Try this, do a custom install and install just a basic 'what-you-need-to-run' type of install

Turn off everything you don't need. The Runtime is, if memory servers me, the Java Runtime.

I always do custom installsm, other wise stuff gets installed that's not needed for that machine. Things like Powerbook power manager and modem, monitor & printer configurations that aren't ever going to be used, they dont' save much space by not installing them but why install it if it's not needed.

I've seen the bomb many times, the one you don't want to see, and yet I have a few times, is the sad mac when you start up. The bomb you can deal with, the sad mac you have to hope and pray it'll work it's self out.

@lawley

Does XP also tell you what the file and path name is besides just the process name (something I wish 98 did)?

Get the file name and search that.

Something tells me if Google doesn't show anything with that name, and I hope you spelled it right, then it's not a good thing.

I have windows 2000 and i did spell it right but on friday my computer totaly broke down and is unable to start-up anymore so could his be related. confused.gif oh yeah and im running windows 2000 ME

Ok well isn't 2000's task manager pretty much the same as XP's?

I've hardly ever used XP and I've never used 2000, all I know is that XP's task manager gives you a lot more info about the running programs than 98's does. Although I just remember the System Information program in the Programs->Accessories->System Tools (for 98) under Running Task it list the path name.

Anybody know if you can run PATA RAID 0 and have a SATA hard drive as the system/boot drive?

Btw, anybody want a sealed OEM WD 36GB Raptor or a sealed retail powercolor 9600 Pro 128mb? If your intrested, im me on msn we can work something out.

You want to run an OS off of a drive using RAID?

I'm not sure that's just a good idea since RAID writes faster than it reads. RAID is idea for backing up your main harddrive(s). This is why it's not a good idea to install and run games from a RAID drive.

SATA, as in serialATA? That shouldn't be a problem, better speeds than IDE...although mobos still can't get the max speeds out of drives as it is now.

No, I want to run an OS off the drive that is NOT in the RAID array, the SATA drive. I'm not actualy doing this but im selling one of my raptors to a friend of mine and he wasnt sure if he could have the OS on the Raptor and have the RAID array as a secondary storage method.

Well yeah

SATA is trying to replace IDE....and it's slowing doing so.

There are still some issues with SATA but mainly with which OS you run.

Linux destros are still trying to get SATA drives to mount but they are working on a fix, I haven't researched it lately.

Windows, with 2k and XP you should be ok with no problem. I'm not sure about 9x, ME or NT

I haven't a clue what SATAs and UNIX issues are if any.

He will be using XP. Hes not worried about the OS having the problems, hes worried about a motherboard limitation.

If the mobo is made to be able to run SATA then he should be ok.

If the SATA is running off an PCI card, then things might be different and in which case I don't think the mobo might not even see it. I could be wrong, I haven't seen or heard anything about running an OS from that type of setup.

hey i was just wondering what good memory boosters there are out there,. things to prevent system crashes, recover ram and things like that.

preferably free, or at least a demo i can exploit

It's best to get just get more memory than worry about boosting what you have with software

Check MajorGeeks, this is the memory page I've use MemTurbo (shareware) in the past, there are freeware programs listed also I however can not suggest any one of them over the others.

Try one until you find what you like.

To prevent system crashes, well the easiest (and sarcastic answer) would be to say, "Turn off your computer."

Basicly get something like Norton Utilities (atleast or the full package of Norton System Works) and run Norton Disk Doctor, Win Doctor and Speed Disk (in that order) on a regular bases. Of course scanning for spyware and viruses on a regular bases is a good idea as well.

'What is a regular bases?' you might ask, that depends on what you. Video, photo, and 3d editing I would say atleast once a week for the Norton stuff. Gaming and daily internet surfing, about every other week and do everything; Norton, spyware and virus scan.

No demo of Norton, that I know of, but well worth the money.

Before you ask what ech of those Norton tools do:

Norton Disk Doctor; much like Windows ScanDisk only 100times better

WinDoctor; much like RegCleaner (something I would run along with WinDoctor) but also scans for broken shortcuts and in most cases find the file the entry is looking for in a different place and offers it as a fix but might not be the right one that's something you'll have to check into for yourself

SpeedDisk; much like Windows DiskDefrag only 1000times better and more effective at what it does. Plus it can do the drive in a LOT less time, start SpeedDisk go grab a bite to eat or see a movie and it'll be done...compared to DiskDefrag, start it and go knock up your wife come back when the baby is born and it'll be done.

Augh, FFS.

WHAT OS ARE YOU RUNNING? WINDOWS 2000 ME IS NOT AN OS!

You either have 2000, or ME. Not 2000 ME. CHECK.

I just love it how no one read topics but the one they make half the time

Yes, there is a way to read the CPU temperature within Windows and even though I've posted the about a dozen time already I'll just have to do it again

MBProbe it's free and just sits down int he system tray. You might have to tweak the default warning settings, the first time I ran it the high temp warning would sound.

Now to the original problem, I still can't find anything about it no matter where I look. If not running it causes crashes but running it doesn't, then let it run. Your only other option would be to reformat and reinstall the OS (even though upgrading from ME would be a better idea, even an upgrade toe Win98SE would be better than that crap of ME) and if it comes back (if you reinstall with ME) then that's very strange it's undocumented but just letit go.

A suggestion (besides getting rid of ME); Start->Settings->File Options: View tab, uncheck the box marked "Hide file extensions for known file types" trust me you'll thank me later.

I cant realy want too upgrade cause i cant afford it sad.gif and i cant refomat cause i dont have the original CD cause i had the computer was custom built and my dumb dad only paid for the windows license cheaply.

so the best thing too would be leave it then? yeah

also i tried Motherboard Monitor 5 before and couldn't get it working as it was posted a few pages back smile.gif

Mprobe seems too be good but is this bad when the program is open it starts too make my comp beep pretty badly and quit a few red signals are flashing on and off....... heres a pic anyway i think my comp is badly overheating which is causing most of my games too crash.

Its yelling at you because it cant get a reading on the voltages and its seeing it as if there wasnt any current at all, hence the red dots. Your cpu is a bit warm but nothing that would cause a crash. Is that reading at idle? Play some intensive game for about 20 minutes then check your temps.

Thats what I figured...how is the air circulation in your case? Try moving all the cables out of the way, cleaning dust off all the fans. and if your 1337 clean the heatsink with some rubbing alcohol and reapply some artic silver or something. What processor are you using and are you using the stock stuff, how old is it?

also WTF is AUX1 thats showing 81 degrees?

I have no idea but mine shows 108 degrees dontgetit.gif

Well the circulation seems good and theres not much/hardly any visible dust inside the case but if i look at the back of my cpu where the fan is theres f*ck loads of dust round the fan........could a hoover be suitable for sorting that out, also sorry for being dumb but where and what is the heatsink. confused.gif

oops i nearly forgot

i have an

AMD Athlon 1800xp which is 1533 mhz

and its about 2 years old.

also WTF is AUX1 thats showing 81 degrees?

AMD XP 1.33mhz and up fail at 90°C

So set the warning for around 65-70°C just to be on the save side.

My Aux1 shows different temps and since I have no idea what it is, I turn it off from the warning. Maybe it's the video card's temp sensor...hell if I know and hell if I know how to test that theory.

I only worry about the mobo and cpu temp and the cpu fan speed

The voltage on mine is reading and set to wrn me but I don't have any problems, but for like yours the -5V reading is off so I leave the warning off also.

Hmm.. OKay.

I got Win XP and i lost my internet long time ago, so i decided to borrow a cd with tools and so on, on it was the newest nVidia driver to XP. So i installed it, and it works and everyting. But, when i rebooted my comp, and it came to windows an error accured. It said that a RUNDLL in NvWtvk file was f*cked. My comp works, but it's annoying >.<

U kno what to do??

Double check that file name

I get nothing on my 98 or XP machines or even in a Google search for "NvWtvk"

Not that it matters, maybe not anyway, which nVidia card is it?

The lastest drivers are 53.04, that is what you're using right when you say latest?

Then why dont you make a google search as wolf just mentioned.

A screenshot would help a lot smile.gif

And if you know what the dll's filename is and so on. Why dont you use

start>MSCONFIG?

And uncheck the little motherf*cker.

damn you xion, du er så dum så det er helt utroligt inlove.gif

You want help, we need to know EXACTLY which file you're having problems with

No nvq was found, let alone nvq.dll

This is about as bad as; 'my computer doesn't work. what's wrong with it?' and that's all.

Yosho the Grand

I've got two questions about issues that have been plaguing my computer lately.

Comp Specs:

PIII 600, 128MB RAM, 10.2 GB HD, GeForce 4 Ti4200 Video Card, some generic garbage sound card

#1- Almost every time I turn my computer if I haven't used it in a few hours, at the opening dos part (black screen with the text), when it goes the process of searching and finding the Primary Master, Slave, and Secondary Master, Slave, it can never seem to detect my Primary Master (which I assume is the hard disk?) My hard disk is a Maxtor 91201something, but often, it will show up a Maxtor MILENNIUM as the master instead, which I don't have. It then goes on to detect the rest, then stop and say something like "cannot find primary hard disk, please insert disk and press enter", basically there is nothing I can do from here, as I dont have a disk to insert, so I just turn it off, then turn it back on again and it always works fine then. I always joke about my computer that can't even detect its own hard drive, but its rather annoying, is there anything I can do???

2) Often and without warning when Im on the computer, the screen will suddenly snap off and go black. I do not believe it is a problem with the monitor, as the monitor stays on the picture i get when I normally turn the computer off and leave the monitor on appears, so I am led to believe it is a problem w/ the computer, but I don't know what. It is completely random. It could be a virus, it could be an overload, I dont know, but it also is very frustrating as I lose all of whatever I was doing. (I have to restart to get things back to normal)

Please help!!!
