once and for all FRAME LIMIT ON OR OFF

Question

  • 0
Dr_WhoRide

Leave it on. The frame limiter just trys to normalize the frames that you see over the whole game, which makes it look over all smoother.

There is NO reason to play with the frame limiter off. Leave it on and get used to it, the gameplay is so much smoother that way.

Too bad.

There is one very good reason for somebody wo want to turn off the frame limiter. The game looks about 20X better, and runs smooth as hell.

Too bad you crash into some walls before they render...

Off. Forget the quality. I'd rather have a game that ran fast and looked okay than a game that ran super slow and looked great.. with frame limiter on, I get 40fps.. with it off, I get 80..

Hopefully a patch will be forthcoming that will take advantage of the superior systems that're out right now. Seems like they're purposely bottlenecking it with frame limit ON, which really sucks for those of us who actually have up to date systems than can still properly display 80+ fps AND allow textures to load on time, rather than playing on the gateway mom & dad bought these other kids 4 years ago :-x

Super slow? And turning it off makes the game LOOK better?

What kind of nonsense is that?!

The game runs just fine with it on, (unless you have a 386), and there's no damn texture problems, which 90% of the posts on this forum are for... People moaning about having their textures not loading up fast enough, and they end up having their limiter turned off...

Yes, it's a much better game at 60+ fps, but unless they fix the texture problems, it's not any better, perhaps except for running around in a garage...

I say, leave it on... On on on! Unless you have a particular need to have it off.

HAVE YOU GOT ANY FPS COUNTER?

I NEED IT

HOW CAN YOU CALCULATE YOUR FRAME RATE?

Fraps ( http://www.fraps.com ) can show you your framerates in-game. Never used it for that, but it's supposed to work.

Btw, there's really no need to capitalise your lines. Rather annoying, even.

but sometimes i drive so fast.. and the textures don't load fast enough or something.. and building are blocks of crap.. and then i have to wait a few seconds.. and then everything loads.. wtf...

I have heard of two solutions for this:

1) From display settings -> advanced -> direct3d set 'render no more than x frames ahead' to value 0.

2) If you have WindowsXP, try to run Vice City in Windows98 compatibility mode.

I TRIED BEFORE A...&*$%#!^%$#@%

sorry :colgate: , I tried before a fiew minutes this program because I saw a reference in an other topic.

Under Windows 2000 it shows 25-26fps during the intro video but when I press enter to skip the intro video the fps numbers dissapear. No screenshots, no .txt files. F|_|©K.

I am from Greece :sneaky:. What "Btw" means? My dictionary doesn't have a meaning for this word.

it´s a shortform on the internet, meaning "by the way".

I tryed turning the frame limiter off, and it wasn´t a too big difference, it just runs a little smoother with frame limiter on.

And I don´t feel my game runs to slow with it either.

Hello to all!

I counted my fps with Fraps yesterday.

In menus was 75 fps and in game was about 25fps.

Some times I got 30 but MANY times I got 15.

When I drive and from 25fps drobs to 5fps-15fps I loose the control of the car and I crash into a wall or into other cars.

IF I had ALWAYS 15fps without up-down, I could play well.

BUT I have an unstable frame rate from 3fps to 28fps while runing with a car.

If I'm on foot and move the mouse so that I can look down, I get about 40-50 fps!  :pp

My system is:

CPU: Pentium 3 @ 933MHz

Memory: 256MB RAM

Video Card: nVidia GeForce 2 with 32MB

Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster 128 PCI

OS: Windows 98

HD: Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm

note that I have installed ONLY Windows 98, Video/Sound Drivers, DirectX9, GTA VC and NOTHING ELSE!!! Neither programs nor other games.  :turn: (=])

I'm thinking to buy 256 more RAM or a GeForce 4 with 64MB or 128MB Memory.

But NOT both of them. One of them because I'm not rich!  ;)

Can anyone suggest me what to do to have an average of 32-38 fps without fall lower than 25fps?  :rol:

LOL :D

I wonder what kind of eyes some of you folks have, if you consider 40fps to be slow or jerky. Newsflash!!! : Your eyes can't discern any difference! You are talking crap, and the reason for the frame-limiter is simple and logical, it keeps the frame-rate constant, i.e. smooth, no big drops or surges, and allows the game engine to apply textures in a uniform fashion.

The game is also far less likely to freeze or crash if the frame-rate is constant, instead of jumping from 25fps to 100, then 65... etc.

"IF I had ALWAYS 15fps without up-down, I could play well.

...which is precisely my point, well said Ilias.

"what to do to have an average of 32-38 fps without fall lower than 25fps?"

Have you tried lowering the draw distance? It might look a bt crap, but it will certainly be smoother, and if you're after a speed increase, don't buy more RAM, get a new vid-card.

The Draw Distance if off.

