Where are my GTA IV homies at?

Recommended Posts

Believe it or not this is my first thread I’ve in this forum for a couple of years.

I know it’s not quite like once was. GTA IV like any video game or any piece of entertainment is subject to time and people move onto other things. Hell I don’t play GTA IV anywhere as much as I used to. I think it’s been about 4 years since I played through the story.

In saying that it’s still a great game to me and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

I guess one of the more unfortunate side effects on being on the forum as long as I have is I have seen so many people come and go over the years and I sometimes wonder what happened to them. If you’re still into GTA IV as we now approach 2026 please drop a comment. I’m genuinely curious who’s still around.

BTW incase anyone is looking at me thinking “who’s this guy?” I’m probably better known by my more recognisable usernames like Miamivicecity,  SonOfLiberty, Algonquin Assassin etc.

cant remember

Algonquin Assassin rings a bell to me. Doubt you will remember me though I probably used a different account with different username, (maybe niteye?)

My memories are pretty vague overal but I loved the mapping efforts, those map recreations from trailers/screenshots seem to have been lost to time.

Yeah i play gta 4 and the DLCs every now and then.

Still great games.

Also, I remember seeing the countdown on the game's website before the 1st trailer was released

From what I remember, the servers went down, prob due to some much traffic on the site.

Funny stuff, but the trailer was incredible when it was made available!

This was so so something man back in 2008 and also GT5 Prologue promos back then.

Today both of them are amazing on my pc with GT5 (2010 release, with mods) in rpcs3 and GTA IV played with mods countless times and removed for now to make way for The Crew 2 in offline mode and NFS Heat on my 256 GB SSD.

Pretty amazing still to this day for those 2 consoles in April 2008, Niko, Johny and Luis my men.

You still remember me. Don’t you? I was your BIGGEST follower back in the day. Has somebody else filled that role? If so, who? I’m back to having GTA III as my fav GTA though. Vice City is my second fav. I hope I didn’t disappoint you.

I actually still have all the trailers still installed on my 360.

Trailer 1 will always be my favourite since that was the first time seeing GTA IV and of course the first time we saw Niko, Liberty City etc.

I still play IV on my Xbox 360S.  I usually start a fresh play through on New Years Day and play the expansions later on in the year.

Why would you disappoint me Ben?

GTA III is a fantastic game and I don’t blame anyone for wanting it to be their favourite. Same with Vice City. I have noticed however you don’t seem to like GTA IV very much anymore which is fine btw if that’s what you mean by disappoint.

We’re all adults here and can make our own decisions on what we like/dislike so you’re free to do what you like. It’s not like you need my blessing/approval dude.

It’s just like how I decided to make amends with San Andreas and GTA V after years of blindly bashing them because it was stupid/immature. I can’t take any of it back, but I do try to see the good/great things about those games even if they’re not necessarily my favourite games in the series.

Funny you start this thread. I'm actually on my first proper playthrough of IV after 10 years. I've played the game on and off during that time but have never committed to a proper playthrough or played it for longer than a couple of days. I played the absolute sh*t out of this game from 2013-2015 which is probably why I ended up burning out on it for a bit.

At one point, IV was my favourite game of all time. But I've played a lot of games since 2015 and unfortunately, a few games have ended up overtaking it since. (RDR2, TLOU 1+2, Uncharted 4). That being said, returning to this game has been an amazing experience and I am still certain it is in my top 10, maybe even top 5 games of all time.

The city is what really holds up the best. Liberty City is still probably my favourite video game city of all time and it still feels so alive and holds it own against games that come out even today. It blew me away in 2009/10, it blew me away again in 2013-15 and it honestly even blows me away today in 2025.

For instance, I was mucking around in Bohan and found this spot I've never actually been to. It was a bunch of rocks behind Elizabetha's place that offer a beautiful view of the Algonquin skyline and it's quite cool I am still finding things that I didn't know existed in this game:

image.thumb.jpeg.2995d7031b945eadab9d460e287b4adb.jpeg

It's such a well designed city that is so lively and is still quite easily the best video game renedition of NYC.

The story also still holds up really well. Again, I have played games with better stores as time has passed  but this is the most unique GTA game out there in terms of tone. I think it's the GTA that is closest to RDR2 in that regard.

I also still love the driving and it remains the open world game with the best driving physics imo. This coupled with the euphoria engine has made it age really well. Pushing people off ledges/onto railway tracks never gets old. I honestly think that if this game released today with modern graphics and a few tweaks to the gameplay it would not look out of place among current gen titles. It was so ahead of it's time for 2008.

He said homies, not fans. Count me in then. I spend more time making fun of toxic GTA IV dick riders these days rather than play the game or generally discuss it, I did play it this morning though and went to see a show cause Roman called me. Still as amazing as always and the GTA IV and Liberty City's vibes are there. Never gets boring. I find the side activities so great and vibey but I must have already said this like a hundred times before, like the other things I probably said about a hundred times as to why this game is so special for me.

I'm relativerly new to this place, I've lurked here for like the past year and a half but only actually joined a couple of months ago. I remember just scrolling through the old threads, seeing the history of this place, names that have come and gone like atomic punk, DT, Femmefatale, reading the visceral hatred of V on these forums, reading all the GTA online update threads, all the radio discussions. This place is definitely a trip lol, this place was r/GTAIV before it was even a thing.

