My PC is too 1337 for a floppy drive.. anyone else got any ideas on how to get round this foolishness?

I take you want to make this disc so that incase you forget your password you can either get the hint for what it is or completely reset it, right?

With no floppy drive, so far Google hasn't turned anything up.

I do know of, but forgot the name off hand, of a LiveCD of Linux that includes a tool that can read the file that XP uses to store the passwords and then tries to decrypt it. I've used a Windows version of the program to help me remember one of my passwords, once it got part of it I was able to remember the rest on my own but it took a good little while atleast of those one (minor account with a simple password....I just hadn't used the account for a long damn time).

I've got another question.. I was messing around clicking things one day a while ago, and I clicked something with no programs running which told me how much memory each user was taking, but the only problem is.. I can't remember what it is, it was that long ago. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? I did go into the c:\documents and settings folder and right click properties on each one either.

If you mean memory as in RAM, then task manager can show you which processes a certain user is running, and it's memory usage..

However, from the context of your post, I am guessing that what you actually meant is how much HD Space is each user taking up, in which case, you need to go to control panel>system>advanced>user profiles>settings, and you will get a window with a list of information, including account size.

That's what I wanted, thanks. I'll remember that.

go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and open the file hosts in Notepad or so.

Find the line containing '<ip> messenger.hotmail.com' where <ip> is an IP address, and remove it.

I opened it but its blank with me :S

I was looking at the same thing last night, anyway, have you tried uninstalling this msnserverx thing, and then connecting to msn? Failing that, completly remove msn, try windows messenger, and then install msn.

Well, maybe the desktop topic is a better place for this, but it is more a random question.

I have a little problem with video output.

I have a Sparkle GeForce 6600GT ViVo, it has DVI and VGA output, and a extra cable that allows me to connect svideo in/out cinch in/out.

Right now I got it setup that I have 2 monitors (one on dvi one on vga), set it up with Ultramon so I can play SA on the second monitor and do everything else on the first monitor.

Now I also have a Cinch video out, which is connected to my TV right now.

But Nvidia Nview doesn't allow spanning or cloning over 3 displays, thoug in the Nview settings I can pick monitor 1 + tv, monitor 2 + tv or monitor 1 + monitor 2, but not all 3 at the same time.

Ultramon only sees the 2 monitors and not the TV so that won't help either.

Is there any way to enable them all 3 at the same time? VGA, DVI and Video Out.

Go into Safe Mode and run Ad-Aware and Spybot

Plus, I'm sorry I forgot this earlier, you can also follow this after running the 2 programs mentioned above.

@Mindless

How much do you have to spend?

Are you solely a nVidia fan, or are you willing to go to ATI if in your budget can perform better?

BTW, if you plan to play BF2, you'll need atleast a FX 5700 or ATI 8500/9500 or better.

@Hunter

I don't know of a site that can do it. However there is Everest Home Edition which is free and it'll tell you more than you ever wanted to know.

I'm looking in the $100- $130 range. I would go ATI if its beter budget-wise, i've never had one before so i don't know which is better.

PNY GeForce 6200 128MB for $102 AMR (originally $122) + $4shipping = $106 (or $126). Not a great card from the 6XXX series, but it's tons better than the 5700 you were looking at and only a few bucks more.

Gigabyte GeForce 6200 128MB for $109+$3.50 shipping = $112.50

Chaintech GeForce 6600 128MB for $116+$3.50 shipping = $119.50

The GeForce 6600 is a much better than the 6200, keep in mind this one isn't a GT or Ultra it's just a vanilla 6600.

On the ATI side there are a number of 9600's and 9800's in their series. Which one of those to get I have no idea, besides the obvious that the 9800 is better than the 9600. What I mean is how well they stack up against a FX5700, 6200 or 6600 I don't really know.

If it was me (and damn I really wish it was, I wish that 6600 was there at the price when I was shopping for a new card at the beginning of this year), I would have get the 6600. Based on the fact that games are GFX hungry and having a 5700 series card is thought of having a low end GFX, so it seems these days. So no point in getting a card that's at the bottom of the barrel and then have to kick youself in a few months (like I want to) when the next game you want comes out and wants a better card.

Like I said, the 5700 is the lowest card you can have for BF2, and it is playable but I have to set everything low even though the graphics are still great to look at.

That 6600 looks like what i will get. I have a question though. i noticed that its agp 4x/8x. Ahats the difference between those and pci? I've seen video cards in both forms, and am wondering whats the difference and which form(s) i have on my motherboard. Thanks for all your help.

Edit: Heres what my motherboard slots look like

Unless I'm looking at it wrong, and if you use the Everest Home Edition I linked to earlier (so pardon me for not doing that again) it'll tell you if you graphics is AGP or not.

Judging from that pic, the top card is the video card. The one in that green slot. If that is the case then it looks like a AGP 1x/2x/4x slot, this is where Everest will again come in useful. Again if that is the AGP slot it'll tell you want speeds it supports, and if 4x isn't one of them you're really screwed.

This also looks like a pre-built system, so if you can tell me the make and model number of it I can look up a specs sheet on it and more details.

looks like i do have agp. what does it mean when it says agp is disabled?

my pc is a pre built one, a dell dimension 4550 2 years old (pretty sure)

That is rather confusing. Because you are sure you're using that card for your monitor, right?

The monitor is plugged into a card along the PCI bay opennings and not up higher above them, right?

This could be a fault of Dell, which I won't even go into my "I hate Dell rant".

If you are 100% sure you are using that MX 420 card for your GFX and you monitor is plugged into it, then ignore that warning and just stick the new card in and it should work just as well.

If you really want to, go into Dell's BIOS (however that is done) and see what the BIOS says about the video. It's possible that if you have an on-board video and then you installed the MX 420 at some point and just started using that, that the BIOS said "ok fine whatever" and the OS doesn't care either and it's just working anyway. But you can possiblily disable the on-board video and turn on the AGP.

BTW, if you can afford it, see if you can swap out that 256MB RAM stick for another 512MB stick and you'll be even happier. Just something to think about for later.

im sure i'm using that card, not onboard video. I don't even have onboard video. The card came with this pc. the card is plugged along by the pci openings, and it is the first row of slots. It's set back farther and is a bit smaller than the PCI slots. I'm probably gonna replace that stick of ram, i just have not gotten around to it. I will get that card. Thanks for all your help