The resolution is 640x480

No matter if fps Limiter is on or off I have the above results, but if I have it on fps not exceed 30.

Is 256MB RAM enough to achive a smooth gameplay?

I'd like to add that most people can only see at 18fps.

The game is going faster than you.

Do not mess with the speedy game.

If I'm runing with Cheetah and trying to turn smoothly a long turn, and from 28fps fall to 18fps, I will crash.

So I don't want high fps, but stable fps!

If you want stable FPS, play with frame limiter on, and upgrade your graphics card to a TI4200 128 mb RAM...

I have a 2700XP+, 512 DDR400 ram and a Radeon 9700 Pro, and i play with the limiter on.. Never has dropped to below 30 fps, always 30 @ 1280x1024 4x AA 4x AF.. Really, its no big difference between 30 and 80, our eyes are to slow.. I mean we cheat them when we look at movies or tv, always 24 fps..

I think the reason for this uncommon framerate behavior is that the game is made for the PS2 originally. It works a bit different. You can see it in the main menu (with fraps): The game renders only as many frames as necessary. When there's no animation in the menu, there's a very low framerate.

It seems to me that Rockstar did a minimum-work job. They wrote some kind of integrated emulator.

Also the gameplay is affected by the framerate. When I want to record a stunt with fraps, the framerate drops because of the data written to disk continually. And then I can't do the stunts anymore because the physics change.

Vice City makes a lot of fun, but technically it's not a well designed game.

@kissa

The compatibility mode also works with Windows 2000 SP2. You have to activate it.

Open a 'DOS' prompt and type

regsvr32 %system-root%appatch\slayerui.dll

@Kurgen

I have to correct you. The human eye/brain can notice framerates of about 70-100 fps. 30 fps is far from optimum or maximum smoothness.

That whole "your eyes can't see the diff between xx and yy frames/second" is completely irrelevant. Game engines all cycle through the same (simplified) procedure:

draw screen -> process user input (mouse & kb actions, whatever you're doing behind your comp) -> Draw next screen. Repeat ad infinitum.

From the above it's quite easy to deduce that higher framerates WILL give you smoother gameplay as the whole game will respond faster to whatever input you give it. And not just smoother - it can even process more of your input between any given points A & B...

And yes, there's a huge diff between 30 and 60 FPS, no matter what any biologist will tell you about the capabilities of the human eye. Any of you play shooters like Q3 or UT? If you do, don't tell me you don't notice the difference in accuracy a consistently higher FPS will give you.

Hardy, no probs - I don't mind being corrected  :)

Hardy & Vetinari, I know exactly what you're saying, but the point I was trying to make to the "I get 80fps without the frame-limiter" guys is that the consistency (as you rightly point out) is lost when the frame-limiter is switched off. Very little point in bragging about getting 100+ fps without the frame-limiter if the game drops to 15 fps as soon as you get into a firefight in the rain.

Also, I take your point about shooter games enjoying as many FPS as they can muster, and again, having as high a ceiling as possible is great, as the game is bound to drop frames in certain instances. However, this is where the less-experienced gamer will con themselves into thinking they're getting better performance than they actually are. It's very easy to get 150+ fps in most games, as long as you leave the mouse alone, and get your player to look at one floor tile, but start moving, scroll the mouse laterally, start a firefight, or, as usually happens in urban settings (e.g. Deus Ex), look thru a mesh fence, or better still look thru a mesh fence at another mesh fence behind it, and before you know it, your glorious 150+ fps becomes a decidedly emasculated 10fps, if you're lucky.

Horses for courses I suppose, and it's true that to get the best possible playability out of your PC, it's usually best to be one step behind the best spec available - that way you don't pay top dollar for something that'll be half-the-price in a few months, but (probably) better than anything the game was tested on, i.e. somewhere in the region of the recommended, as opposed to minimum spec.

You are perfectly correct tho', in saying that a framerate of 60fps or above (constant) is undoubtedly smoother overall than 30 fps constant, even tho' the eye can barely discern any real difference.

K.

Agree fully with your post Kurgen.

Just wanted to point out the eternal argument "the human eye can't even notice the difference" is a bogus one :)

Hello A NEWBIE Person Here

I agree with what Kurgen says....

For those of you who are arguing with each other......

For Faster CPU's

Download VC Limit Adjuster

and adjust the option on the top from 45 to 255

And TADA orly.gif

For Slow CPU's

i do'nt know what is the solution colgate.gif

But why dont you try spaceeistein's Draw Distance Mod

(TRYED IT IT'S GOOD THE GAME RUNS A LITTLE SMOOTH)

Here is my specs:

Windows XP MCE 2005

2 GB Ram

128 Video Ram (NVidia GeForce)

Seagate 140 GB HDD

HP Mainboard (My Computer is a HP)- Compaq Presario M2000
