Here's a question: I am downloading Forgotten Hope mod for battlefield 1942 and it's downloading at 44.5 KB/sec. Now, it's almost a 200MB file, so it'll take almost an hour to download. Here's the catch, I'm on comcast cable internet, which is supposed to be HIGH SPEED. How do I download faster? cuz the speed I'm getting is BS.

First I would go to dslreports.com and take their speed test and see what your speeds are from there, make sure while doing this there are no other downloads going on within your household.

Then if the speeds are still low, take their tweak test which can analys your settings and give you suggestions on how to tweak them.

For let's say everything is up to par, you're only going to be downloading as fast at the server is uploading.

Forgotten Hope should be more like 1+GB, not 200MB. 200MB sounds like a patch then the full mod.

Where are you getting it from and where are you at? Usually the further away you are from the server the slower the download can go, this is not always true but it has been known to happen.

Yes.

Wait, no.

What are you using it for? If it's just net, e-mail, old games, etc then no you don't need to upgrade. If you're trying to play new games on it (and want them to look decent while you play them) then yes, you should upgrade.

To answer your question directly though, you don't need to upgrade, but you might want to.

CantTouchThis

I'm really annoyed with my laptop, it's been giving me random error messages, crashing, and I couldn't find anything with the three antiviruses(avast!, Norton, and AVG) I used along with Spybot and Adaware.

My computer first would refuse to connect wirelessly to the DSL Modem/Router, it gave me an invalid IP address message. I couldn't connect on any other computer either. It'd say it was connected on the others, but when I went to a page, the server could not be found. When trying it on my main laptop, it gets stuck in both Local Area Connection(If I have it plugged in) and Wireless Network Connection at AQCUIRING IP ADDRESS. If I tried to renew the IP on my laptop(the only one where I could, seeing that this is the only one I have administrator priviledges on, I'd get an error saying that the Rsomethingsomething Server couldn't be found. So, the only way to get on the internet was to "connect" to Verizon through the ethernet cord.

It was wierd, if I went to Network Connections, three things would show up, Wireless Network Connection, 1394 Connection, Local Area Connection, and Verizon Online. If I clicked Verizon Online and entered my Verizon username and password, I was somehow connected to the internet. At one point, I let someone attempt to fix the problem by screwing around with my registry which was "filled with random sh*t".

After he tried that, I restarted, logged in Windows, but got stuck at the blue screen, right after logging in and right before you see your wallpaper and everything loads. Occasionally I'd get the "Loading your _______" window to pop up and my wallpaper would be shown, but it'd get stuck right there. Instead of being hot and heavy as this laptop is, it'd cool off and feel as if it was off. I restored teh registry using a copy he exported before he played with it, then I was able to log in and actually use the computer. I used a registry cleaner and cleaned the things I knew shouldn't be there, some of them mentioning URLs such as www.sfweferg.com/fwegfergeg/afdsadad.html or a different varriation ending in .php. After doing the check and deleting things. I attempt to log in and I get the blue screen, I restart but this time I get a blue screen with an error message on it, before I'm able to log in, and now it happens everytime I try to reboot:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controller. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007b (0xf7b70528, 0xc00000034, 0x00000000,

0x00000000)

Does anyone know if I can fix this/how? smile.gif

[EDIT] Sorry for typing so damn much. :-/

Say, what's the correct way of installing nforce drivers? Should I just install them? Should I delete them first?

Because SanAn just came out It kind of took me off guard, similar to a thrown brick hitting a head would. I realized that my computer, once the unholy lord of every top-of-the-line game I could manage to get a hold of, is now just a worn out geezer. I want to upgrade, or get a completely new computer, or something. Currently my specs are:

128MB ATI Radeon 9000 with AGP

1.2GHz AMD Athlon Processor

512MB RAM

Now, it would be nice to upgrade to a ATI 9600 or 9800 or something and a new CPU, something around 2.2-2.4GHz. But, my rather savvy computer grandpa (The soul developer of my inane videogame fetish) said that my motherboard is so old that if I upgrade to meet those benchmarks that I listed above, that the motherboard will not be able to completely take advantage of the upgrades.

He's been wrong before (not saying he's completely senile), so I want to make sure his logic is correct. So... is it?

Sorry I could not tell you the specs of my motherboard, or maybe I already did, I don't know. I'm a complete fool when it comes to these things, so, uh, my apologies.

Also, this is all very early speculation. If you have anything to say about my thoughts on this, or anything else involved in this little scheme, please share, I want to upgrade, but I want even more to understand all this stuff. Thank you.

You'll get a better answer by asking in the GTA San Andreas->PC Troubleshooting forum.

GTA3Freak-2001

Just had one of those "there's something wrong with my PC and I can't work out how to fix it" moments accoumpanied by a "omg how simple was that solution".

