I don't see R* adding an entire new system into online after 4 years just because all of the other AAA Developers. Maybe in the next iteration of GTA Online but not now.

Purchase of loot boxes for gta$, much like in FH3 and the purchase of wheel spins, could be added in.

But Wheelspins are super easy to earn. I have over 100 unused ones not counting the 100 more I've already used. Buying lootboxes in GTAO as it's economy exists now would be a hassle. It'd probably be 10K per lootbox best case scenario and the knowing lootboxes it'd probably have lackluster stuff in it.

On a side note, Happy Wars also have lootboxes and I hate them so much if only because there's over 1000 weapons available, half of them are exotics. And that's not counting armors and helmets which also have exotics. Despite this, I get hundreds of duplicates of poopy items just so the devs can sell microtransactions. I've been playing for a long ass time and I must only have 40 exotic item out of the entire item pool.

Don't want them but would not be surprised to see them in the next GTA.

How do they work?

Lootboxes?

It's like gambling. The more you pay the chances u get goodies.

Forza,Star Wars, shadow of war,ac.cod. They all have this system now In placed.

Started with overwatch and ppl saying oh it's "cosmetic" doesn't effect gameplay.....well lookie now.

I think you can blame Valve for this one, CSGO has had lootboxes for ages, certainly well before Overwatch was even a thing.

Honestly I don;t think Rcokstar could get away with being as on the nose as bringing in lootboxes chances are we will just get more content that steals sections of the lootbox idea, e.g the research being utterly random in the GR DLC is shockingly close to the the randomness of most lootboxes. GTA6 on the other hand I suspect Rcokstar will go full retard on the lootbox system, tattoos, clothes, vehicle mods the game is literally begging for it and you can bet the Rcokstar will be all over that like a fly on sh*te... on top of course the usual overpriced samey DLC.

I wouldn't be surprised if loot crates were added. Bunker Research is pretty f*cking close already.

I don't think they'll be added to GTA Online at this point, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them in RDR2 or GTA VI's Online.

In the present iteration of GTA Online? No.

In GTAO2 in four or five or however many years? I don't know. I suspect an Online redesigned from the ground up would have a lot more MMORPG elements. We'll see what RDR Online looks like, if it comes to pass.

i could see some lootbox type of system on rdr(if it has multiplayer), unless they feel like selling gold coins and gold bullions.

on gtao, they got the cashcard system pretty much dialed in, so no loot boxes needed, eventho i'd be happy to pay $1-2 for some special shirts.

Funny part is no matter what rockstar does for any future games, they will not make as much money as they did with gta v and online. Maybe had they not f*cked over the fanbase that got rockstar to where they are today, I would buy future games from them. Oh well, there not getting any more money from me. I will do what I normally do with modern games. Watch someone else play it for free on twitch. Like the big money now rockstar, it will only last for so long.

luckily it's unlikely as their microtransactions are better (no RNG) and you know what your buying, and can always just play instead.

The loot box thing is RNG.

Bunker research is RNG.

We already have our version of loot boxes.

that's true but you can't get duplicates and it has a finite end. i hate research but it's nowhere near as bad as loot crates.

Why is everyone assuming that you need everything in GTA?

Well, the whole point of GTA Online is earning money and spending it on things.

Also, why is bad if a player wants "everything" in a reasonable ammount of time or by paying a reasonable ammount of money?

Even the GR "pay wall" bullsh*t wasn't an issue and I welcomed it - shame they allowed fast tracking it.

Really dude? REALLY???

Of all the things that are plain wrong with the game and that you keep insisting in defending for some reason, yet you choose to also defend research, arguably the worst addition to the game since the Hydra?

Which was a RGN paywall, shameless cashgrab and overall a load of bullsh*t, literally ripped from a mobile game?

I would welcome loot crates if they come with items which were rare but didn't give any unfair advantage.

Do you really think that R* will miss the chance to offer overpowered items in loot boxes to entice players to buy them, on order to remain "competitive" (for lack of a better word)?

Wait, that already happened with Research.

I didn't say it was bad for someone to want everything, I just don't believe it's required.

I've only ever used my AA trailer once, and that was yesterday while doing MC contracts in a crew session while another crew member had his insurgent custom out and I wanted to check if it could tow the AA trailer. I have zero use for it though. I have used my Technical Custom once, my Ardent a couple of times (purely because I like how it drives), my halftrack has never been used, my Dune FAV has never been used... I use about 5% of what I own. Having everything is not required, just desired.

