|The Build Up Your Gang forum story game has been an icon in the GTAForum community for well over 5 years now. We are proud to present Build Up Your Gang once more. The concept of this is not hard; you simply pick a gang and one of its properties you then write stories for that gang based at that property. You will receive money for the stories you write. This money then goes towards buying weapons, vehicles, rackets and businesses, and drugs, which then cane be used to improve your stories and earn money. Better stories mean more money.|
We hope youíll take part in the fun
The BUYG Staff
|The Build Up Your Gang Staff includes:|
|1. Read through the rules carefully before asking to join.|
|2. Your stories should be typed up in Microsoft Word, or an equivalent programme, and the spelling and grammar should be checked first.|
|3. Do not post incomplete stories. Whilst length isn't mandatory, it should include a fully-formed idea which runs throughout the piece.|
|4. Flaming is strictly against the rules, as is non-BUYG related conversation. However, you can discuss your stories as well as others, ideas for the thread, and requests for purchases and sales.|
|5. Double-posting is against the rules too. If you want to add something, then edit your original post. It is only allowed if the topic has been inactive for a while.|
|6. If any of these rules are consistently broken, then we reserve the right to ban you from all BUYG topics. If you still post in the topic, whether it be under the same or a new account, we will request for you to be banned by from the forums by a moderator.|
|7. If you have 5 stories writen for BUYG IV you can use that story count to switch gangs here.|
|Each gang starts out with $100, a basic melee weapon, and two vehicles. The second vehicle is listed in red, and will only be available for use once a total of twenty stories have been written for that gang.|
|When you write stories, you may not use weapons and vehicles that your gang does not own. You have to buy them first. If you want to sell anything (weapons, vehicles, rackets and businesses) then you get half the value you paid for them.|
|The BUYG account acts as law enforcement officials. Confiscations occur every Saturday, and are selected using a random generator. Weapons, vehicles, drugs and rackets and businesses are vulnerable to being confiscated.|
|Money from our Rackets and Businesses scheme will be distributed every Sunday.|
|If an entire gang becomes inactive after a month without notice beforehand, all money-making schemes will be frozen. They will resume once the gang becomes active again.|
|The BUYG staff will PM you if you have been inactive for a significant amount of time asking for you to post in the topic within the week, if you do not, then you will be wiped from the tables.|
|If you decide that you want to switch gangs, then your story count so far is bracketed. Each new story you write is added to the bracketed number, as well as starting afresh with an unbracketed number. The bracketed number is used for multiple of five bonuses. The unbracketed number is used for other rewards, such as weapons and vehicles, as well as unlocking the bonus vehicles for your gang.|
|If you wish to expand, then you must buy property off of other gangs. You may only purchase property if itís unoccupied. If the gang has an active member writing, only under a different property, then you must have their consent. If youíre buying a property which is in a city where your gang is already established, then itíll cost $300. If you wish to expand to another city, itíll cost $600.|
Thanks to M|chael and Benjimino234 for these great sigs. If you like the look of one of them, just copy the BBcode and paste it into the 'Edit my signature' box in your profile. Thanks!
For gang-specific signatures, see the magnificent ones made by Tyla in this post.

The concept of this is not hard; you simply pick a gang and one of its areas. You then write stories for that gang and asset. You will receive $$$ for the stories you write. Remember, better stories means more $$$ (no one said length was a bad idea either).
We hope youíll take part in the fun
The BUYG Staff
BUYG Staff Members:
Just post your first story, for which gang and at which location it is set, and when Staff get around to rating stories, your name will be added to the list of scorecards below.
|With a New Year comes new joys and Build Up Your Gang IV is starting 2011 with a total revamp:|
|1. You can now write for up to five gangs.|
Gone are slots and the need to find a space in a gang. If you want to write the for Gambettis, start writing for the Gambettis. Bored of the Gambettis and want to try the Irish Mob? Feel free, itís all part of the game. Be mindful though, that a five gang limit is in place to promote better quality and assist with Staffís work.
