Jimbatron
Introduction and Table of Contents This guide will show you how to get 100% on Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare, with all the achievements/trophies for the re-released versions (PC, PS5 and Switch, and single player items for older versions). It will also includes all the optional side quests and outfits, in effect, covering all the non-random content in the game (albeit unlike the base game, most are actually needed for 100% anyway). It does this by providing a specific route and order to each task required, so you can do it in an efficient and easy play through. This will combine tasks where it is easier to achieve them together. For example, in one mission, “Filth and Other Entertainment” Part II, it is possible to get Undead Hunter Challenge 3 unlocked easily, which is otherwise a real pain in free roam. The Explosvie Rifle Mastery Challenge 5 and the “Master Exploder” achievement/trophy are also easily obtained in “American Imperialism”. I find this is a much better way to go about 100% than having separate guides for each task. If for example, you complete the story mode missions, and then embark on the challenges, you’ll have to revisit places you’ve already been to, wasting time when tasks could have been done earlier, and missing opportunities missions give you to complete them with ease. It should be noted, that this isn’t a pure speed running guide. Speed running requires you rush, and do things like skipping cutscenes. This guide aims to maximise your immersion, and won’t rely on tricks that feel too out of place with the story, but it won’t have you waste time unnecessarily either. The guide is all about getting everything done without having to pull off anything too difficult, avoiding the most painful grinds and at a good pace that you will hopefully find enjoyable. There’s a full ordered route below (The Schedule) split into sections, so you can follow easily and keep track of your progress. I recommend you read through the Overall Requirements and Strategy Section too, before you start. Some items required for 100% and trophies are not guaranteed to crop up at the exact same time and place as they did for me in my run, so you will need to be constantly on the look out for some events. The guide is arranged into the following sections, please click on the links below to jump to each part: 1) Overall Requirements and Strategy 2) The Schedule 3) Summary and Acknowledgements Error spotting is welcome. This guide is large so it will be unlikely if a few small mistakes haven't crept in. Constructive comments that help fix issues will be added to the acknowledgements section. Please note that whilst I'm happy to hear and discuss alternative routes, I will probably not be able to make changes to the guide tables. This takes a long time, and if you make a change in one place it tends to have knock on consequences, some of which aren't always immediately obvious. Forum members may already be familiar with my Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 guides, so will have an idea what to expect. Links to them are below if you are new to these. Jimbatron
1) Overall Strategy Requirements for 100% The following items are needed for 100%. If you follow the guide's schedule in the sections below you will get 100%, so it isn’t essential to read this in full, but it will help you understand the rationale for the route taken and minimise the chance of you missing anything, as you will recognise the importance of (some seemingly inconsequential tasks) as you go. The guide colour codes the requirements into categories – Missions; Survivors; Challenges; Towns Saved; Cemeteries, Missing Persons; and Miscellaneous. The grouping is fairly arbitrary but just chosen so the type of task stands out a bit more. Missions All 7 Story Missions must be completed. The final one is “A Civilised Man” Survivors 6 Survivor side quests must be completed for 100%. Challenges The following four Challenge categories must be completed in full. Four Horses of the Apocalypse: Four Horses of the Apocalypse 1 to 4 Obtain one of the four Horse of the Apocalypse for each rank Four Horses of the Apocalypse 5 Kill one of each undead type (Fresh Undead, Bolter, Bruiser and Retcher) using Death’s special ability All four horses of the Apocalypse can be encountered in free roam. When they appear, you will get a notification tool tip that a mythical creature is in the area. A large blue circle will appear on your radar and it will be somewhere in this zone. You should stop what you are doing immediately when this happens, lasso and break the horse. Apart from them being needed for 100%, they are also vastly superior to other mounts – being extremely hard to kill (normal undead never seem to deal them any damage), and having stamina that never seems to run out. The first three Horses of the Apocalypse appear in specific states. Pestilence only appears in West Elizabeth, War only appears in New Austin, and Famine only appears in Nuevo Paraiso. Once you have broken all three of these, Death, the final Horse of the apocalypse may appear in any of these states. They can appear in many different locations (subject to the constraints mentioned above), but as far as I am aware, no one has provided definitive proof of what controls whether they spawn or not. My working theory is that they spawn as an alternative to random blue dot events that occur all over the map. These aren’t entirely random however as there seems to be a large number of fixed spawn points all over the map where they can occur, it is just random which specific event you get. If you encounter a blue dot random event, complete it, ride away for a couple of minutes, and then ride back, quite often another will appear in the exact same place. On a few occasions for me when doing this a Horse of the Apocalypse spawns right where a blue dot random event had previous been. In addition, they are definitely in the same part of the game script. So I’m feeling reasonably good about this hypothesis, but I’m not in a position to prove it just yet. Regardless, what we can definitely say is there is not one fixed location where a Horse of the Apocalypse will definitely appear. So whilst I show you in the guide where and when I found them, it may not be the exact same time and place for you in your run. These serve as a reminder about when to keep your eye out for them, and at least one place that may be worth checking if they don’t appear for you. It appears that Death has a much lower spawn probability than the others (which all appear pretty quickly with me entering each state (found on my travels without having to explicitly look). Death took me somewhere between 1-2 hours of searching to find, so this can get frustrating. It is therefore worth keeping in mind that you are given Death after completing the final mission. You may therefore opt to postpone Horses of the Apocalypse Rank 4 and 5 until after you have finished the story. This is definitely much easier, but I know some players prefer to hit 100% on story completion, so the guide is set out for players who wish to do so. Undead Hunter Challenges Undead Hunter 1: Kill 100 Fresh Undead and 25 Bolters. Reward: Ammo. Undead Hunter 2: Kill 25 more Bruisers and 15 more Retchers. Undead Hunter 3: Use a single explosion of a Retcher to kill two other Undead. Undead Hunter 4: Kill two Undead bears, five Undead wolves, and three Undead cougars using a torch. Undead Hunter 5: Find and kill the Chupacabra. It should be noted that the first two challenges require you to simply kill a large volume of Undead. The first in particular, you may not get at the exact same time as me – I unlocked rank 1 during the Survivor side quest “Dinner for Two” in Armadillo. However, I made an effort not to kill any Undead in my playthrough that were not in a video. When I encountered any going from A to B between recording, I rode past them. Therefore you should get it by reaching Armadillo, if not earlier, provided you kill all the Undead types that you see and need. Fresh Undead are the ones that look most like normal NPCs. Bolters move very quickly, typically on all fours. These won’t appear until you are in New Austin (with the exception of one at the end of the mission “Curious Tales from Blackwater”). Rank 2 requires you to kill Bruisers (the big fat ones) and Retchers (the ones with greenish tinged heads that spit poison). The Bruisers shouldn’t be much of a problem, you’ll get plenty saving towns and cleansing graveyards. The Retchers are more rare until you get down to Mexico. However, you want to get this before you complete Part II of “Filth and Other Entertainment” as that provides a golden opportunity to get rank 3. When you shoot a Retcher in the head it explodes causing damage to anything nearby. Undead Hunter 3 requires you to use such and explosion to kill two other undead at once. This is a real pain in free roam, as they typically won’t stand close enough to each other. However at the end of “Filth and Other Entertainment” Part II, a Retcher and a fresh Undead will be feasting on an unfortunate NPC. You can hogtie them both whilst they are busy with that, and then when the NPC reanimates as a zombie, hogtie him as well. Place them all together and headshot the Retcher. The fourth rank requires you to kill undead animals using your torch. Do this on horse back as if you are riding a horse of the Apocalypse it will provide you with a lot of protection. Just charge towards the animal, and once you get practiced at the timing of swinging your torch, it’s not that difficult. You do need to be aware though that the bears can hit you whilst on horse back if they are on slightly higher ground. So do the bears last, and save your game before attempting. If you die, you lose your progress. Undead Hunter 5 requires you to find and kill the Chupacabra. Like the horses of the Apocalypse, if