Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

Today marks GTA V's 7th anniversary since release! 2012 and 2013 were wild years on these forums, and for an upcoming article on our own GTANet.com, we'd like to know what were your favourite memories of the game, or its pre-release period here on the forums. We had thread simulators, trolls, droughts between announcements, crying and criticism, hype and positive vibes, and, of course, all of the in-game moments that we have had since then. Please share your testimonies below, as there's a chance you'll be included in our ~special anniversary article

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

I'll tell you what, R* know how to make a trailer. No sooner had the first trailer launched, I poured over it, watched it endlessly just taking in the atmosphere. It's easy to take for granted now, but for that generation of consoles we hadn't yet seen anywhere even remotely bright and warm in the Grand Theft Auto universe. From the drab and dismal Liberty to the sun kissed and vibrant Los Santos, it was like taking a vacation just watching the damn thing. I remember completing the first mission and immediately taking off into the hills, ignoring every prompt of help and every text message. I went from one end of the map to the other. I wish I could go back and play it all over again for the first time.

    GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 4]

I respect your opinion completely and I get where you're coming from, but let's be real here for a second. GTA as a series is something out of this world video game wise. The thing set itself in stone for the ultimate sandbox experience and people know this and most importantly Rockstar knows this. Kids that are younger than GTA IV is, are playing GTA V non-stop, their parents that grew up on GTA III and Vice City are playing GTA V and so on... When they announce the next GTA instalment the video game world is gonna blow up basically. Of course we have to take in consideration that Rockstar has a lot on their shoulders, but then again they have the manpower and the money to carry that burden with ease. Everything is always changing, but brands are brands. Nike sells their Air Max 90's since, well the 90's, people still buy them like hotcakes, because it's Nike and that's that. Rockstar has their GTA as a brand and they are going to milk it until the cows come home. Long time fans know that the formula is stale, although some may not admit it, but still. The only thing that matters is that the game sells and it will. I personally don't care anymore. I see that they're pushing the Online stuff, which I don't like, but it makes perfect sense and it's the only logical thing to do in the current video game industry, so GTA VI can be great and I'll be happy, it can be bad and I won't be disappointed, they made classics that I pick up more than I do their current games and that's enough for me.

    GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 4]

Reading some of the journalism that's going out right now about today's PS5 reel, it seems pretty clear that GTA or Rockstar or even Take Two isn't anywhere on the radar. It's all yesterday's news, to be generous. Here in this forum we live in a GTA bubble, but out there in the rest of the world everyone is moving on. For sure, when Six is announced it will make waves, but I can't help but go back to a strong sense that the whole GTA brand is getting very old very quickly. Competitors imitate and then innovate, and when Six eventually gets announced it might just be viewed as the update to that retro thing that was big almost a decade ago. So many massive opportunities have been squandered by Rockstar this year and that will set the pace for years to come. And I say that as a fan...

Things you do that nobody else does in RDO.

I love horses with a passion, and when I say that, I mean that I have equine everything from books, tattoos, a 500+ model horse collection, etc. And also a husband who hates the sight of horses now. Basically, if I could I would hang out in a pasture with horses all day. Yet even I will shoot a horse out from beneath it's owner if I have to. Not that I don't feel bad about it later, and if it is still alive I will revive it, but as far as I'm concerned it's an easier target and dropping it will handicap the rider for just the time I need to strike. Did I mention I love horses.

