Gosh, I think I may have had enough tonight.
I'm an older player and maybe I'm just thin skinned. But I don't feel it's within the spirit of the game to call me "nigga bitch" when shot down over and over by a better player.
In the abusers defense, I'm admittedly not at all good and shoot under 35% for accuracy. But for a player to take it beyond just shooting my character or running him down in the street seems a little extreme. Like calling the home of the six year-old you dunked on, on your neighbor's adjustable rim, just to get one last thrill by humiliating him again.
In fact, some of the things being said in these "game rooms" would never be allowed in any other forum. I can't help but wonder if Rockstar has simply taken this game to the point where they're enabling player on player abuse in the name of "fun" and for the sake of making a couple of bucks.
Granted, the game is called Grand Theft Auto and there's bound to be some skinned knees. But when I get multiple messages via the PSN from a guy that just sniped me ten times, telling me "u fuking suck lol " it ceases to be fun and takes on an air of metered bullying. Even if that guy can't spell, or punctuate, or write a complete sentence, here I am, mortified. I look over at my sweet, sleeping little eight month old daughter and think "Gosh... Do I suck? And am I, a white, half Jewish, lower middle-class American, a "nigga bitch?" And if I am, in today's supposedly post-racial society, is that necessarily a bad thing? I'm fairly certain these young men are using it as a derogatory term and when it becomes clear that this is the pattern for this game's demographic, I think it's time for me to step aside, making room on the server for someone more eager to be rotten just for the sake of rottenness.
Why doesn't this happen in chess? Are the participants more cultured? More civilized? Do they just have more self control? Or are they scribbling notes to one another on cocktail napkins between moves that read "nigga bitch"? I doubt it. Yet what do these patterns say about the culture that surrounds this game?
(Cue the litany of abuse and insults.)
How I wish I could meet more people like you Todorojo in this game rather than the toxic brigade that think needless bravado and constant harassment is a necessity.
Sadly I find myself more and more in crew/friend sessions just to avoid these idiots and strongly suspect the people I would most like to meet are doing the same thing.
A sad state of affairs indeed.
