Whenever I select any of the text formating stuff on the site (italic, bold, underline, etc) some weird stuff appears ( â€‹ â€‹ â€‹ â€‹) It only happens in this site, and i've seen this on other users' posts. Is this just some IPB issue or something in my end?

That happened to me too. Do you use Google Chrome? I think that's the problem.

Yeah, I do. But this eventually goes away, right?

I don't know, it isn't a problem to me though since I always have the text type box thing set up like this so I don't see it. It only works in the other setting.

Those are character encodings. I haven't seen them so far, but I've read about this on other forums, and its likely that you have either copy/pasted some text (including commas, etc) from either WORD or directly from any web page of the site and then applying any of the formatting options leads to some error when the forum is not able to detect the proper encoding of the text you have copied.

Always paste using Ctrl+Shift+V, which automatically removes whatever incompatible formatting exists from the copied text. There's a reason why the option "remove format" exists on the forum editing page.

Also, next time remember to take a screenshot.

EDIT:

I was able to reproduce this.

Spoiler

I didn't copy paste stuff, and yet it showed up, really strange. I first typed the whole text including the "^^^^" thing, then I applied  'bold' to "^^^^" characters, and after pressing "Enter", I came across "" in 'bold'. It appears after pressing "Enter" each time as you can see in the image posted above.

Removing the 'bold' from "^^^^" stops '' from appearing.

I get this at work when I download excel files in CSV format. It's pretty irritating.

I'd be willing to buy the dogs a bunch of treats if they would leave those damn symbol alone dangnabit!!

Wouldn't be so bad if it only happened once when you pressed the key but instead every time you press ENTER or try and italic one word and then go back to normal typeface but can't because the symbol keep popping up and only way to fix it is by going into non-format

Can the mods put the â€‹ in a blacklisted words thingy, kinda like how they replace swear words, but to replace â€‹ with nothing?

It could be a browser issue than the forum software. According to the phpbb response for a similar issue, the browser should be using UTF-8 encoding. I think most browsers are using it anyways but for clarity's sake, check the browsers encoding from the settings menu and see whether it is using UTF-8 or not.
If that's not the case then there's likely a bug in the forum's software, somewhere under the encoding and formatting preferences.

I am using Safari on Mac and get the same issue. It's REALLY annoying and only began happening about 2 weeks ago.

I didn't realize it until then. Now, it's in every post I make.

Every time I hit "RETURN" on my keyboard, it starts a new line with "."

 <-- see?

 ugh.

I don't have any encoding settings in my browser (I use vivaldi btw), but my system wide encoding is UTF-8 (I know this for sure since I use Linux and you have to set the encoding). If you're correct, then this weird character issue is something to do with the forum software.

It definitely looks like all the issues described in this thread are caused by the encoding of the texts, especially, after pressing enter.

For me, it happened only once, and so far this is not an issue on either of the browsers I am using, be it chrome or firefox. Not even on mobile. What I do find often is the "&nbsp" tag after clicking the "Options" on the editor.

Please note, I also uninstalled the browsers and re-installed them a few days back after this issue was reported, and since then I haven't seen any symbols appearing on the editor, so far - except the &nbsp tags that appear occasionally.in the editor.

So, try uninstalling the browser, remove all registry entries and clear all the leftover files and cache entries before reinstalling the browser again.

The issue seems to be affecting only a select amount of members around here, based on the responses in this thread and not everyone, which is why I am not sure whether the problem is due to some bug in the forum's software or some settings inside the browser is creating this problem for others.

I thought they fixed it today because

wasn't appearing when I pressed enter, but now it is.  :dontgetit:
