Wolf68k
@DiVaio Restart the system. See if they can be deleted then. If not, the restart into SafeMode and try to delete them then. If not right down their exact full file path name; for example since you said there were on your desktop and assuming your using XP C:\Documents and Settings\DiVaio\Desktop\badfile.txt Now restart and this time select SafeMode with Command Prompt. You'll login like normal but instead of seeing the normal desktop you'll see a CMD window and it's just the command prompt. Now navigate to the desktop folder using the cd command Once there use the del command to delete the file. If you have no idea how do any of this and how to use the commands let me know and I'll go into more detail.
DiVaio
Thanks man, I'll try to figure it out. You can enter safemode by pressing F2 during the startup or something, right? edit: I tried to hold F8 during startup which should get me into some kind of menu. Is this the right button? Wolf68k
The key is F8 but you have to tab it before you see the Windows XP load screen. So as soon as you see the BIOS post or splash screen you need to start tabbing F8.
Rocketkiller
My WMP10 started acting up lately, but I can't uninstall it. I deleted all of it's files and every registry entry involved with it, but when I try to install it says a newer version is installed. What am I missing? GTA3Freak-2001
I have ordered a new sound card(Creative SB Audigy 2 Value) to replace my crappy onboard stuff so I can make use of my 5.1 speakers. I am just wondering about if the onboard sound needs to be disabled or something to avoid conflicts and whatever other problems? I understand that with onboard video you need to disable it in the BIOs before installing a video card but I am not sure if the same goes for sound cards? Forfit
When i installed my SB Live! I just disabled the Onboard in the BIOS to be safe, it won't hurt anything to do so anyways. In fact, i believe that my BIOS has an "Automatic" option or something like that, so that when i installed my Soundcard it would have disabled it automatically anyways i believe. And you can leave your onboard on also. I know i just pretty much gave you like three answers but i'm positive you can just leave it enabled and it won't do anything. Wolf68k
@rocketkiller You're stuck with WMP10, shouldn't have installed it to start with. By the time WMP11 comes out then WMP10 will patched to act right but 11will be the crap version. It's been like this since WMP6. If you can get WMP10 reinstalled correctly again then try this: http://ezinearticles.com/?Uninstall-Window...-Again&id=56655 or http://windowsxp.mvps.org/wmp10arp.htm Next time do some research for trying to mindlessly deleting stuff. Remember this is Windows. You alter things the wrong way you've FUBARed the OS. @GTA3Freak-2001 There are 2 schools of thought. Disable the on-board audio in the BIOS and use sololy a good/real sound card. OR; keep the on-board sound. Why keep the on-board? Well as a guy I use to know did he set TeamSpeak to the on-board for mic and headphones while games are using the PCI card and his speakers. Nice idea but I perefer to listen to the game via headphones to make it easier to hear those softer sounds of someing sneaking around....but that's for a whole topic to debate that. And that's just one example of the some what bizzare reasons some people use both. Personally I just disabled the on-board audio and just use the PCI card. Mxyzptlk
Hello PC gurus! Recently (within last few days) my PC has been making a lot of whirls and chatter like it's reading, even when it's on idle and no processes are running. It would even happen after idling from a fresh reboot. I understand the fans, HDDs, and vibration could all be the causes, but it's not a constant regular noise, but it has peaks and valleys. Guess I'll open the case and poke around tonight. What should I check for in the way of wiring, loose screws, dirty fans, etc? Thanks fellas. Wolf68k
First before opening the case and poking around, make sure the system is completely off, including the PSU. Fans can have on again off again noises, peaks and valleys and anything else you can think of to describe it, so yes check them for dust and anything that might be getting in the blades. If there is dust use a can of compressed air, in short burst, to clean the dust off. If there is a bunch of dust then if you can, or feel safe enough to do it without screwing up, take the fan out of the case and then clean it. As for screws, first make sure you're using a screw driver without a magnetic tip, and tighten them down but no too much. The best rule of thumb I can give is; use a light grip and tighten it down until it won't turn. Then use a frim grip and give it a 1/4 turn. Any more you run the risk of stripping the threads. It's a PC not a car, so you don't need a torque wrench.

