HELP: Game won't start, no error message!

Hey gang, running Vice City on XP with fine specs.

the game installs fine, and the very first time I tried to load it, things went fine and I played no problem for hours!  Then, the very next time I tried, I clicked on the .exe file to open the game, and NOTHING happened -- the little windows hourglass popped up for a split second, the cd-rom spinned, and then nothing -- no error message, no system crash, no system slowdown -- i clicked and clicked and clicked and nothing happened!  It is odd to say the least -- even more odd considering it DID work at first, and has worked a FEW times since then -- it USUALLY does NOT work, but sometimes if I try, it will randomly decide to work -- and when it does work, it works perfectly!

I have tried many system restarts and reinstalls, to no avail.  Considering I spent 50 dollars on this, "sometimes" working is not enough -- I want to make it clear that it RARELY works, i'm not not whining here!  Can you imagine how much of a tease it is to only be able to play on rare occasions!?

I have tested out many other games and programs and they all run fine -- I have GTAIII for PC, and that works fine too and never had this problem.  I'm on my last nerve and about ready to exchange this  damn game, but christ, I love it so much in the few hours that I've played it that I'd hate to have to do that --

CAN ANYONE HELP -- please, I'm beggin' ya!

Specs:

XP

Athlon 2100+ on Biostar VIA KT333

512 mb DDR ram

Geforce 4200 128 ram

This is a long shot but i noticed loading VC takes quite a lot longer here if my Norton antivirus is enabled. Try disabling your antivirus - if you haven't already & see what gives (although i highly doubt it'll be related, judging from your description).

The mention of "the CD starts spinning, then nothing" actually reminds of some CD protection thingy going haywire - had sthing similar with another game in the past and could only solve it by using my other drive. Also worth a shot, if you have access to more than one CD drive (but don't go buying one "coz it'll solve it" - i'm just suggesting it as a possibility)

And another long shot: did you by any chance change the location of your "My Documents" folder while tweaking XP? Never know R* programmed the path to the files they leave behind there hardcoded (as in C:\blabla... instead of whatever path you changed it to).

I had this problem with GTA 3.  Then, it was my drivers.  Video drivers, that is.

Try installing the newest drivers.  If that doesn't work, work your way back version-wise from Newest drivers to Oldest drivers, and I bet one of them will work   ;)

[USERNAME GOES HERE]

I had a problem kind of like that...I rang tech support and this is what they said:

Get the exe file of the install cd and put that in your vice city folder instead of the current one.  It should then work.  I hope  :/.  Everytime that happens just do that.  It works for me :D.

with me (i also had the very same problem with several games) new drivers for my graphics and sound cards worked. also, sometimes it helped just to reboot and/or to close a few background applications. this IS weird because i have a cutting edge system.

[uSERNAME GOES HERE], you are a legend. I recently re-installed Windows XP and installed the latest nvidia drivers and wondered why VC wouldn't work. Rolled-back to the original microsoft drivers and vice works fine apart from the 60hz frame rate, but I'm downloading the fix for that now.

Cheers mate!  :D
