GTAV Enhanced: Stuttering Problems Thread - Report your issues here

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to give my 2 cents regarding this situation.
I haven't noticed stutters, I'm running it all maxed out, RT maxed and DLAA to push the resolution.
1440p 144Hz, V sync on, my system is: 4080, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 64GB RAM on an NVME.

Now, the only thing that I can think of that I have different from most is that I enabled Thread optimization in the nvidia control panel, is this a fix? No clue, but might as well try if Rockstar can't fix it entirely.

I haven't had time to test the new patch yet.

This new patch definitely seems performance related.

I got better 1% and 0.1% FPS but my framerate still seems odd.

Orange is the new patch. ReBAR has been forced on via NvProfileInspector using the RDR2 flags.

Managed to further narrow it down. No traffic removes these stutters, but also just being outside of the city does, and not just because there are less vehicle, even if its on a busy highway.

So it seems like theres something weird going on maybe with the NPC pathing in the city? it doesn't seem to matter too much how many vehicles there are, if its a little or a lot it still seems to stutter the same unless you're outside the city.

this is a separate issue but I thnk the weird frametime stuff occurs a bit above 130fps because of some audio engine limitation? so try limit it around that or just use the 120 cap

Same thing here — I configured the game to minimum or maximum settings, and the same problem happened. I think it’s an issue with the D3D12 cache. The problem is less noticeable when I cap the frame rate with RivaTuner.

I've tried updating Directstorage dlls, enabling/disabling HAGS and using SpecialK to disable Directstorage GPU decompression. Nothing helps, the only thing that gets rid of stutters is disabling traffic/peds. And it only happens in the city as The_Glitcher1705 said.

Has there been a new patch since the first one? I'm not seeing any updates available.

This one: https://steamdb.info/app/3240220/history/?changeid=27812995

Try to restart RGL/Steam/Epic if it doesn't show up. If you already have then it's all good!

Version is 811.14

Now that I've played some more, the stuttering is partly better and not. Traffic and world processing definitely seems to have a role, because when inside my e.g. Online Auto Shop, my frame times were even smoother than Legacy. Outside however, in both SP and a friends Online session, there's still lots of occasional stutter. I already had some of this on Legacy but it is a little worse now.

Today's patch did improve it regardless, it's less annoying, just probably needs further digging.

I get stuttering when I go above 120 FPS, which makes me think that could be why the lock was there in the first place.

Indeed. The game at its core has never behaved well over 120-130 FPS, it would require much deeper work to fix that and it was indeed why the lock was there. I'm guessing they reverted it due to community complaints, but it'll be at people's own risk because the game is unstable over those rates, and I personally fully expected people to start realising that very soon after they removed it  Mine is locked to 120.

Having the same issue on my rig: Ryzen 7 5700X3D, 32Gb 3200mhz RAM, RTX 2060 Super, 2Tb Gen4 Nvme SSD, Windows 11 24H2

Disabling traffic and peds in director mode eliminates the issue completely, so Rockstar clearly messed something up...

This is actually sad tbh, If it wasn't for this annoying stutter issue I would say this "Enhanced" version runs and looks much better than legacy... sh*t I can get mostly solid 60fps with RT on a RTX 2060 Super, a card that is useless for anything RT related in other games, so yeah impressive optimization if you ignore the stutter, hoping they can fix this.

I suspect this is DirectStorage related. AFAIK, it decompresses with the CPU and Enhanced streams in assets *constantly*. Legacy loaded areas in chunks which may have caused occasional frametime spikes.

I measured disk reads with a tool I made while driving through the city in both (weird title spacing is because I forgot to change the title so I blanked it afterwards):

Test setup:

Cleared standby ram before each test to make sure the game isn't loading assets from ram

Regular settings are maxed, no RT, no extended view range or shadow distance, DLAA/8x MSAA, 1440P

Framerates are 90-140

PC: 3900X, RTX 3080, 32GB 3600Mhz, Samsung 970 Plus (PCIe 3.0)

(I tried capping to 120fps but it didn't help)

Added detail

One thing I have noticed is that it seems certain scripted moments in story missions seems to trigger stutters consistently. I have been testing various settings on the mission Legal Trouble because I have found during the drive through the city I get some reliable stuttery moments, and during the airport scripted chase scene there are moments that stutter everytime without fail. The theory about NPC scripting seems to be onto something!

edit: Fixed name of mission

They need to fix the stutter issue and the audio mixing for the radio and this is the ultimate version of GTA V.

If i recall correctly, RDR2 had a similar issue and switching to vulkan would alleviate the stutters largely. Maybe using DXVK could prove worthwhile?

Just a side note i guess but the problems with micro stutters is it can play with our minds almost. It's hard to capture on video and theres alot of people's subjective experience that may or many not align with others. So that complicates thing further when it comes to solving the issue. Sometimes even good 1% lows that are close enough to averages dont paint the full picture.

GrandTheftSomeone

Just to be sure the stuttering isn't related to unlocking the frame rate: For me GTA 5 Enhanced is limited to 120 FPS and most of the time I get around 80 - 100 FPS with all RT options on high to very high + FSR enabled but there are still those occasional stutters, especially when driving fast through busy traffic. So it's not my system, right? (AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, 32 GB RAM, NVMe SSD)

AztecaEh

There was a massive stutterfest for me on one of the bunker delivery missions with lots of cops intercepting your way, it seems to have mostly went away afterwards, and covering a lot of distance at once with high speed vehicles like HSW cars tanks the fps

It is 99% related to traffic and AI processing, with yesterday's patch (haven't tested today's, won't be home until much later) I was getting silky smooth FPS inside certain interiors or the countryside, however, going to LS or getting the cops on me would immediately trigger it again.

Had a little play, stuttering is still there in the downtown area. At least patches are still coming in though!

Hopefully they are aware of it by now, it wouldn't surprise me if they aren't

I seem to be getting more stutters with today's patch. Very odd.

Alex from Digital Foundry has a history of being vocal about stuttering (especially with PC releases). Once the team covers Enhanced, hopefully he is able to replicate some of the issues we're having and call more attention towards them.

Are you sure you updated? I've been driving around through LS and it seems like there is SOME micro-stuttering left but my constant--large--stutters are basically gone.

On a side note, ray tracing in this game has given me some hopes for gta 6 performance. When I disable RT ultra, I go from about 100 to 130 fps. Although the RT reflections look very dithered, they have grown on me. And of course the global illumination and ambient occlusion look amazing. Any graphics programmers can explain how it is so performant considering how good it looks?

I'm currently in GTAO and both the BattleEye and Enhanced .exes were last modified this morning at 8:53 AM EST; I'm definitely on the latest version.

I think DLSS is causing the stuttering for me, switched to FSR 3 and it has been a lot better

I have set an FPS cap of 90 in riva tuner, everything max settings apart from extended shadows which it at 0 and Extended distance scaling is at 50 percent.

Would highly suggest anyone to try FSR to see if it helps them and also use an external frame limiter over the one in game

I don't think we'll need DF for this one. There's a few issues people have with the Enhanced versions and it's why the game currently has a Mixed (51%) rating on Steam. That always gets developer attention lol.

I've been getting the microstutters with and without Raytracing on.  I have a 7900x. 7900 XTX, 64GB Ram, and the game is on a dedicated nvme drive.  I saw the pedestrians and traffic item in here and I'm going to give that a try.  I  was on a mission heading back to Franklins house by Grove and it was stuttering real bad.  After saving it all went away.  Like I said, I'll try the pedestrians and traffic thing to see if it helps.
