CrazyDude
About this memory leaks things I cried about before, if anyone else has it: Type "about:config" in an empty tab and then create a new boolean value called config.trim_on_minimize and set it to true. Now my firefox.exe is using 12 MB of runtime after 5 minutes. Yesterday, my firefox.exe was using 953 MB of Runtime after 1 hour (that's more than Battefield 2) Also setting these values in about:config helps a lot: browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers=0 browser.cache.memory.enable=false Tada. I'm guessing you got this from a post on the mozzilla forums so were there any negative impacts mentioned? -edit: we'll there's atleast one. Now my home button doesn't work and when I start firefox my homepage doesn't come up. Edited February 14, 2006 by Pilate
Wolf68k
@Warlord Why do I have feeling this is something to get around the Admin account on a school's PC? Which would be illegal. @vALKYR Nice find. For anyone looking for more info on these settings... config.trim_on_minimize Windows-Only browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers browser.cache.memory.enable Another to add to that might be browser.cache.memory.capacity=0 which is said to be same as setting browser.cache.memory.enable=false @Mindless I don't know about balance, but it'll max it. This system is obviously not you main gamer rig. So don't worry about balance too much.

But I can't install it, because I'm a limited user. So, any help? Guess you missed the illegal part. It doesn't matter if it's a school, library, net cafe, or you're next door neighbor. If you have not been given permission to crack the password of a computer, admin or other wise, it is illegal. If it was your computer, then you can crack it all you want. Anything else will land your a** in jail...so don't bend over for the soap. @matthew1g About the Win98 BSoD with Gates. Old news. One of his developers was connecting a printer for press demo when it BSoD. As for the Linux question. There are programs that can do the same job programs in Windows can. In same cases there are Linux versions. In most there are clones based on the original's source code or it was backwards engineered. @boobtronic Speakers need to breath just like us humans, ok maybe not just like us but they need to breath anyway.. vALKYR
browser.cache.memory.enable has been reported as a bit of a false friend. It does decrease the amount of memory used by firefox.exe but sites like google or something like that will not work anymore. I tried setting it to it's default value and it still ain't 500 megs of runtime. It says below the 100 mb after testing this for 5 hours. On another note: A question I'm buying a XFX 7800GT Extreme Edition and in the pdf user manual it states that you need a 400W PSU supporting 20A on the 12V Rail. I have 420W and only 18A on the 12V Rail. I'm not taking any risks so I have to buy a new one. Now, I came to various no-name PSU's for a small amounf of money but I've also come across a Super Flower (not a no-name of course, they're good) PSU which is 400W and 20A on the 12V Rail. This is on the edge as it's exactly that what XFX recommends. And this card I want is an Extreme Edition, meaning that's 50 Mhz more than a normal 7800GT clocks. So, should I buy the Super Flower Quality PSU or a rather no-name PSU but supporting e.g 550W and 35W on the 12V Rail which could even drive a 7800GTX in SLI Mode. Tips and help appreciated. Wolf68k
I learned the hard way about the browser.cache.memory.enable too. I have it set to true and browser.cache.memory.capacity set to -1, originally it was set to something like 65355 I forget. If you go the link I left before for that setting you can see different levels you can set it to besides -1 which is "Automatically decide the maximum memory to use to cache decoded images and chrome based on the total amount of RAM." For your PSU question; what is the "no-name brand" you're looking at? Where are you looking and make I can help find you what you need? Knowing what the budget is can help if it's that big of a deal. Super Flower might be a brand you know, but it's a new one on me. So the same story may be the same for you on that "no-name brand".

Wolf68k
To change the IP address used by your modem out to the internet? Normally yes, but it also depends if your ISP uses dynamic or static IP addressing. If it's dynamic; in your router go the Status page and there should be a DHCP Release and Renew buttons. Click the Release, wait about 5-10secs, then click Renew. If it's static, call your ISP.
Ar2De2
Mine has reset and refresh, would those work, or do I have to be on the computer with the router? Apparently i'm not on a static or dynamic either, i'm on a PPPoE.