GTA IV, despite my eternal gripes with its fanbase, will always be such a Magical thing to me, when I first played it years ago on my cousin's PS3, dicking around broker and dukes, barely progressing through the story. I legit never got to Algonquin until I bought the game for myself 2 years ago, after getting back into GTA thanks to GTA V (got a 20$ gift card as a birthday gift and saw it on discount, best decision I've ever made). I view all the GTAs as masterpieces (even III) so I pretty much flip flop between them all, but IVs atmosphere and vibes just hit different, even if I personally prefer SA, VC and V over it (unless if I'm counting the DLCs, in which case it beats at least VC and V).

My last playthrough was in 2023 on my Xbox one x and it was a full 100% playthrough with the radar and hud off with free aim. It was really fun but I haven't played since, been waiting for a ps4/ps5 version for that.

I’d love to be able to play it on my PS5 even if it’s just a PS4 port similar to RDR.

I have never craved any other game as much as GTA 4. I waited for each trailer in anticipation, watched it many times and literally counted the days until its release. I bought an Xbox 360 Elite exclusively for GTA 4. I completed it four times that summer of 2008 and it was great. A unique game with incredible atmosphere and physics, an iconic metropolis, the best protagonist, and a dark and tragic story. I love GTA 4 and still play it to this day.
PS I've been reading this forum for decades, but made an account not so long ago.

I also love GTA IV and still play it to this day, just like all the other GTA titles. Thanks to our Chain Game here on the forum (shameless plug :D).

My last 100% playthrough was in October 2023. That included the main game and both DLCs. I also collected a lot of special vehicles during my last playthrough.

The memories from almost 20 years ago are still vivid. Like waiting for the first trailer, which ended in a Rockstar server crash :D Or watching streams shortly before the official release from people who had somehow already gotten their hands on the game. I can't remember which platform I watched the streams on, though. I initially thought it was Twitch, but that didn't exist until later.

I even bought a PS3 specifically for GTA IV back then, but I sold it again after the PC release. :D

Back to the topic "GTA IV Homies": I don't know you from before, nor anyone else, since I was rarely here before, and when I was, I mostly just read threads instead of writing myself. It's a shame, really, but I used to be more active in the German GTA communities.  I only became more active in GTAF after the German communities died out.

ArmyRaidFail404

I did a run through of GTA IV after watching Black Yoshi's video of it and I found a new appreciation for the game outside of it being a decent game from when I was young. Even beyond the usual appraisals, I just have to say that this game is actually quite a decent time capsule of late 2000s culture.

I have thought about learning modding to try to slowly eek out more of that experience (adding different songs, maybe some scripted ped events around the financial crash) but the game seems too perfect as it is. Not even the graphics have aged all that badly

Oh sick, waddup fellow Novacastian, any chance you a Knights fan as well?

Not much into footy these days, but I was when I was younger and yes a fan of the Knights too.

I remember when they won the grand final in 1997 and 2001.

Agreed so much, the city actually feels lived in, there is something about the NPC's; I think it is their models, textures and animations, the way they walk; it just feels f*cking right and organic, like actual real people going about their business, kinda hard to pinpoint and find a word for it but it just feels and looks great.

Something that unfortunately got lost with GTA 5, although you can see it was still there at one point in early build, like Trailer 1.

I purposefully logged back into the Forums after quite sometime away just to contribute to this topic, haha.

Algonquin Assassin is a username I remember.

I have not played IV for as long as I have not signed into the Forums, but by heck I still hold deeply onto my memories of IV.

It’s funny, and I can’t remember if I have ever shared this before, but when I first watched the trailer for IV all the way back on one of those PSN Magazine CDs that used to come with the magazines, I thought to myself “Is that it?” Whilst others were getting greatly and understandably excited for the release of GTA IV, I was still playing Vice City Stories. 😆

But oh how my opinions changed when I was first able to play IV on a crappy yellow CRT TV. The earliest memory I had of IV was going down to the boardwalk on Hove Beach - Firefly Island and accidentally getting into a fight with one of the Russian NPCs, who tumbled over the railings and came crashing down onto the beach below. When I manoeuvred Niko to go down to the beach and waited for an ambulance to show up and watched the paramedic perform CPR, but was unable to bring the ped back to life in the same way that the medics were able to do in GTAs before, I knew right then and there that here… things would be different.

I still hold GTA IV in high regards to this day and still consider it to be my favourite GTA, far surpassing the hours that I once plowed into messing around in GTA SA.

Been here since 2012. Haven't seen a lot of you here for a very long time, but maybe your new username made me not recognise you. Still remember you most as Miamivicecity, and the days when you were moderator in the V section pre-release. You always stood by IV back then, even when the other 90% despised it. Fellow Aussie here too mate! 🇦🇺

Honestly when I saw your username, I thought you were the infamous Ryan (also a mod in the V section at the same time) who was known for locking threads left right and centre.

Edited by HOW'S ANNIE?

I have been replaying GTA IV for the Thanksgiving season, I feel like the game really captures that colder fall feeling well and Liberty City is a great city to visit right around the holidays