|2. Likewise, your hard earned cash no longer belongs to a single gang. Itís yours for you to do as you wish, however and wherever you wish.|
|3. Properties are no longer reserved for a single writer.|
|4. All your information will now be collected in a single writerís card. Scroll down or follow this link further information.|
|5. Each Gang has a starting vehicle. Plus, each new member starts with a pistol.|
|Rules for Build Up Your Gang: IV|
|General Rules & Guidelines|
|1||You must not post more than one story in a 24 hour period.|
|2||If you cannot come up with a complete thought please don't bother posting what you have at all. Just save it in notepad or word or something and come back with a complete story.[/i][/u]|
|3||Please don't post half of a story and say you will be back to update it later as this can cause confusion to those that have to grade your stories.|
|4||To make it easier on us please check your spelling and grammar carefully as it makes it harder for us to read and grade them with multiple errors.|
|5||Please refrain from "flaming" other members as this will get this topic one of those neat, but unneeded, locks.|
|6||Most importantly if you need any help or assistance with writing/brainstorming/developing stories or if you feel the need to comment on the thread then please contact me with your opinions/expressions/concerns/problems. In addition to this if you feel that rule 4 had been broken please contact us before taking any action yourself.|
|7||NO DOUBLE POSTING, just edit your initial post.|
|8||We the BUYG Staff reserve the right to ban you from the topic if you break any of the rules. No exceptions.|
|9||Conversation is allowed in the topic. But refrain from going off topic.|
|10||Please refrain from cluttering up the topic. Try and keep any questions regarding purchases, gang wars, cash, story count, etc. brief and avoid unnecessary discussion, preferably by keeping to PMs where possible.|
|Weapons & Vehicles|
|1||Guns and vehicles are purchased from your total cash, not your earnings for a single gang.|
|2||On joining a gang, you will have access to the gang's default vehicle.|
|3||Additionally, on your first post as a writer, you have access to a pistol. This only applies to your first ever story and not on subsequent moves to another gang.|
|4||You may only use the weapons you own for the gang you are writing for.|
Own a Sub-Machine Gun for the Ancelottis and want to write about one for the Hillside Posse? You have to buy another for that gang.
|These guidelines and rules have been brought to you by the BUYG Staff.|
If you have any questions or problems regarding BUYG, in any of it's forms, then please contact Build Up Your Gang via PM.
|Lochie's guide to writing|
|You feel like writing? Well, this is the place for you then. Read below for some helpful advice and stuff.|
|1. Characters, locations and storylines: Develop your characters well, try to avoid using well-known characters from GTA IV as your main character, but instead make up your own. Its alot more fun and original, its okay to include characters from GTA IV, but just don't rely on them all the time, get creative. With locations, be certain you've got the scenery and street names down pat, try to avoid silly little mistakes. Plan your stories out and make sure you have a feel of the location. Storylines are easy, just try to avoid cliche's.|
|2. Spell Check:|
Spell Check is vital, a bad story = less money and annoyed staff
That's just horrible, use MS word. If you've got a burning idea but can't finish it, save it in Notepad and come back to it later.