it appears you will get a notification tool tip that a mythical creature is in the area. A large blue circle will appear on your radar and it will be somewhere in this zone. If you’re riding a Horse of the Apocalypse, it poses no threat to you, and you can easily kill it with a headshot. Note it only appears in Nuevo Paraiso after the first four Undead Hunter Challenges are complete. Therefore I set up the guide to ensure that is done before you enter Mexico, so there is more chance you will encounter it on your travels. Again, there is not one place or time that it appears, so you may not find it at exactly the same time as me. My theory as to how is works is that it’s the same as for the Horse of the Apocalypse – this may spawn as an alternative to a blue dot random event, when the challenge and location conditions are met. Undead Treasure Hunter Undead Treasure Hunter 1-5: Find a Treasure Before you can access this challenge, you must first find a map giving you the location to the first treasure (finding it will then unlock rank 1 and give you a new map to the next one). The map can be found at random blue dot events in the wilderness where there is a camp with a chest. An example is the doctor with a gatling gun who asks you to capture some live undead for him. If you help him, he’ll allow you to open the chest (if you open it without helping, he may attack you). If you run into one of these then take the opportunity to get the map. I show in my guide a way of finding it that seems to have a high spawn probability. After you have completed “Birth of the Conservation Movement” and saved Cochinay (as shown in the guide) returning to the Tanner’s Reach Cabin will likely spawn an event where a lady is shooting at undead outside. She warns you not to go in the cabin, which is full of more undead. Go in anyway, kill the Undead, and there will be a chest inside with the map in it – all as shown in the guide and linked video below. Once you’ve got the map, following the guide schedule below to find each treasure is easy. Undead Sharpshooter Undead Sharpshooter 1: Kill 5 undead in 10 seconds using a gun. Undead Sharpshooter 2: Headshot 10 undead in a row. Undead Sharpshooter 3: Kill 5 flaming undead in one dead eye meter Undead Sharpshooter 4: Kill one of each undead types in one dead eye meter Undead Sharpshooter 5: Get 5 undead sniper kills in 8 seconds (without using dead eye). Undead Sharpshooter 1 is relatively easy and I do this in Blackwater. Run around close to Undead so they start to chase you, and get others to do so until you have a group of five or more following. Then unleash Dead Eye. The others, I pick up specific parts of completing 100% where it’s easy to do these. Undead Sharpshooter 2 and 3 are suited to getting when saving Manzinita Post and Twin Rocks respectively. Undead Sharpshooter 4 and 5 are easy to get at El Presidio once you reach the location. Towns Saved You must save all the towns on the map at least once for 100%. Doing so is included in the schedule below for all of them Spoiler The towns in question are: Blackwater Manzanita Post Cochinay Pacific Union R.R. Camp Thieves' Landing MacFarlane's Ranch Armadillo Twin Rocks Gaptooth Breach Ridgewood Farm Rathskeller Fork Plainview Escalera Nosalida Tesoro Azul Chuparosa Las Hermanas Agave Viejo El Matadero Torquemada Note that Fort Mercer, Casa Madrugada, El Presidio start with a saved status, so no action is required for them. A given period after you have saved a town, it may come under attack again by the undead. Saving it again isn’t required for the 100% stat, but for the “Spinning Plates” achievement/trophy (see below) you must have all towns saved SIMULTANEOUSLY. Cemeteries You must cleanse the following cemeteries. Blackwater Graveyard Coot's Chapel Odd Fellow's Rest Tumbleweed Graveyard Sepulcro Each of these are included in the schedule. You can’t actually miss them however, as cleansing them all is required as part of story mode progress. Missing Persons At Fort Mercer and El Presidio, missing person posters appear, that act a bit like bounties in the base game, except here, if you take a poster you have to ride to a destination and rescue someone, brining them back to the safe zone. There are 10 to save in Fort Mercer and 6 in El Presidio. All are needed for 100%, and included in the schedule below. Unlike the bounty posters however, they aren’t limited to appearing at a certain time of day. Instead when you complete one, the next appears straight away. This makes it possible to farm them all in one go. However, the guide spreads them out a bit to make it less monotonous. Miscellaneous You must unlock all outifts in the game. However, there are only two that you won’t get automatically via completing the story, and out of those two, there is only one requirement that isn’t covered by all the 100% tasks above – and that is to find and Break the Unicorn The outfits you must actively unlock for 