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

wow i forgot that it was gta 5s birthday. honestly i hate to say this but i have lost a lot of interest in this game lately. with the whole milking gta online. and no singleplayer dlc. i dont play it as much as i used to. but i will share some memories of the good old days. back when we were all excited for this game. so back when it was announced. i came home from a hard day of school. i got on the computer and went to the newswire. back then every day i always checked the newswire. so when i got to the site i saw the grand theft auto logo. but was confused what it was. i did not see the five yet. and then i thought to scroll down. and boom. i saw the logo and just jumped up and down like a little kid. i was in high school at the time. i was shouting and super hyped. i even woke my dad up to tell him the good news. even though he does not play video games. so fast forward to the trailer day. i was at school so hyped to see the first footage of our new gta. i was in lunch when it came out. and it came on when the next period started. i was in the library and decided i was going to watch the trailer before going to class. sadly i did not have any audio. but i still remember that feeling when i saw the opening screen. to the beach scene. and in that moment it almost felt unreal. like it was just a dream. i could not believe that this was it. so i watched the trailer and was amazed at the graphics and stuff they showed off. when i got home i actually watched the trailer with real audio. it was very exciting. then the droughts came. those were some painful times. i remember every day checking the newswire. just hoping for even the smallest detail about the game. there was one thing that helped. there was a series of videos called gta 5 screenshot fun. where this guy took memes and funny photoshopped screenshots from the screenshot fun page here. and compiled them into a video with some catchy music. it was awesome. and i still watch those videos to this day. and i visited this forum for a while. it was fun to read the theories and wishlists. i also remember this great fan fic someone made. about albert de silva. and they wrote their idea for the story. it was so good i just wish i could read it again. but i have not been able to find it. even though it was from this forum. so eventually we finally got our first two screenshots. we all know which ones im talking about. the helicopter picture with the sunset. and the mirror park lake picture. and even though they did not have anything super amazing in them. i was still just blown away by the sunset and the details. and then a few months later we finally got some real info. more screenshots. a trailer the reveal of multiple protagonists and who they were. so much more. sadly the game kept getting delayed and we had more info droughts. then when it was getting close to the release. we had so much info and i finally joined this forum. i wanted to share my thoughts and opinions on the game. and it was a cool experience. i had never been a part of a forum before. then the leaked gameplay started coming out. so when the leaked gameplay came out. it was so fun to watch. even with the low quality of the video. it was still cool to watch more gameplay. i would often rewatch the same old videos or same missions. then after a week or so of the leaked gameplay. we finally got to have this game in our hands. i went to the midnight release. and i got the collectors edition. i got home and downloaded the game. i did the first few missions. then i decided to free roam. after a few hours of playing it i went to sleep. when i woke up it hit me. i have gta 5. so i rushed out of bed to get back in my seat. and played all day. eventually after enjoying this game and beating the story. the multiplayer came out. and was a fun experience. at the time gta online was a new thing so it was so unique and different from the other multiplayers i played. this was back when i had friends to play with so we had so much fun screwing around and trying all the new stuff. and then beach bum came out. and i remember being hyped for it. because it was so nice to have something new to look forward to. fast forward to 2016. and the game had gotten stale. sure we had some cool dlcs for gta online. but we did not have any singleplayer dlcs. even though rockstar said we would. and after three years of waiting. we finally got an announcement of a new rockstar game. red dead redemption 2. now i know this thread is about gta 5 not rdr2. but playing gta 5 helped get my hype for rdr2. even during info droughts. it was cool to jump on gta online and join a car meet. or do races or adversary modes. even when we got the double action revolver and the hatchet. it was so cool using a gun that would be in rdr2. and here we are now. in 2020. rdr2 has been out for almost two years. and gta 5 is now seven. its crazy how time flies. last year we moved from our condo to the house we have now. and we had lived in that condo for almost ten years. so even though i was excited to move. i was sad to leave the place where i found out about gta 5. and where i played it for the first time. and all the other gaming memories i had there. gta 5 is a great game. but its sad what rockstar did to it. i just wish they could let it die. and give us new games like gta 6. or bully 2. something other than a seven year old game.

