Mafia Righthand_Man
I've got a question about DDR RAM. I'm thinking about buying some RAM for gaming; what speed and PCXXXX type should I be looking for that is quality stuff? It doesn't have to be the absolute best but enough that I would see a significant increase in performance in gaming, etc.
Wolf68k
@ViceDog Actually the mobo is ASUS A7V8X-LA which is why it only has 3 PCI slots, the A7V8X has 6 PCI slots. But as you can see you have an AGP slot, not only that it's AGP 8x. So now you know what to shop for. @Luke2004 What OS? It could be that pagefile as expanded a bit more for one reason or another. You said you cleared the cache, what about the Temp files? @Mafia Righthand_Man If you don't give a damn too much, and you know for sure that your mobo does infact support DDR, then you can get PC3200 (aka DDR400). Then even if your mobo only supports up to let's say PC2700, the PC3200 will work but at a PC2700 speed. If you want get exactly the max your mobo will support, for example PC2700, and safe yourself a few bucks then you need to know what mobo you have and what kind of RAM it supports. I hope it's not dangerous or I think I have found the source of my computers problems. svchost.exe is part of Windows, it's not malicious. Although I guess if a virus replaced the standard svchost.exe file with something bad then it could be dangerous, but I doubt that would happen, and it's normal for the legitimate process to want to connect to the internet. CrazyDude
The only thing I recognise is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe It asks for access from my ZoneAlarm firewall. I hope it's not dangerous or I think I have found the source of my computers problems. for the love of... LEAVE SVCHOST ALONE svchost.exe is a system process belonging to the Microsoft Windows Operating System which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. Now there is a Worm that takes advantage of svchost so do a nice virus scan with updated definitions to check that out. With that said you should ALWAYS do a google search on a process before you deside if it's good or bad. @Parry: You have alot of processes running. Some of those could probably be turned off with out harming the system. Luke2004
@Luke2004What OS? It could be that pagefile as expanded a bit more for one reason or another. You said you cleared the cache, what about the Temp files? It windows XP professional, I've cleared all my browsers temp files etc. but I know sometimes the pc leaves temp files, although I've never touched them before and don't really want to. I've also tried looking for other things such as old requests that need deleting but everythings up to date, what's this pagefile thing? If it's expanding how do I make it go back down to what it was? - Luke.

I may be wrong here, but I think the pagefile is a part of the hard drive that the OS allocates as temporary storage, instead of filling physical memory with stuff, it uses the HD instead. It should be cleared by a restart, or even just closing some programs. However, I don't understand why 100mb matters so much when you have 68GB left... In fact maybe you had 67.95GB free before, but now only have 67.94GB- that would only mean 10mb of difference, but the rounding to 1dp means that it looks to be significantly more than that. But it seems i might need a more powerfull power setup, of our 300 watts. Would it be possible to replace that as well? Or does it need to be fed externally? Please...? Any recomendations.. etc..? What cards did you have in mind? And yes, if your PC has AGP, any AGP card will be fine, although the power thing may be an issue in newer cards. If you're trying to stay on top of gaming, I'd go for a mid-level card for now. It appears PCI-E is the next step in video cards, and most will need to upgrade some components to support it. Personally I wouldn't want to buy a top-level card now and another top PCI-E card when they're more supported, I'd go for a 9600XT right now. Wolf68k
I'd hate my desktop to have loads of icons on; I made a folder called Desktop to get rid of them all. - Luke. Why not just delete the the shortcuts on the desktop that you want don't on there? They are just shortcuts after all, it's not going to hurt anything to just delete them. @Vicedog Yes any AGP card will work. As for the PSU (Power Supply Unit, "power setup" as you called it), yes it might be a good idea to replace that as well. Go with a good brand's 400watts or better. I've got an Antec TRUE430 which delievers 420watts per 12volt rail, where most PSU are XXXwatts all 12volt rails combind.

Not quite 420W on each rail, but something like that, dedicated circuits or some such. Anyhow, I highly recommend the TruePower line. Enermax is also good. sysnode.org
magical_trevor
I would like to create a password reset disk for my PC running XP Pro, but unfortunately, this PC does not have a floppy drive.. Does this mean I can't make a password reset disk? When I open the wizard, it asks me to insert a blank, formatted disk into Drive F, but Drive F is actually the memory card reader on my printer, so obviously I can't put a floppy disk in there... So is there any way I can use a CD-R, DVD+RW or a USB flash drive instead of a floppy disk?

Nope, it won't let me change the path it all, and it insists on having a floppy disk, which is a bit stupid- surely Windows can detect I don't have a floppy drive and give me another option.. but apparently not. Luke2004
Could you unplug your printer, so the drive becomes free, and then stick in your usb stick, it should take on the letter of that drive. I think that this may work. - Luke.

A USB Pen Drive doesn't use the same file system as a floppy drive, so I'm pretty sure there's no way of tricking Windows like that.. Also, my Pen Drive is recognised as a HDD by XP, not removable storage, and if I plug the USB Stick in the printer's slot, it still doesn't get assigned to the letter F:/, I don't think the letter allocations work like that.