Wolf68k
@Ar2De2 Yes you have to use a computer to login to the router and there you'll find the things I'm talking about. @Taxman What browser? @vALKYR Ok my bad. When you said "no-name brand" you weren't kidding. Forget what I said. I would suggest the no-name brand because of it's amps on it's +12V rail. 7800GTX requires atleast 26A on the +12V The BFG 7800GT says it needs 26A, but for SLI it needs 34A. Waddy
Hi all, Quick question. I want to install a new hard drive to my machine, How hard or how easy is this to do for someone who can turn a PC on, and load the internet. I hate dragging my PC to the shop kinda thing, would prefer to do it myself. Is it a simple case of slotting it in, connecting it up, re -boot and away we go, or do I have to get involved in BIOS and all that stuff? PS, Thanks for that Link Wolf, sorted my question! Wolf68k
Installing a HDD is more or less easy. Are you installing a drive to replace the C drive or are you adding it for added storage? Added storage is easy and straight forward. First and formost read the damn manual. Learn how to set the jumpers to Slave. Mount the drive in the 3.5in bay area. Connect the IDE (or SATA as the case maybe) and power cable. Start up the PC. Windows XP makes it easy to format the extra drive; Start->Control Panel->Admin tools->Comptuer Management->Disk Management After that follow this and seems to be dead on; from Seagate but will work with any brand of drive. The other thing you can do if you buy a HDD that comes with a CD, you can boot with it and format the drive that way as well. Just remember to select Additional Storage if that is what you want to use the drive for. If you want to replace the C drive, and the HDD comes with a CD: Read the manual, for now set it to Slave Mount and connect the drive's IDE (or SATA as the case maybe) and power cables. Boot from the CD Select the drive to be formatted. There should also be an option to make it the new bootable. After it's done formatting it will (or should) automatically start doing a disc-to-disc copy. Shut down. Yank out the old drive....figure of speech ofcourse. Set the new drive to Master Boot up as normal and the OS is none the wisher it's on a new driver...other than the fact it has a lot more space. So when XFX says for their 7800GT: A 400W PSU supporting 20 Amps on the +12V Rail. And I buy the XFX 7800GT Extreme Gamer Edition (overclocked 50 MHz) You then say it's better to buy the no-name brand 550W with 35A (150W and 15 Amps more than required) than the somewhat more quality PSU supporting exactly that what XFX states (400W and 20 Amps and also worth mentioning that I buy the 7800GT Extreme, not the normal 7800GT) Correct, mister wolf 68000? anus
I've got a question, I got a P3 heatsink today, and I want to wire it up to my video card, I've got a fan to go with it too. I just wanted to know whether the cheap thermal paste I have will hold it without falling. It's a no name thermal paste. Or would I need to drill holes in the heatsink and fit it into the clips? Also, I need to know how to remove the cooler off the video card without damaging the clips. And what would be the correct amount of thermal paste to use to stick a heatsink to a GPU/CPU? A picture would be nice. Thanks.
Wolf68k
@vALKYR Sorry I forgot who made the card. I just looked up the first one I thought of, besides eVGA. Do you have any other choices besides those 2 PSUs? The brand you know should work if XFX says you only need a 20A +12V rail. But there has to be more choices than those 2. You listed 2 PSUs does one of those include the brand you know or what? @Warlord It would help to know what card you're talking about.
_-playero-_
Something about linux I never understood (or took time to). In Ubuntu, you have this thing on the menu to install new programs. You choose the programs from a list, download, and the install. You can also use the Terminal to download and install programs. But what files like this: frontline-0.5.4.tar.gz What do I have to do to install and run those programs?
Taxman
@TaxmanWhat browser? Maxthon. It DOES work on IE, however, so I don't understand why Maxthon won't run it. And a stock OCed eVGA card would have been better then that for slightly cheaper...Plus, Copper heatsink makes it good for a 30Mhz OC again. Wolf68k
@Taxman I don't know anything about Maxthon. Sorry. @_-playero-_ Type: tar -tzvf frontline-0.5.4.tar.gz This is if it's filename.tar.gz or filename.tgz If it's just filename.tar then type: tar -tvf filename.tar @Mindless Something that big and if you're still using the system, it's very possible that it's already starting to be over written. The other thing you have to remember is that most of the better file recovery program require that you restore the file to a different drive than the source drive. EasyRecovery Pro but it ain't cheap and the trail will only let you see the files, if it let's you recover anything it'll be very small files. I have 3 choices: The SuperFlower (the brand I know) having 400W and 20 Amps thus having exactly that what XFX has to say about the requirements of their 7800GT. (and I buy the overclocked version.) The LC-Power (the brand I don't know) having 550W and 35 Amps thus having even enough for a 7800GTX from XFX.and The EZ-Cool 140 (also a brand I didn't hear of) having also 550W and 35 Amps.