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

I remember I was like, 14 when GTA V was announced. I couldn’t contain my excitement while waiting. I scoured and scavenged for every piece of media or information regarding the game I could find. The preorder viewfinders, the cardboard cutouts from game stop. I remember when the franklin and chop artwork leaked and people were arguing and saying it was fake because they wouldn’t have animals in gta v especially not dogs lol and that the art style “didn’t look like rockstar’s() I even remember later on when they started updating the website for V with all new screenshots and samples from the ingame radios! I sold weed that summer to get the money to get the collectors edition, the limited edition hardback cover strategy guide (with laminated lithograph ) and any other pre order incentives I could get. I even went to GameStop and asked them for their in store cardboard posters. I still have the one of the Bikini lady throwing the peace sign. When the midnight launch happened, I was only 16 at the time so I had asked the girl at the GameStop what I should do. She stepped outside to get a smoke in and she handed me her ID and said when we get back inside just flash her the ID so the camera picks up that She checked my ID. Upon leaving, everybody was looking at me In envy as I left with my huge big box of V gear. It was way too much to even Carry. My friends gave me a ride there and a ride home and I cried on the way home. The wait was finally over! I booted up the game in my PS3, with a whole HD monitor and surround sound system I had set up. I really put in a lot of work to making this experience as perfect as possible. I started the game as anyone knows, in north Yankton. I don’t remember that part being too memorable, BUT, my first jaw dropping moment was seeing Franklins buffalo in the first mission, and the pop up display text saying something along the lines of “each character has their own personal vehicle” I couldn’t believe it! None of the other games before had done anything like this. It’s not a revolutionary concept now but at the time I was AMAZED. The music, the missions, the culture. I was so immersed in my first few hours of the experience. I skipped school the next day and played to my hearts content. i don’t think I’ll ever have an experience with a game like that ever again. also I was a Virgin when V was announced and now I’m a father so,

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

In my experience, the best memories were all from pre release. Beginning with the GTA V Leak Topic, the first real leak we had for GTA V was what finally got me to sign up here, after around 5 or 6 years of lurking. Then there were the dumb arguments and constant posts about features people wanted in the game, etc. Yes, even the great drought of 2012 I look back on fondly. It's like not eating all day before going out for a meal. Makes it that much more satisfying when you get something. I really loved the Mapping Los Santos thread! I always wanted to join in, but I never quite had the skills to help. I couldn't photoshop maps or anything like that. And there were so many of us, anything I'd spotted had already been noticed by others. But it was great to follow! The highlight of my week was waiting for GTA V o'Clock every Wednesday, at 5pm. It wasn't always a great show, as there were many weeks when there was no new news. But they always had a good show. A personal favourite was the episode where they compiled a playlist of the best tracks in GTA history! Spotify link I think in the end, GTA V may have been overhyped. As it felt like the biggest game we'd ever seen, but many of us beat it in a week. I wasn't disappointed, but spending 2 years looking forward to a game, only to beat it in 7 days... It made me realize that the best time in the GTA cycle, is the year leading up to release. You have everything ahead of you. Screenshots to pour over. Trailers to watch on loop. Characters to speculate about. Soundtracks and songs to discover. "What's on top of that mountain!!??" It's all so amazing when you're eager to play, but you can't. I was at the midnight release at my local Game store. I couldn't believe it was finally happening. After almost 2 years I was hours away from playing it! I miss the GTAForums Thread simulators. But I'm not sure they'd be possible, today. Maybe a bit too 'toxic'. Some of the things said probably wouldn't fly today. But sh*t was crazy back then! I did beat Lazlow in a boat race, during one of the early GTA Online streams in late 2013. So that's a truly proud moment. If anyone has an archive of old Rockstar streams, I'd love to watch it again! And a special mention to that time I came pretty close to predicting the GTA V box art, in November 2012! Here's to a repeat of this for GTA VI, with the knowledge gained from GTA V Happy 7th Birthday, GTA V!

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

I can't beleive the game released seven years ago... only seemed like a few years ago. So yeah, GTA V brought a lot of good memories. It was kind most of my childhood and I also learnt a lot of things from it especially in terms of modding and learning aspects of how the game works. Not only it helped me learn lots of things but it's kind of how I am a huge RDR and Rockstar enthusiast today. GTA Online on Xbox 360 with a few mates was one my favourite memories. We used to play the Heist's and Team Deathmatch for hours a day. And until the next-gen versions released, I kind of quit GTA Online and started playing more single player with mods on PC. I also remember playing the single player on day one just being shocked how well North Yankton looked and being introduced into this massive open world of Los Santos during the campaign intro, I explored LS for hours a day. It was so detailed back then and amazing how well Rockstar put together that huge world so well.

