVI files. Try and get the newest version, yep..

This time the .AVI file has the WMP icon, so I double click but all I can hear is the sound! no images. turn.gif

It's because you don't have a video codec for it. Kazaa Lite K++ had a kickass codec pack that would play nearly anything you could get, but since it's been shut down it's hard to find.

It's most likely either...

You need the proper codec. www.divx.com has a free codec that should work.

Right. I figured this would be the place to come to when I have a PC related question. Out of all the web I chose here. wink.gif

Basically, I'll be buying a new PC soon, and I live in the UK. Where would be the best place to buy one, for value for money? Not eBay though, I'm not a fan. I live in the UK.

Err yeah. Help appreciated. smile.gif