100% are: The Legend of the Apocalypse Outfit This is given you when you complete all the challenges, which we have covered above. No separate activity is required The Undead Hunter Outfit This is unlocked by completing the following tasks: Complete the Survivor Side Quest "Birth of the Conservation Movement'. Complete the Mission "Filth and Other Entertainment". Complete the Mission "Missing Souls". Return a Missing Person to El Presidio. Find and break the Unicorn As you can see, the first four are all covered by requirements we have listed above. The Unicorn is included in the guide, doing so also unlocks the achievement/trophy “Fan Service” as listed below. Achievements/Trophies As stated in the introduction, this guide isn’t just about getting 100%, but also all the other achievements/trophies/accomplishments (“awards) in the game. Before starting out planning to get these, it is worth grouping each award into one of three categories. Awards you will get from completing the story mode Awards you will get in the process of reaching the official 100% stat Awards that require additional action beyond what is needed for the 100% Awards that are shared the base Read Dead Redemption Game (some which you may have already Whilst I list them all in the guide schedule, if you are ticking of all the things required for 100%, the only awards you need to worry about separately are those that fall under 3 and 4. 1. Awards you will get from completing the story mode The Downward Spiral Complete the "Curious Tales from Blackwater" Mission. Judge A Man By The... Complete the "A Cure For Most of What Ails You" and "Get Back in that Hole, Partner" Missions. The Superior Dance Complete the "Mother Superior Blues" Mission. All's Right With the World Complete the "A Civilised Man" Mission. 2. Awards you will get in the process of reaching the official 100% stat Six Years In The Making Find and kill a sasquatch Chupathingy Find and kill a chupacabra. Mad Marston: The Trail Warrior Attain Rank 5 in all Undead Nightmare Challenges. Fan Service Find and break a unicorn. Zed's Dead, Baby Attain 100% Game Completion statistic in Undead Nightmare. 3. Awards that require additional action beyond what is needed for the 100% Spinning Plates Have every territory saved at the same time during the Undead Nightmare. This is the one you have to watch out for. After you’ve saved a town, it may come under attack again, and you’ll have to go back and save it if you want the award. Keep an eye out for tool tip notifications that a town has come under attack. If this happens, finish what you are doing and go back to save it again if you want this award. I show where I do this in the guide, but it may not happen for you at the exact same time. It will depend on how long you take to do tasks, and how much you advance time by saving manually by sleeping in a bed. 4. Awards that are shared the base Read Dead Redemption Game (some which you may have already) Awards in this section span across both the base RDR game, and Undead Nightmare. Some you might already have and don’t need to do again. If you’re starting out and planning to do both, I not if it’s substantially easier in Undead Nightmare to get them. Axe Master Complete all Tomahawk Challenges. Tomahawk 1 - Save Manzanita Post. Tomahawk 2 - Kill one enemy with a thrown tomahawk, one with a tomahawk melee, and one while on horseback. This can easily be started during “Birth of the Conservation Movement” and finished when saving Cohinay, as I show in the guide below Tomahawk 3 - Kill an Undead Bat with a tomahawk without using Dead Eye. I show how to get this at Beecher’s Hope. Tomahawk 4 - Kill five enemies in a row with the tomahawk without missing. Quite easily done when saving a town, I do this at Pacific Union Rail Road Camp Tomahawk 5 - Save a town using only the tomahawk. I do this when going back to save Blackwater after it is attack again (for the “Spinning Plates” award). It has the fewest enemies so it’s the easiest This is included in the schedule below. If you got it in the base game however, you can skip these if you wish. You won’t unlock the challenges if you do, but they aren’t required for 100%. Master Exploder Complete the Explosive Rifle Challenges. Explosive Rifle 1 – Save Rathskeller Fork Explosive Rifle 2 - Kill one of each Undead type with the Explosive Rifle Explosive Rifle 3 - Kill 3 Undead with one shot of the Explosive Rifle. I do this in the wilderness using Undead Bait to group them up. Explosive Rifle 4 - Kill 2 Undead animals with one shot. Easy to get in the wild when packs of wolves chase you. Explosive Rifle 5 - Kill 1 Undead while wearing the US Army Uniform. “American Imperialism” is the ideal time to get this, as you’ll be wearing the uniform as part of the story. This is included in the schedule below. If you got it in the base game however, you can skip these if you wish. You won’t unlock the challenges if you do, but they aren’t required