Reading all the big plans they had for the Single Player DLC, how each one was going to be unique, etc, only for GTA Online to launch and Leslie Benzies to get fired completely changing the direction they took with the series.

How f*cking ridiculous is it that we can now pre order next gen consoles, they'll be in our hands in 2 months time and yet R* still haven't clarified what's going to happen with regards to RDO come November. All anyone really wants to know is will there be next gen servers at launch and will our characters transfer, that's it. If either or both of those things aren't happening the backlash will hit in November anyway, so why not let the players know, unlike the shady no character transfer to PC bullsh*t they pulled.

    GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 4]

I respectfully disagree with some of your points. Let me elaborate; First of all companies such as: Nike, Apple, Rockstar and many more (pointed out those three because clothes/sneakers, games, tech) are selling the brand first and the product second. Why I say that? Well because if you like the brand you're going to buy more of it, if you like the product you're not necessarily looking to buy the other products of the brand. That's not worthwhile for the company. So what am I getting on with this? If you have fans of the brand, releasing something 'bad' per se doesn't mean you're going to lose fans. Apple, Rockstar and others could release a bad product and nobody will bat an eye. They won't feel anything, because people will buy it. This all connects with GTA VI, if the game focuses on Online (like it probably will) single player fans will be unhappy. Does that mean that they won't buy the game? Hell no, I know when the info starts happening and the hype is real, people will buy GTA VI massively and we'll forget about the issues we've been talking about. So, the game comes out and we buy it and Rockstar is happy. I said that if the game is bad I won't be disappointed, but I'll still buy and play it because I want to make my own judgement and not get it through the internet. I won't boycott it or jump the hate train because I'm still a fan of the of the series (*cough* brand *cough*) and I want to see what they've done with it. However I know for sure I won't be spending a dime on microtransactions. Many kids and people who like the game will though and the money starts rolling in again. Rince and repeat. Nothing bad or immoral about it, it's just business.