|1. DO NOT use weapons that your gang doesn't own and the same goes for vehicles. However keep in mind that when you purchase something for the gang anyone that is in that gang can use that item now.|
|2. The vehicles listed in red can only be used after a total of 20 stories have been written within your gang. You cannot use these vehicles before that condition is met.|
|3. If all of your gangs' properties have been occupied, you can buy more land for your gang. If you want a property in a city where you already have properties, it will cost $200. If you want to expand into a new city, it will cost $350. You may not purchase land that is already owned by another gang.|
|4. If the entire gang is idle for a week then so become their assets and their assets will look like this (|
|5. You can also take over property but it will cost you triple($600) what it would for a regular property. Also needed is the consent of the person who owns it and if no one owns it then you need the consent of the member of the gang who has been there the longest. Half the money will go to the gang the other half will just be taken away.|
|6. As of 5/31/08, if you decide to switch gangs, your old story count will be bracketed ( ) and you will start afresh with a new story count. The bracketed story count will be the sum of all your story counts from all the gangs you've joined, and the bracketed story count is used for bonuses such as the Multiple of 5 bonus, etc. See this post for more details.|

Build Up Your Gang
|1.) The gang that was attacked must form some solid reason (in an official post, in total character) about who they believe did it and why or how they're going to retaliate. This will be a Declaration.|
|2.) The two gangs meet with someone assigned to make all the formalities, write down what assets can't be blown to hell, what characters they don't want dying, anything agreed upon. But, at the same time, the other person must agree and get another favor in turn. Say if The Haitians don't want a specific drug-factory destroyed, the Cubans must accept it and not have one of their assets destroyed in return. Each gang is given a total of FIVE REQUESTS before the war begins. The lead characters will automatically be safe from being killed or from serious injury (unless agreed upon before the war starts).|
|3.) They go to war in their next story (that's right ONE story per person per gang), a panel of judges (The BUYG staff) will judge on a combination of four things: |
1. Who writes the best story
2. Whose is the most reasonable
3. Who plotted theirs out strategically
4. Who made the clearest victory within their story
If it's close, the decision will be given to an independent source for the tie-breaker.
|Any current gang wars (pending or in process) will be listed below|
|So ya wanna be a |
Hmm riiiight. I just thought seeing as my stories are so fantastic and all I'd write up a little quide for the new comers, maybe some of the veterans but generally we all write pretty well.
Um I don't advise that any teachers on the board try to use it in their classes. Without permission of course. See copyright ^^
|Step 1: Storyline - research key elements. Use tried and tested ideas. We've all seen the occasional gangster flick, so remember the sort of stuff you see in that, then come up with your own elements. I drew alot of inspiration from The Sopranos and GoodFellas which makes sense seeing as I was writing for the mob. Make it interesting but don't make up a heap of unbelievable bullsh*t. For eg. 'I pulled out of the parking lot and 50 niggaz with AK rocked up and started attacking me" is not going to win you any awards. Remember to plan the story to at least a few chapters ahead. Make sure you have all the key events planned for a while, then you'll be able to write to a plan and not run out of ideas.|
|Step 2: Location - Visualise the location you're writing in. For example in the story where my characters attacked a Triad convoy I (in San Andreas) looked for a good place to do it that made sense. I drove around Venturas figuring out routes for the characters to travel, I went and looked at the layout of Caligula's, where the other casinos were, I looked at maps of the city for pieces of writing.|
|Step 3: Typing - Always use Microsoft Word, or an equivalent to it, when writing your stories. It checks spelling and grammar and is easy to correct things. It also acts as a back-up if anything ever goes wrong. Here's what could go wrong when not using it:|
Now that is shocking.
|Step 4: Layout - I found that the best way to do it is to have all action sequences in separate paragraphs. For example when going from one day to the next, leave a space between paragraphs. |
Put speech onto a new line unless it's the same person talking e.g.
"So anyway he says he wants to whack this guy," Jason said. "And that he reckons he'll do it soon."
Oh, just a note by the way, with speech brackets " " the correct way to portray a sentence is, "insert writing here," he said. The comma goes before the close speech bracket and the fullstop after he said or any other suitable adjective. When using a question mark or exclamation mark at the end of the dialogue, the following word, unless it's a proper noun, should start with a lower case letter. E.g.
"What are you talking about?" he asked. [or] "What are you talking about?" Mike said.
Don't use he said, she said all the time either. Stuff like he asked, she replied, Joe shouted, Jane yelled. Put adjectives to describe the way they said it, or what they're doing as they say it. e.g.
"F*ck that," he said loading his gun. "Are you joking?" He replied, shocked.
Don't simply do a "I went here and did this, afterwards I did that. He did that so I did this" kind of storyline. Elaborate! Description is the key to a good story. Describe everything, it adds to the imagery and allows the reader to visualise the events of the storyline. And! You get more money for it too!
Um so yeah. Just doing my part to try and help.
Remember! Quality over quantity. A descriptive, short story is often better than a long, boring one lacking in description.