for 100%. Mowing Them Down Kill 500 enemies with a mounted weapon in any game mode. How to farm this at El Presidio is included in the schedule below. It is much easier to get this here than in the base game. In a Hail of Bullets Kill 500 enemies with any pistol or revolver in any game mode. This is ongoing. Provided you use the revolver exclusively for combat (as I do in the video links), you’ll get this early on reaching Mexico (I got it whilst saving Chuparosa) Long Arm of Marston Kill 500 enemies with any rifle, repeater, or shotgun in any game mode. I got this in the base game, which makes sense and it’s more important to use long range weapons against opponents that have them too. It’s possible to get it here if you missed it, but it’s difficult to get both the Long Arm of Marston and In a Hail of Bullets in one of the base game or the expansion, due to the lack of enemies (unless you go on mass killing sprees in free roam). If by chance however you got In a Hail of Bullets and not the Long Arm of Marston in the original game, exclusively use repeaters and rifles in this run through. Bullseye Get 250 headshots in any game mode. I got this in the base game. If you didn’t get it there however, you almost certainly will here without specifically trying as you have to get headshots to kill Undead (body shots might work eventually but they can take so many you’ll run out of ammo in no time). The Gunslinger Score a headshot on any enemy using Expert targeting mode. I got this in the base game, but I would imagine you can get it here too. If you want to get it in Undead Nightmare, on the PC simply using the mouse will work fine and it’s very easy. If you are on the console and find it difficult, go into expert targeting mode on the Gatling gun at Rathskeller Fork, El Presidio or El Matadero and you should get it by luck just spraying bullets around. You now know everything you need to use the guide schedule and route in the sections below and fully complete the Undead Nightmare expansion for Read Dead Redemption. Jimbatron
2) The Schedule Part A – The Outbreak Hits West Elizabeth Marston is disturbed when Uncle returns one night, apparently with a mysterious infection that is passed to Abigail and Jack. After securing them at Beecher’s Hope, he travels to Blackwater in search of help, only to find a large part of the population is affected. Rumours send him out in search of old friends an colleagues who might have information on the cause and lead him to a cure. You should pick up Sharpshooter 1 and 2 whilst saving the first two towns, Blackwater and Manzinita Post respectively. Then head into the forest of Tall Trees to complete the “Birth of the Conversation Movement” side quest. All the while you are in West Elizabeth, look out for a mythical creature notification, which will be the Horse of the Apocalypse, Pestilence. It’s far superior to a normal horse, so you want to acquire it straight away, and you need it for 100% regardless. After saving Cochinay, return to Tanner’s Reach, picking violet snow drops as you go (we’ll need them later for crafting) and you should get an event where the cabin is full of Undead. Open the door and dispense with them to find the treasure map inside. Complete the optional Tomahawk Challenges if you want to, collect some Prairie Poppy (also needed later for crafting), and then head down to save Thieves’ Landing after you’ve liberated the Pacific Union Rail Road Camp. Seth suggests that he should clear the graveyards out, which he starts to do on the way to Fort Mercer. After saving Thieves’ Landing, head down the Old Baccus Place to meet Seth for a cutscene only encounter that will trigger the quest to clear the graveyards out (but you don’t need to do these immediately, we will cover them off when they are close and convenient. Then pick some wild feverfew when you are heading towards MacFarlane’s Ranch. Whilst you do this, keep an eye our for the Horse of the Apocalypse War appearing. It may not turn up at the same time as it did for me, so you’ll need to be alert and on the look out for it the entire time you are in New Austin until you find it. Round about the time you save MacFarlane’s Ranch (or maybe later if you’re playing quicker than me), it’s likely Blackwater will come under attack again. If you want to get the “Spinning Plates” achievement/trophy, head back to save it again as soon as you finish what you are doing. Using fast travel from a bed in a saved town is worth doing to reduce your travel time in real terms. Saved towns coming under attack will now be a periodic event. It may not happen at the same time as me in the guide, but I illustrate the points it did for me in the schedule so you know it should be about to happen. As well as saving MacFarlane’s Ranch and Armadillo, plus a survivor side quest in each, make sure you get the two treasures noted below and cleanse Coots Chappel. You should also have completed Undead Hunter Challenge 1 