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

Best memories huh? Mine starts with the pre-release and speculation. How did I get into GTA V? It began with this thread in particular, named Genesis. Old timers here will remember it. Those thousands of posts, fan theories and what not. The several renames, jokes were amazing. GTAF Staff played quite a great part in it. Does anyone here remember the Bieber Challenge? Those were good days. Lurking around E3 annoucement wishing for good news, only to end up with Justin Bieber pips, avatars and broken signatures as well. What changed everything was this, only a logo on the R* website. It was green and clearly meant a lot of things. People made theories about what the green could represent (almighty dollar and what not). The latest rumors surrounding the long-expected GTA V had just swirled in June. November 2nd it was, a promise of a trailer and it indeed rocked every GTA Fan's world. Within minutes of the trailer release, people had started signing up and huge traffic here was crazy, something that wasn't seen in a while. Ref: Trailer #1 Analysis. The very words "Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather" a set of cyptic clues and excitement that would spark many later discoveries and what not. The Small Faces gained fame overnight I guess. The track was everywhere, like age old jubilation finally unfurling. What got everyone was interested was how the Map would be. Ofcourse it wasn't a small task or feat. Gifbrah started this thread called Mapping Los Santos and thousands of users joined in, stuck to map out areas. If you take a look at the OP, the pre-release map covers most of the accurate GTA V Map. What did it mean? Endless possibilities ofcourse. There were Neighbourhood Guide Mapping, Vehicles, Release Date guess and the best find has certainly to be this one: Ned Luke as the actor for Michael. Never was a voice actor so sought after before. Special mention to: Chillad Mural thread and Beta Hunt threads. Apparently the UFO threads were not that dumb after all. Kudos to the amount of the effort people put into speculating about Spaceship parts. Never did anyone expect aliens to appear in drug ingested state to a character. The Character's Intro trailer (multiple protagonists) set the forum discussions on fire with a chain of opinions as to why Rockstar would do it. And for some people, the image below was enough: And now, I never pre-ordered the game. But I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a PS3 copy 7 to 8 days after the game. I finished the Heist, completed Franklin & Lamar, got into Frank's Buffalo and head out to explore the huge map. The graphics were nothing like I had ever seen. Coming from GTA IV, it seemed all bright. amazing and sunny. Never read any of those pop-ups or text help boxes. The only thing I cared about was the graphics. Snapmatics changed the way we clicked pics. Got lots of fond memories, clicking out pictures with random people I met on GTA Online. Another fond memory being the GTAForums V2 upgrade, which was much speculated for years. The forum was out on a cached copy inorder to be upgraded for the incoming GTA V traffic to handle the discussions everywhere without hitting the old IPB 1.3 forum offline, which was literally put together on duct tape for years now. People who joined after that must not even know about it. Feels like another lifetime on this board. In a way, it was. Hats off to all the staff who were promoted during then to combat & cover the GTA V traffic. I used to watch the trailer on loop, waiting to see what had changed from their pre-release development & beta days. It got me thinking, what next? That was the first time I logged into GTA Online. On a PS3. Wasn't a huge fan of consoles before GTA V. I was like "what gives?" Might was well give this a shot. It was the best decision I ever made. I meet some of the best people online from GTAO and on this forum (shoutout to you guys; The Bandidos, Toni B, Beck. Gringo, Llama and DragonJack). Rooftop rumble grinding was a thing. Made a sh*t ton of money in it. Then come the days of abusing glitches, only to have R* taking away the profits and properties. And f*ck console modders as usual. They kept hitting the server offline. The servers weren't as stable as they are not, not being backed by shark cards & huge microtransactions in initial days. "Happiness was being able to cruise around friends throughout Los Santos and Blaine County, without having some random kid blow you up". Circa late 2014, I enrolled into an Uni and said goodbye to the GTA Online/V department on console. What brought me back in 2015 was the PC anticipation. I was the first on the forum to grab the System Requirements. I remember making a thread to help people who were curious if their specs could run GTA V, The struggle to run the Enhanced Version was real, since the changes on PS4/XB1 were magnanimous. Try running GTA V on a Core 2 Quad, 4GB DDR2 Ram, a GT 710 2GB, hoping that it would lock to 30FPS on 800x600 resolution (#3rdworldproblems). My roommate at the Uni got a FX-6100 and a GTX 760, thus helping me begin my modding journey on GTA V which was previously bottlenecked my age old PC. Ref: GTA V System Requirements & FAQ Thread I also met the guys at VeloceFacade (previously Facade Corp & RBE). Shoutout to you guys as well. I've known you guys for half a decade now. Cry about it. Also, #Pegasus & #Pegasusaintapersonalvehicle. These guys would eventually become my family/crew here on GTAF in any sorts of discussions. Anyone fancy a new phone? Also this, throwback to when me and Ciaran bashed the Armoured Kuruma for that ugly looking spoiler. Let the good lady eat. Years passed by, time flew by and I eventually stopped playing GTAO and never kept up with all the updates and changes. Independence Day was the last ever update I had on the PC version, eventually laying the game to rest for good and ending up with a severely outdated copy from 2016. I finished university in 2019, hoping to get back in GTA Online someday, eventually. It wasn't until the Epic Games launch I thought of getting back into the game. The user Blaze here started helping me out with PC builds and here I am. Starting over on a new RSGC account, ocassionally playing and at 60 Rank I guess. To wrap this up, tie it with a bow, whatever. GTA V memories for me was all about this forum, the discussion, the fun, memories, making new friends, meeting people. It's all a part of the process when you are actively involved with a game that has an entire online dicussion board dedicated to it.

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

The first day playing this game. No feeling comes close to it. After months of hype(no game's advertisements have got me that hyped to this date) and watching some of the best trailers for a game ever everyday, I finally got a chance to play it. The artworks passing by with that weird loading music while the game was being installed, setting my sights on LS for the first time, those atmospheric first few missions with a vibe of summer. Damn. It was truly incredible at the time. That feeling when you can switch between the 3 in free roam for the first time was amazing as well. My 2nd favorite GTA. Happy birthday.

