Jason's Military Service (slightly) Analyzed

There's been a lot of discussion about Jason's military service, and a lot of less than quality discussion. Here is my attempt to throw in something useful.

I. What is a Ranger?

For those who don't know, non-Americans, or just don't care that much about the US Military, Rangers occupy the space of an elite infantry unit. Whether they are "Special Forces" is an argument that is many layers deep. For what its worth, they're often termed "Special Operations Forces", "Tier 2 (in contrast to something like the Delta Force)" "Elite Infantry", or "Special Enough for Pretty Much 95% of Operations Forces"

Rangers have a storied history in American military culture. The first mention of Rangers or "Ranging", that is going out into the hinterlands as a small infantry squad is attributed to John Smith who discussed doing so with some colonial Englishmen in the 1620s. The first Rangers as an infantry unit would crop up in the late 1600s, and reach much significance and fame during the American War of Independence for being able to operate deep behind Loyalist lines.

Rangers would continue to have a role throughout wars that the United States participated in, often taking gruesome casualties as a spearhead unit with no organic armor support. Multiple batallions were killed and captured in Italy, and the Rangers would participate in capturing a German cliff fort in Normandy, having to scale a vertical cliff face and taking horrendous losses to do so.

[Frankly, my palms are sweating just looking at a peaceful picture!]

In the Pacific, provision ranger units existed, including Merrill's Marauders, a long range penetration group in Burma and India commanded by one Gen. Frank Merrill. This particular unit, the 5307th Composite Unit, would become a parallel lineage to the rangers that would eventually be formally folded into their history for both lineage and prestige purposes. Merrill's unit started with around 1,000 men in 1943, and ended 1944 with barely 150 left standing, including Merrill himself, who survived a heart attack in the jungle.

[General Merrill might have looked like some bookish middle aged guy, but in actuality: wait he was? A graduate of West Point, MIT, and student of the Japanese Language]

During the Vietnam War, Rangers were reorganized as "Long Range Patrol" (LRP) units. This would mostly involve going deep into the jungle to either ambush or get ambushed by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army forces. The concept of a Ranger broadened, and these LRPs would make up a significant amount of American tactical fighting strength in Vietnam. The broadening even included National Guard units, which were traditionally ill-equipped compared to their active duty counter parts.

[Damn, I signed up to poke hippies with bayonets in Bloomington, not this Vietnam sh*t]

After Vietnam, the Rangers faced another re-organization into the unit they are today, the 75th Ranger Regiment (really, the regiment has existed since 1942, but its special troops capacity was only specifically tacked on in 2006), performing operations in Iran, Grenada, a parachute assault in Panama, Desert Storm, Somalia, as well as the litany of post-9/11 wars. Today, the regiment is the most used US combat unit, with at least some of its members having been continuously in a combat zone since 2001.

If Rockstar wanted to get loose with it, it should be noted that the 75th Ranger Regiment in Syria fought a pitched battle against Russian Mercenary Force "Wagner", of Prigozhin and attempted Coup fame in 2018. 1 Syrian Rebel was injured from tripping and falling. Untold members of the mercenaries died. Zero Americans were hurt or killed. This marks one of the few times that American soldiers have fought against mercs.

II. How do we know Jason is a Ranger?

Much like any military unit with a long history, the Rangers love pagentry. The "Ranger" tab, which will be discussed later, can be given to anybody who completes Ranger school. The scroll however, is only for those attached to the 75th Ranger Regiment.

[This scroll states "STACKIN BODIES SINCE 1620 AD"]

The eagle-eyed among you, or those reading regurgitated retrospectives, will notice that in one of the screenshots, Jason, our buff protagonist with a love of Latinas, Jay Ferguson, and beach houses, has a curious tattoo.

[See that scroll from earlier?]

Now some might be saying "JohnCGaming, that doesn't say Rangers! That says Marauders! You're full of sh*t!" Well, as true as that might be, remember Merrill's Marauders from a few inches up the page? Ding ding! With the scroll, the "Marauders" language, the parachute (the vast vast majority of rangers are airborne qualified), and the "tan" (in this case skin color) beret on the skull. Those assigned to the 75th Regiment get to wear a tan beret with their uniform.

[And, if you do some research, the Ranger's Beret flash is a composite of the unit insignia of one...Merrill's Marauders...!]

With all this in mind, Jason was clearly a member of the GTA Universe 75th Ranger Regiment.

III. What kind of training would Jason have?

To enter the 75th Ranger Regiment, you must pass the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program. For those who want to dive a little deeper, here is a wikipedia link. Jason, in addition to regular army basic training and MOS training, would have had to complete RASP. This is basically boot camp on steroids, with increased focus on breaching, squad-level tactics, and the like. Getting into the 75th gets you the scroll. Ranger School is open to most anyone in the army, and is a 62 day course that involves getting thrown in the woods, climbing rocks, shooting guns, getting thrown in the desert, unfortunate weather fatalities, and more.

[You should definitely tell someone with this tab that they're "not a real ranger" and see what happens!]

In addition to all the ranger specific training, and airborne parachute training, Jason would achieve additional specialty training for his Military Occupational Specialty. Jason would almost certainly be an 11B infantryman, or "door kicker" as they are affectionately called. I doubt Rockstar went with my ideas of how Jason should be trained.

IV. Why does this matter?

With this single tattoo, they have established Jason as one of the most lethally competent characters in the series. Niko might have been part of a militia in the Yugoslav Wars, Michael an experienced bank robber, and Trevor a bona fide crazy guy, but Jason is lethal. If he did a tour in the Middle East, like almost every single member of the Ranger Regiment would have had at the time Jason was in the military, he is probably completely unmatched in terms of personal combat skill.

V. You should try touching grass!

Thanks for reading, I will!

Jason Duval 05

[Note: This post will be updated as we learn more bits and bobs. I have a feeling being an army vet will be a relatively integral part of Jason's story, no matter how slim]

Agent Edward

Jason seems to be as dangerous as Niko, who I still consider the most dangerous GTA protagonist until we know more about Jason, due to the fact of him being a war veteran and being able to subdue a much bigger man than him with ease (Brucie).

Those cop motherf*ckers on Jason and Lucia's tail in both Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 are in for a treat once they get face to face against Jason in a gunfight.

Yes. Backstory of the GTA main character about how he got the ability of weapons. Probably he served in one of those Middle East conflicts. Syria, Iraq or Iran.

Arthur, John, Niko, Trevor and now Mr. Duval. :realisticsteak:

P.S. I know first 2 didnt serve but RDR's cowboy eras are kill or get killed, learning guns. That's how they survived.

Also.

Really great post, seriously informative and well put together.

I hadn’t made the connection between Jason’s tattoo and Merrill’s Marauders until now. The details about the scroll, the beret, and the airborne connection makes a strong case for him being part of the 75th Ranger Regiment. If that’s what Rockstar’s aiming for, it definitely adds depth to his character arc.

Compared to past protagonists like Niko or Trevor, Jason being a Ranger would make him one of the most tactically trained and combat-experienced characters we’ve ever had in GTA. It could really shape how he handles situations in the story mode.

Appreciate the effort you put into this, definitely contributes a lot to the GTA VI speculation.

I kinda wish Jason wasn't a ranger or anything glamorous/badass just because I've had enough special forces sh*t from other video games. He should be like 9 out of every 10 soldiers and just some grunt with a totally boring job like a water treatment specialist or a quartermaster

Also, consider the possible idea that, despite having the tattoo, Jason never was a ranger and just lied about it for clout i.e. these hoes:

It would be funny if despite it all his MOS was something like cook or behavioral health.
