ThaddeusMcKlown
I'm not 100 percent but i believe T1 can support faster speeds, but isn't it tons more expensive? I'm getting the T1 line for free. My dad's company wants to give all it's employees T1 lines at their houses so they can work from home more efficiently. facugaich
As for the fastest connection....I read in an article somewhere a few months back about some colleges or something that sent an insanely large file from coast to coast in a few seconds. I tried googling it right now but couldn't come up with much. You may be talking about the Abilene Network, created by the Internet2 group. A few years ago I read an article about 1GB per second transfer rate. However, the Internet2 website doesn't mention anything about transer rates, probably because it focus in other things besides that one. Wikipedia reads: When established in 1999, the Abilene network backbone had a capacity of 2.5 gigabits per second. In 2003 an upgrade to 10 gigabits per second commenced and the completion of this was announced on February 4, 2004. 10 Gigabits = 1,25 Gigabytes, so there you go, but that info is from 2004. @Dalp: I don't know about moving it back, but maybe preventing it to move to the other desktop in the first place? It's got to be in some configuration file, probably in the registry so you could try unintall them, clean registry and reinstall.
Platinum.
Hello guys, got a question for you all. How would a TV with a PC Input perform? Would it be the same as a monitor, would it ghost a bit? Here's the TV: Samsung 23" I've gone with a TV because I wanted HD Technology and no monitors I can find for under £700-£800 have it. How would the TV perform? Would it be worse/same/better than a normal monitor, with response times etc? Mainly I want an HD Monitor so that I can watch HD DVDs or Blu-Ray films, but I can't seem to be able to find either of the drives to put in my PC. Is there anbody that you can find that sells them? I've tried, Ebuyer, PC World and Amazon. I don't really no where else to look. Cheers for your help!

TheGuyFromThere
To cut the technical mumbo to a shrot: It has worked absolutley fine up until now. It's a USB 2.0 running on a 1.0 though, but this hasn't stopped it in the past, just slowed it. Problem: I plug in my external hard disk into my USB to get some photos from it (Used primarily for photos and that sort of storage) but to my horror it's all gone... it happened once before whenever I was in a folder with a few photos, it locked on me, I closed it, explorer closed restarted etc etc and the whole folder was deleted, but this time the whole HD is whiped. But it's still reading that 29gigs of it are missing. So the files are still there. Anyone have any idea what's happened here? It didn't crash in the root before, and I certainly didn't delete these folders. Some of them are precious folders to me with thousands of photos I've taken over the years. EHD is: I've tried updating the drivers, but mine are apparently the most up-to-date. Perhaps I need a tool to recover lost/deleted data? Help!! inactive
anus
Are you sure that the stuff on that HDD is not hidden, just check to see if Windows is showing hidden files. If that's not the case, I'd try a data recovery programme to get the stuff on the drive back, I'm not sure whetherit will work, but it's worth a try. king surfer
So, my ancient PC is lacking an ethernet port and I am currently running my internet through the USB 1.0. I was wondering if, because of this, my internet may be functioning slower than it would through ethernet? Also, are ethernet cards fairly easy to install yourself or would it need a technician? |Zephyr|
Also, are ethernet cards fairly easy to install yourself or would it need a technician? Its as simple as this. 1) open your case 2) get your ethernet card 3) locate your PCI slot 4) plug the card into the PCI slot 5) put a screw in to support it 6) put your case back on. Probably take around 5 minutes all up.
Forfit
I have a question! What's better, 7600GT AGP or 7800GS AGP. I think it might be the 7600GT price/performance wise. Which is what i'm looking for, anyone else have a thought?
|Zephyr|
7600GT AGP? Dam, I didn't know they released it in AGP. Are you sure they did? Could you link me to one you would buy? I know for a fact, that the 7800GS is the fastest AGP card out there. I found a 7800GS online for $450 AUD. I know that the 7600GT PCI-e online are about $320AUD, and I know that AGP cost more than PCI-e, so I'm guessing about $350ish AUD for a 7600GT AGP, if theyre out there... That said, if you can afford the extra $100, I reckon it would be worth going for the 7800GS. I have a PCI-e 7600GT, and not much holds it back. It plays BF2, COD2, etc at high settings with no lag at all. Hope I helped Forfit.
Forfit
Thanks Zephyr, here's the link to the 7600GT. It says 172 USD which i think is like 223 AUD. So it is significantly cheaper than the 7800GS, and i have seen Benchies showing it keep up with the 7800gs....it also consumes less power and runs cooler, i think i might get rid of my 6800 and buy it. Fozzy Fozborne
Alright, I need the biggest hard drive for around $100 USD. I was looking at the following 2 and trying to decide which one would be best for me. Western Digital 320 GB or Seagate Barracuda 320 GB (Perpendicular Recording) If anyone could find a bigger hard drive for around $100 that would be good, if not, then which one of the above 2 would be best for my application? I was going for the Seagate because it has a better warrantee (5 years vs 3 years). Unfortunately, it has perpendicuar recording, which I hear raises heat levels to unsafe levels. Also, someone said that they couldn't use the Seagate vertically (I need to use it vertically.) I'm going to use this in a Tvix where heat levels get high due to lack of ventilation. Also, the hard drive MUST be IDE. THX Edited September 8, 2006 by Fozzy Fozborne