Can't believe it's been 7 years already. Remember when Grand Theft Auto was an annual release?

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

I remember seeing all of the screenshots and being mesmerized by the vistas, most notably the viewfinder images, something about them still amazes me to this day, i fondly remember seeing them and wondering what the map was going to be like, needless to say that the wait was painful to say the least, specially during 2012, when R* said that they're were going to delay it to the following year. Another one of my many memories revolving the early GTA V days were the "Mapping Los Santos", "Chiliad Mystery" (and it's many threads) and "GTA V Beta Hunt" threads, although i only registered recently, i lurked those threads on a daily basis to check for new information and i also won't forget the whole "2405 house" fiasco that went down on this Forum.

Your best GTA V memories - 7th Anniversary

People discovering the band Queen... like they hadn't been around for 40 years already. Best memory...honest to goodness memory has to do with GTAO and my wife. She doesn't play but was my biggest cheerleader for online racing. I once came in second place after a very heated and close race. She yelled "I can't believe I lost that race". I had to remind her that she wasn't actually racing. Yup, she gets that caught up when back seat gaming.

Things you do that nobody else does in RDO.

Also funny to watch them fly over the head of the horse. Some of them are very good gymnasts. My wife is the same about horses. She gives me an evil look when I shoot one. I actually try not to shoot any when she's around. I don't need a visit from the SPCA or a trip to divorce court.

    What's wrong with the lobbies?

I find it INCREDIBLY RARE to even SEE another player (as a blue dot, on the map), even if in a lobby with as many as six of them; so it is no longer really a concern for me at all. If I do, it actually makes me happy and I tip my hat at them The times I have (seen another blue dot at all) , we were both just out riding our horses wherever, rather than engaged in a delivery or something. Then I make it a point to holster my weapon, then tip my hat. I think griefer types are probably not in such lobbys; they'd probably not bother to be in a lobby with only a couple of people, if they were really wanting to grief/bother people.

    What ruined online for you?

A lot of the new players seem genuinely surprised when you remind them that the game is nigh on seven years old. I am sure they think it is new because it is new to them.

I think that nothing will happen today either. They did not do anything for the other aniverseries of gta 5 or any of the other games. The coroporate R* does not give a f*ck about that stuff. They only care about one thing, cold hard cash. The devs may or may not care at this point, but they are not the ones making decisions.

RDO Next Updates Speculation & General Chat (Part I)

It's not like RDR2 really needs a remaster, to be honest, it looks phenomenal already on PS4 Pro. What we are really waiting on is R* announcing things like RDO character transfer, and whether RDO will even be playable at all on next gen at launch.

    GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 4]

I agree Sorry to inject sports into this lol. But this is Rockstar right now all bark no bite. They're letting the rest of the industry walk into their yard and take their ball, while they wag their tail and even let them pet them.

    GTA 6 Speculation & Discussion [Part 4]

It is, but I think it's also realism. It's not a reality I or anyone here wants, but there's a definite sense that games and even the culture that surrounds it is moving on in the real world. To be objective there's definitely a solid direction of travel in next-gen gaming, a trend, and then when we look back at Rockstar and even Take Two there's a sort of detached sense of inertia - or at best mediocrity.

    The B*tch & Moan Thread (Part 3)

For f*ck sake Rockstar. I have done a Gunrunning sale mission 4 times now, and I've still yet to be paid for any of them because of your sh*tty servers that work so well when I'm not making money. Why do you make it so hard for us legit players? It's like you're begging people to glitch or mod your game for all the wasted hard work...

    The GTA V beta hunt

Here's some news about my progress on the beta GFX ! Here is the first result of my re-creation of the round minimap, I hope to be able to present a fully functional version before the end of the month. Don't pay attention to the scenery, this is the mapping of my GTA Zombies project. Here is the first version of my work that I presented in July to my community for comparison.

    What ruined online for you?

I think that many people think very high rank = cheater/modder/glitcher. And because they're afraid of that person ruining their experience by cheating, they kick them.