by the end of this section. If you are not, find more Fresh Undead and Bolters in the wild to kill until it unlocks. Whilst his new tonic doesn’t work as intended, he actually provides some useful inventions for once. Martson continues to clear the graveyards on Seth’s advice, and recues missing people by returning them to the fort. After meeting with West Dickens, head west to save Gaptooth Breach, and pick the Desert Sage he needs. On completing his quests, we’ll get the Blunderbuss. You don’t need headshots with this, as it will explode anything it hits. I recommend reserving this for when your Dead Eye is low. Searching Undead corpses will provide body parts which can be used to craft more ammunition. However, Undead killed with the Blunderbuss don’t leave and body parts for ammo, so if you use it exclusively, you’ll run out quickly. Therefore it is good to switch between this and your revolver. You can then start the missing persons quests at Fort Mercer, and cleanse the remaining graveyards in the state, whilst saving all the remaining towns, heading to Plainview last for the start of Part D. After the cutscene only encounter of “Filth and Other Entertainment” Part I, you’ll be requested to return with a live Retcher. Once you do so, you’ll have a good opportunity to get Undead Hunter Challenge 3, where you kill two more Undead with the explosion caused by shooting a Retcher in the head. Before you do that, you obviously need to unlock rank 2 of the challenge. Therefore the guide will have you kill the remaining Retchers you need to complete this first. Whilst you’re doing that, finish the remaining missing persons. Afterwards, complete Undead Hunter Challenge 4. Part E – Crossing the Border Marston acquires an army uniform and heads down to Mexico where the plague is rumoured to have begun. At Las Hermanas, he encounters Mother Superior Calderon who gives him hope that it may be possible to cure the plague. He also finds another old friend has quite single handedly kept a local town safe Now Mexico is accessible, you can save the remaining towns. The guide prioritises this so the “Spinning Plates” achievement/trophy can be unlocked as soon as possible. In addition whilst you are roaming the wild, keep an eye out for mythical creature notifications. This could be either Famine (the third Horse of the Apocalypse you need) or the Chupacabra (which you need to kill for Undead Hunter Challenge 5 and unlocks the “Chupathingy” achievement/trophy). Part F – All’s Right With the World Marston hears at Las Hermanas that Reyes may have been responsible. He suddenly realises that he’s been seeing the same strange but non-descript women across all his travels. Upon meeting her again in Escalera, she seems to know what caused the plague, and how to put things right. It’s time to tie up all the lose ends. Save all the missing people at El Presidio. Whilst you are there you finish the remaining Undead Sharp Shooter challenges, and get the “Mowing Them Down” achievement/trophy as shown below. You’ll also need to complete the final treasure hunting challenges, and the remaining missions The big question is whether you want to hunt in the wild for the final horse of the Apocalypse, Death. As mentioned above, he can spawn at various places all over the map. I show where I find him, but it may not spawn in the same place for you. Alternatively, you get given Death at the end of the story. So you may chose to postpone Horses of the Apocalypse Challenge 4 and 5, and breaking the Unicorn until after the story. This, to he honest, is much easier. However, I show Death can be found in the wild, for players who wish to reach 100% as they finish the story. Jimbatron
3) Summary and Acknowledgements Hopefully this guide will provide a useful resource for players looking to complete all of the content in Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare. I have done a complete play-through following when constructing the guide to confirm everything is possible to do in the order of the schedule shown. However, it's not impossible I may have missed some items. Feedback, constructive criticism, suggestions and error spotting in the comments below are welcome, and will be added to the acknowledgements below where appropriate. Happy gaming and best of luck on your quest to complete the game to 100% and beyond. With thanks to @Spider-Vice for help with setting up the topics and with HTML tables (advice for previous guides that has been re-applied here). HuntressGaming@YouTube for error spotting and suggestions This guide was put together based on how I used to run 100% back in the day on the PS3. Some of that was based from tips I learned off the internet, but I can't for the life of me remember the people who originally found various facts about the game from over a decade ago though! If you know an original author for a method used here, please let me know and I will credit any verifiable historical source.