TheGuyFromThere
In response to my EHD problem. Got some badass spyware, viruses, etc, and I had to reinstall my PC... nothing would start up.. first thing I'd see was 'Explorer has to close because it takes up the rear (0x0000022)' or something like that. Anyway, after a reinstall it works great. Thanks guys. inactive

PSXtreme
ok this question is pretty simple. Is it possible to have RAID on drives that aren't the primary hard drive or whatever? So I could set up the hard drives like this: C: 74 GB WD Raptor 10,000 RPM (system drive) D: 2x500GB WD Caviars in RAID 1 for storage Is it possible to have that setup? Also, would it be possible to add another 2 drives in the future as E: 2x500GB in RAID 1 as well?
Loman
I just got my shipment of computer stuff, and everything is great. The only problem I had (aside from finding the smaller things I ordered in the gigantic box full of packing peanuts) was that my motherboard didn't have an I/O Shield with it. The manual says that it should have had one, so should I contact the motherboard manufacturer or the place I ordered the motherboard from to get a new one? Do you think I'll get it free, or will I have to buy one? Right now there is a hole in my case around the I/O slots on my motherboard, it doesn't seem to be affecting performance, but I'd still like an I/O shield just so it would look better, and probably increase airflow. In case you're wondering "WTF is an I/O Shield?", it's one of these:
Fozzy Fozborne
@Loman, try calling the manufacturer of your mobo (asus, gigabit, etc) they give them the model number of your board and they should just ship you one for free. This is sort of a strange product, but it would be really convenient to have- Is there such a product that would let you form an wireless USB connection from your PC to a USB enabled device? It would have to have good range, because I want to put the device downstairs and have my PC upstairs, while still being able to add information to the hard drive of the device. Oh, and if it matters here is the device.
facugaich
Fozzy, that technology is called (guess how) Wireless USB or WUSB for short. You could back up every program (i.e. copy their directories in 'Program Files' or wherever you have them installed), back up all their registry entries, and find any hidden files they may have written. However, if you do it that way you're not going to be helping much by reformatting because all the sh*t will still be there. You're really better off just reinstalling everything after you reformat. ~ Proud Supporter of the Child's Play Charity! | GTANET + Child's Play ~
Dalpura
I've got a Seagate 300Gb external hard drive. And when I go into one certain directory that contains seven folders explorer just crashes -- straight away no exceptions. Any ideas what could cause this? I've got about fifteen videos (avi) to each folder, and that's it. It's only started since I've made the seventh folder, but I still cannot work it out why, and I can't even just delete that folder because it crashes immediately. Thanks. fido2
Dalpura: Chances are theres a video or two getting thumbnailed by windows with some crappy codec that only works in a clean media player environment, and crashes explorer when its used any other way. If this is true, a quick workaround would be to set a folder that works to view as Tiles, then go to Tools > Folder Options... > View tab > Apply to All Folders. If it turns out it is a problem with the codec of one of the videos, try to uninstall it or upgrade it. Use gspot to identify the codec. Not that I know what Im talking about when it comes to codecs and sh*t, but I think I've had this problem with a certain directshow filter before. ThaddeusMcKlown: I've heard good things about Foxit Reader. PSXtreme: Certainly. Also, consider RAID 5. The skinny: 1000GB over three drives, with redundancy.
