I think it would be nice to start the game as a character that just ends up dying and switching to the ACTUAL main character.

I dunno, just came into my mind for no reason.

Thoughts?

as a concept, it's pretty cool, would really shake me up if done earlier in the game, imagine you think you just died in the first couple of missions but you find out that that's what you needed to do!

What about 15-20 fake main characters through the storyline? That would be a bold new direction!

Or how about we play the whole game with the "fake" protagonist. He dies and we realise the proper protagonist was just having a dream and that's when the game actually begins?

Or what if we play as cannon fodder, sorta like in Austin Powers where the lackeys that get killed by the main protagonist actually have a family and such and such lol, then when you'd die you'd just be the main guy.

This is what we would get if George R.R. Martin would write a screenplay for next GTA.

You mean like in Assassins creed 3 (spoiler alert) where you played as templar for few sequences then you switched to his son and killed him?

Maybe if those protagonists were all connected somehow,so that when one dies, the one that replaces him keeps all the vehicles, weapons, clothes, safehouses and other stuff the previous protagonist had.It would suck having to get your favorite car every time you get to play as a new protagonist.

Fake seems an inappropriate term. I understand the idea behind the concept. Its pretty much how multiple protagonist would work as well, like GTA V, except either of the two out of three characters won't survive for the rest of the story (for reasons?), and the third character will carry forward the story as the main protagonist.

Sounds cool to me. It can offer some great twists, and surprises, like the well written story of GTA SA with lots of interesting events, and characters, which hooked me right till the end.

The story will need a strong reason for the starting character to die, and the main protagonist to take over the role from thereon. The main character could also be described as a direct relative to the starting character, though I wouldn't want to see rehashed revenge plots, but something different, and entirely refreshing one.

For example: The main protagonist is introduced after a couple of missions to figure out the reasons behind the starting character's death, who may be involved in some shady business, and connected to criminals, as the main protagonist learns, and uncovers more truth about the whole background of the starting character, which is revealed gradually, and goes parallel to it.

Nah I hate that sh*t. AC3 did it and I liked the first dude so much more than the actual protagonist that it just dragged down the game for me

I dont think ACIII done it to the same effect as Connor was used in all the marketing pre-release so everyone knew he was the protagonist. Playing as Haytham was really just set up for the twist that he was a

It's a classic bait and switch. I think it would work. Imagine if you will that we see three or four trailers all featuring one character who we are lead to believe is the protagonist. All the promotional art features them, and we even hear their voice. For all intents and purposes, this is who we'll be taking control of for one of the most anticipated sequels of the decade... only for them to be shot in the head four missions in, and we take control of the person who delivered that blow.

Yeah, I dig it.

If the fake protagonist is Madrazo or LJT, I'd happily play for the sweet implication that the character I was really controlling had ended them (and their phone spam).

It would be a bit of an interesting concept if the real player was our own 'online' character (either existing from current online, or a new one we create for the new game), but I don't think R* have the writing talent any more to have a story mode with a mute protagonist. Unless we decide on a voice and have a Mass Effect dialogue-choice-wheel to branch the storyline in different directions.

Alternatively we could have a number of characters to inhabit as the game progresses. Trailer protagonist exists for a few missions, but is sniped by an unknown figure on a rooftop. We then take control of a paramedic who collects the corpse and is debriefed a few missions later by a cop. We then control said cop as they investigate the murder... etc. etc. etc.

They tried, because some missions in GTA:Online have player/character interactions and there are countless ways they react, with some even drawing attention to the fact their mute or stoic. I'll agree that I don't think it can be done with sincerity though, especially nowadays when characters are more defined and personable than ever before.

Sounds fun on paper but eventually there'd be a group of people out there who would complain to Rockstar about that they liked the character and want to see more of them. The character would have to intentionally be unlikable so that by the time he/she dies the player would be relieved that they no longer have to deal with them.

I don't even that'll work. You think of your least favourite character and I'll put money on it that someone will leap in front of you, fingers held aloft like guns challenging you to a duel, daring you to explain why you're putting their favourite character down.

What you'd have to do is make them a morally corrupt and downright disgusting reprobate who is into some really disgusting porn, or rapes as freely as we'd do laundry. That wouldn't work either though, as you can guarantee R* wouldn't want such a negative figure in one of their lead titles, even if they do end up peppered with bullet holes. Plus, you can also guarantee news articles would absolutely slate the game despite not playing even 45 seconds worth of it.

Rightly so too, I don't think I'd be alright with playing as somebody so heinous, even if they get killed off early on.

It could actually be interesting if done right like you start off as a character in the prequel who dies and then you carry on as somebody related to them in order to go after those responsible for their death or something.

I have a great idea: how about when you die, you'd have to start all over again, like groundhog day.

No, just no.

How about we have 4-6 main protagonists but as the game progresses your characters die an you may potentially unlock new characters depending on your decisions during the game? To the extent that by the end of the game you would have played with like 10 to 20 characters.

Imagine that among these characters there are past main protagonists from previous GTA games like Niko or Franklin, or other important characters like Lamar, or Little Jacob, and so on, in addition to the new characters, of course.

The characters that you would be unlocking would be 100% based on your decisions and performance in game, there would be a real butterfly effect where all the missions, protagonists, locations and secondary characters you met would be different based on how you played the whole game. That sh*t would be awesome IMHO.