You see I restarted my PC as its been running for atleast a month and I wanted to get a fresh restart feeling, waiting for the usual Windows logo, instead I get the "Windows did not start properly last time, yadda yadda start normally, safe mode etc. I go through all of these options and none result in any Windows loading just a black screen. I did that usual checking the setup and all that stuff and still windows fails to load. I get out my Win XP Cd and try and boot from that, no go it freezes when trying to load up the Windows setup. Yeah not good, as a last resort I nose around my bios settings and notice my Athlon XP 2000+ is running at 100Mhz/100Mhz. I thoght that can't be right so I up it to 133Mhz/100Mhz and suddenly everything else works like normal. Stupid thing was running at half-speed, this explains why GTASA runs so poorly.

Either way I'd say you'll probably be better off with a newer video card. I have an ATI Radeon 9600XT which plays SanAn just fine.

You will probably have to get a new motherboard eventually, but I would suggest going for the video card first, see how it handles it, and upgrade your mobo when it gets too ancient.

@Bauer

If you read the other pinned topic, the one about reading before posting, you'll find a link to a program called Everest Home Edition. Get that, don't worry it's free, and install it.

When you run it, it'll tell you more about your system than you ever thought possible. Most importantly in your case will be the make and model of the motherboard. With this bit of info you can search for it at the maker's site and see what CPUs it supports.

If your system is a pre-build, like a Dell or HP for example, you can skip the Everest suggest (although it's a good idea to get anyway, ya never know) head straight over to their site and look up the specs for that computer's model number to which it should tell you what make and model the motherboard is.

I'm on my laptop using my wireless internet and whenever I download anything, be it from fast servers or slow, I usually download at speeds of 200KB/sec, then after about thirty seconds it's dropped to only 50KB/sec.

I'm using a wireless B router, so the speeds aren't incredible or anything, but why the heck would it download fast, then slowly fade away to slow speeds?

What speed internet do you have?

If your normal download speed is 50KB/s, then it's just the initial download burst.

Just for grins, try downloading a file from your desktop system to your laptop

If you don't have your 2 systems set to for file sharing, or you just don't want to bother for this one simple thing, that's ok there is an easy way to do it by doing what I do.

FileZilla http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

Install the server on your desktop machine and the client on your laptop (unless you already have a FTP client on there). Set up the server with a single account and for that account to be able to access a set folder (don't make it C:\ not a good idea) and in that folder put a huge file (and ISO of a CD would be perfect for this test). Now on the laptop connect to the server using the FTP client using the login and pass you made, then start the download and watch the speeds.

If they do the same thing still, then the problem might be interferance around the house/apartment/whatever with the signal. This could be caused by a number of things; microwave ovens or even cordless and cell phones just to name a few and the more common ones.

Try moving the router around in the room or even learn about cantennas (a cheap DIY directional antenna) and point it in the direction the laptop is usually in.

If your laptop also as a ethernet port, jack into that and try a dowload that way as well, be sure to turn off the WiFi card just to make sure you are only pulling from the ethernet.

I have an optical logitech mouse with a wheel, and I go to my mouse settings in the control pannel to set the setting that allows you to scan how many lines per little wheel click you do. So I set it to 4 lines in stead of the default 1. But, after every time I restart my computer it doesn't save the setting. I click "apply" then "okay" when setting the wheel's scroll number, there is no "save".

Is there any way to keep it at 4?

(this is a really Random question, sorry)

I have a Logitech Internet Keyboard just like in the pic. When playing games the bastard sometimes refuses such key presses (Plus that annoying beep from the computer): Arrow Down + Arrow Left, Arrow Down + Arrow Up + Arrow Left, CTRL + Arrow Up + Arrow Left. When the right arrow key is pressed instead of the left one, everything is fine.

So basicly any combo of [KEY]+Arrow-Left doesn't work? Is this in games only or any where?

Also if it is in games only; is it all games or select game(s)?

I know in GTAVC I can't press 3 keys (anyway where and any 3) at once on my plain keyboard. But in something like BF42 or BFV I can hold W for gas while using the number-pad keys for my flight control, or do things like running forward and straff left or right and jump or reload if need be.

What is the Difference between DDR and RD Ram as I want to upgrade my 512 (4x128) to a gig but RD seems more expensive than DDR

DDR is "double data date" Ram, and is the current standard running at speeds between 200 and 400mhz

RD is Ramubus DRAM, and runs at speeds betwen 800 and 1200mhz, but only has sizes up to 256mb, and requires special components to utilize, and only certain programs utilize it. its generally inteded for CAD and sh*t like that.

So I guess that means I will need a new motherboard considering a 256 RD cost $100.00 - 250.00.

So which is better for average use and gaming.

they would be equal, games arent configured to use RD Ram. it would be cheaper/wiser to get DDR