XMike
Okay, I usally have Norton Internet Security running on my computer all the time. But when ever I try to start up online games like BF2 or FEAR, I get a message asking if I want to permit access or block access. I click Permit and it just freezes, so I have to manually restart each time. I can turn it off before I begin playing and turn it back on when I'm done but that can get annoying. Is there a way I can make it allow certain programs automatic access? I've been looking through options but got nothing. Edit: So you know, it also does this every time I try to run a program that uses the internet, like Limewire or Bearshare. So I have to turn it off before I open them, too. Mxyzptlk
Thanks for the help Wolf, I cleared away the dust but the problem remained. Turns out to be the CPU cooling fan, so I just have to find a replacement this weekend. Mike, I'm pretty sure you can set rules or exceptions for a range of programs, but let the experts tell you instead.

Yeah, that's what I think too, I just don't know where I can allow exceptions If nobody here knows (unlikely) I will try and find the manual that came with the CD if that says anything. I'm pretty sure the computer has to be on to run the task. How can it be off, and the processor think (without electricity running through it) "Hmm... i think i oughtta turn on and run this task now." If i'm wrong on this, then i learned something new today. vALKYR
Question: I have a Maxtor 160GB HDD and it's doing a scratching noise all the time I do something heavy, like opening a folder with 1000000000 mp3's or unzipping a file or whatever. It's doing that since the beginning but I'm just asking whether this is a sign that it's on it's way out or not because a friend of mine said that's not normal (meaning a HDD should be totally quiet)
Cran.
It's a internal harddrive, right? Not an external right? When did it start? If it did do it from the begining, it should be fine. How old is it?

How old is it? Released to my company November 2004 by Maxtor and I immediatly took it home. I just did a advanced ~2 hour scan test for my (internal, yes) DiamondPlus 9 HDD, has been certified error free so I guess it's ok.
anus
Val, First of all, I'm not surprised your Mactor is starting to f*ck up. Maxtor is the worst HDD maker there is in terms of reliability. Mine died in five years (very soon compared to the life of good HDDs). Secondly, the Windows built-in Disk Scanner sucks. It's really not powerful enough to detect every single error there is. Try something like HDTune to check the HDD's health and then fix the errors with Maxtor's disk utility (Seagate has DiscWizard, but I'm not sure about Maxtor) which can probably be found at their site. Maxtor is the worst HDD maker there is in terms of reliability. Mine died in five years (very soon compared to the life of good HDDs). Yeah, Maxtor seems to be a lower end hdd maker. But, now since Segate owns them, they are probably just trying to get rid of all heir old stock now(I see tons of sales in the stores on those drives) and (hopefully) replacing them with better made drives. But, thats fine with me, since I have not had 1 problem with maxtor in years (and I own 4 of their drives). I have another question. How much can I expect to pay for 1gig of pc800 ram on ebay? I would really like to get some, but some of those auctions and buy it now are like $200+. Also, whats that one site that you type in your ebay search and it searches for common mispellings of words in the auction title? I'd like to check there for some good deals. MiNdLeSs
Is there a dvd authoring program where I can set certain areas as buttons? I ask because I got a dvd from a trip I went on and it highlighted the events of it. I'm copying it (yes, It's legal, the guy who made it says he doesn't care) and It only plays on the pc, the dvd player only plays sound and no video. So what I'm gonna do, use the same background video for the menu they used and just set the button areas over the text on the video. I'll then link it to the video files. Is there any program that will let me do this?
BCspeed34
How well will a Radeon X1900 Crossfire (512 MB) with 2 GB of RAM run on BF2? Will it allow ultrahigh with minimum/no lag? The CPU will be a Pentium 4 HT (3.2 Ghz). i have not experienced it, but I assume it would. I can run it on a 900mhz PIII and 512mb ram fine (all low graphics settings though, lol) Whats ultrahigh? Like screen resolution?
BCspeed34
You can manually edit the settings, so instead of playing with all high settings, you can play 'secret' ultrahigh settings. Video.con VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 4 VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 4 VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 4 VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 4 VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 4 VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 4 VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 4 VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 4 All of the above settings can be adjusted from within the in-game Video settings. However the highest they can be set to is High from within the game (a value of 3). By setting them each to 4 in Video.con (as shown above), you will have them displayed as 'Videosettings_Ultrahigh' in the in-game Video settings screen, and some people believe this increases the graphics quality to Ultrahigh levels. I didn't see any impact from this change, but if you want the absolute best quality in BF2 give it a try. Also, I have been considering, that instead of purchasing a x1900 Crossfire, would I be better off with TWO 7800 GT's? ________________________________________ 専車SODO-MOTO International Vehicle Importers