I welcomed the research, yes. I was disappointed by how it worked (fast track, unable to choose items etc) however when I read that items would not be available instantly for everyone it sounded good. I would welcome further research too. I don't see how I am defending anything when I'm purely stating opinion though. Your's clearly differs to mine, that's all there is to that.

What Rockstar chooses to exploit is not the issue here. My opinion on it is that I am in favor of it with the proviso of "but didn't give any unfair advantage". To save reading between the lines or avoid any implied statements which I have not made nor implied - Do I see Rockstar missing a chance to exploit players, no. Would I welcome them exploiting players, no. Am I in favor of loot boxes? Yes - with the provisions I have stated.

This. Every time I get a notice about a new research unlock I cant help but feel like Ive just earned a loot crate/box.

I would like to think that the community was vocally upset about their inclusion, but I believe that R* posted record earnings after.

The investment and potential grind to earn one is keeping certain items off the street. Otherwise every tryhard would be an explosive round carrying lobby griefer.

If they did, it'd ruin their reputation. They already have cash cards, adding awful loot boxes would interfere of the cards profit.I don't think they would, but possibly in RDR2. What if, you unlock items for your character through them or something.

R* following the EABorg and Ubiflaccid into micro transaction purgatory. Smh.

That would be the beginning of the end of the GTA franchise

Good god no, lootboxes are nothing more than gambling. You put in your money for a chance at something nice, get something s*** and inconsequential, but feel compelled to put in more money for more boxes, because there's a small chance you'll get lucky and win something really nice, they're a horrible practice that prey on people the same way that casino's do. People complain about shark cards, but at least you know what you're getting when you purchase one, the same cannot be said for lootboxes.

Lootboxes are cancer.  I'd retch at the thought of them coming to GTA Online were it not for the fact that shark cards + the grind + general burnout already drove me away.

I really hate that they're in Rocket League, a game I am otherwise a big fan of.  So crap.  I understand why developers want to (sometimes have to) sell you things beyond the game's base price, but making you pay for just a CHANCE to get something good?  Get f*cked with that nonsense.  Too many game companies are turning into some unholy modern version of Las Vegas casinos, or Phillip Morris.

Didnt know what they were before reading about them on here and Kotaku.

Sounds like the very definition of gambling, regardless of what the ESRB says.

Wonder how the game companies will react when they start getting CC chargebacks from disgruntled customers who didnt get what they want

If your comparing the bunker rng to mmos rng go kys.

I highly doubt it since micro transactions are raking in money.

The only reason it's not technically gambling (according to most state gambling laws anyway) is that you usually aren't winning anything with a cash value.  It's not just the game of chance thing that is meaningful, it's whether or not you have a chance to get money back.  Gambling isn't regulated because people spend money on it, it's regulated because it may provide income that the government will want to tax.

This would get murky in a game with lootboxes and a secondary resale market (i.e. a game where players can give each other items and therefore will sell their gear on eBay).  Arguably in that scenario, the items have a cash value, even if it's one that fluctuates constantly.  But GTA items have no cash value because you can't sell them to someone else.  It's a virtual item that stays with your account and essentially disappears if you stop playing.

Watch the next iteration of GTAO have most clothing locked away behind lootboxes. While still selling sharkcards. And charging $60 or more to play the game.

Unless, of course, people finally stop buying into this bullsh*t and the lootbox meme dies before R* decides to make another GTA.

I know I know every time someone suggests something horrible that could be added to the game I point to DCUO, but this is already used there.

They have micro transactions and also loot boxes. The micro transaction store is full of useless cosmetic items such as weapon skins, auras, and wings for your toon and such. Also reskills and such.
You can also buy bundles of lock box keys. These are for the boxes that drop from enemies every so often.
Inside the boxes are mostly useless crap. Cosmetic items and such. But also the occasional piece of OP gear.
You end up with a lot of duplicate items which you could then sell on the in game auction house. If you spend real money on keys you usually end up feeling screwed. It feels like gambling at a completely rigged casino. If you don't spend real money on keys you usually end up feeling screwed. It feels like you cannot unlock the next series of missions without spending real money on a chance to win the gear you need to get your gear stats high enough to qualify to play the next level.

So how could it even work here? I sincerely doubt that R* would put a Hydra, R2K, or APC in a loot box. Too much to lose on that.
That leaves smaller things, like clothing, cheap cars, and weapons. Looking at these, it doesn't seem like things people would spend money on.
Unless the devs put the limited time items in loot boxes and made those available year round I just don't see where it would be a benefit to their bottom line.
