When you see a game on Console, Xbox360 as many devs say "is basically a stuck pc", when you see a game on Xbox, you know for a fact the game is done, But what we don't know is
1: How much extra will be added for the next versions,
2: how much compatibility work is left to do
3: how much stuff nvidia wants them to get in there for their new cards
Stuff like that. The bulk of the game is done. All the art is done, the high textures waiting on their time to be shown and so on, the bulk is done, the engine is cross platform by nature now, so while we can say "the game is done" since it's on an xbox, what we cannot say is that "it's ready for consumers and waiting" - it likely needs a lot of work yet.
There is also a huge likelihood it has trailed behind, as people were shifted over to the initial launch product to help during the delay.
Yep, it's on it's way. Yep, it's basically done. But nope, it's not ready for sale. When it is close, they will tell us. It's definitely spent some time in side-by-side, but the delay of PC version of max payne and overall delay of V, it surely set them back, but not likely 6 months back.
Delaying a platform is NEVER good for anyone. What they do in the face of having to, serves them well, and is great tactics to compensate for shortcomings, but it is the best interest of every company to get any product out asap. A delay is NEVER planned for a platform, and just a fact of life for some developers, and Rockstar has done well playing a bad hand good, but they know the best thing for them, internally and in the eyes of the consumer, is simultaneous release, which they are working toward as a conglomerate.
But if you can, it is ALWAYS best to launch simultaneous. Extra/double sales to players on console then PC, any other thing, it's a great compensation tactic, but it's not ideal. Ideal is out the door, and move on - you never ever want to be stuck working on one platform while other projects wait, and the game has already launched elsewhere. It's shooting self in the foot, delaying next projects etc.
Maybe take two (rockstar games parent company), for business reasons holds the PC version a few months for extra profit, if that whole buy the game once for consoles and then again for pc, is their strategy. I think that tactic ruins the hype of PC only gamers and affects their sales. When GTA IV was released on PC, because it was such a bad optimized game its initial sales were underwhelming because you needed a very powerful PC and most people don´t have one. Now if rockstar releases Five well optimized and this year (when theres still hype it will sell a lot in the first days and in the years ahead because PC is always compatible with older games and consoles aren´t.
Too bad we can't do anything about it...
We could pressure rockstar into giving out information, or we could prove that PC market is evolving and maybe in a few years the consoles will be outdated, companies will complain about not having conditions to make new games so they will turn to PC, and then the consoles as we know them could very well extinct because you can´t upgrade a console , so in the future maybe we wont need any more restricted consoles or PS plus Xbox live to play games, it will universal like buying a movie on a DVD and watch it in almost every DVD player.
