You always make more money appealing to the lowest common denominator... in the short term. Look at the film industry. Big blockbusters are usually sure bet money makers but in the long term people get sick of them and move on. Why do you think that tickets sales for films have been declining over the past several years? Look at this past summer and many blockbusters bombed. The same goes for the gaming industry, it's losing money. Video game sales are on the decline. One reason is: thinking about short term profit. You can make money in the short term with a sub-standard product but it will hurt you in the long term when there is no innovation.
