As much as we despise some modder trying to sell modded account or someone spamming square boxes infinitely, in-game chat was very useful. Playing with some amateur who don't know what they are doing and cant direct them and continuously failing heists because of them choosing wrong decision, chat was convenient in those times. I sincerely hope they bring back the text-chat in enhanced. R* cant expect me to voice chat with some random players in full lobby. Till then, Legacy it is.

exactly. I don't care graphics improvement. I was fine earlier too. Also, they said quicker load but i don't see that happening.

Biggest reason why I never really got into RDR Online.

Please. The chat missing is not some "oh we forgot, put it on todo-list". This is not some indie game with half a dozen developers. This is a big ass game company and there's no way in hell that they just accidentally forgot text chat. Especially as they had omitted it already earlier from RDR2.

 

So the only way it might come back is that there's big enough fuzz about it, and they see the data that people care about it and do not play the "Enhanced" edition as much as R*/Take 2 wants.

 

Why they want to remove text chat I will not try to speculate about right now. But I am doing my own part by being mostly in the legacy version and bitching online like in this message.

Imagine a text chat DLC or a GTA+ exclusive that sets a new precedent for other companies to lock one of the most basic features of online PC gaming behind a paywall. :bruh:

If R* aims to integrate Discord Social SDK, this could explain the removal of text chat. It would give them time to make it work with Discord and perhaps develop a console version, allowing them to expand the integration to Gen9 consoles once Discord Social SDK supports them.

Thanks for sharing! I’m curious how it will handle session chat, since the examples only mention messaging friends or linking to a server channel.

This is the only mention of lobby chat I found and it feels out of Discord Social’s scope for what GTAO needs.

It certainly won't be for the whole session chat, but simply to chat with a friend on discord in-game. Like this:

If they do Linked Channels, R* can link their LFG channel on their discord for players hosting heists.

Rockstar opening a Discord server doesn't suddenly mean they're gonna use all of their tech tbh, I very much doubt that's coming to GTA V personally, as much as it would be cool. Rust atm is the only game that's publicly announced interest/that they're gonna do that.

What could go wrong, hinging your game chat on a third party service?

 

Personally, I don't see it coming back. Not too upset it's gone since it was mainly spam and hate speech crap in public sessions by modders on pc. And if I were to mute or block someone on pc, all they had to do was rejoin the session and I'd see their nonsense again in the chat.

 

What I'd rather see is a preset chat system (like rocket league) or the communication system in Portal 2. Could even allow users that speak different languages to communicate.

I'm not integrating my Discord into any game. That stuff stays separate and I only speak with people I know IRL. If anyone asks me in-game, I don't have Discord.

 

Public freeroam chat can go as far as I'm concerned. However, I NEED that stuff in heists with randoms. Preset messages won't cut it, and I mostly need to communicate with 3 other people at once, so phone texts are no good.

Good luck using preset messages to explain to a random that they need level 2 keycards on Silent&Sneaky, or that you are going to steal the helicopter from the roof of the police station, and following the GPS route is not a good idea.

I can handle moderated text chat no problem. I mean there's already a long list of words that get ****ed out. I just need something that is more effective than phone messages. 

(yes, in the mean time I have resorted to sending people phone texts during missions, I don't think anyone on PC uses or reads that)

All I need is the ability to use text chat in heists, or with my CEO/MC in freeroam. I don't really care about public freeroam chat, where it's indeed mostly irrelevant and sometimes toxic.

So it ain't coming back? Hmmm...I'm not switching then, game is content rich enough for me already, don't care about new gen stuff but in game text chat matters too much for me to switch.
