The LF-22 Starling!

Crazy little flea based on the German Me-163 "Komet" interceptor from WWII

Me-163-Komet-Udvar-Hazy-2752.jpg

Ingame it is:

-Single seat aircraft

-Costs $3,657,500 from Warstock

-Trade price is lowered to $2,750,000

-Comes with two wing-mounted machine guns standard.

-Can equip bombs.

-Same payload capacity as the rest of the larger planes

-Can also be upgraded with missile pods on each wing.

-They appear to hold three rockets each, but do not run out...

Flight is attained through using a rocket "boost" much like the Oppressor.

It can run out, and needs to recharge if run dry.

Plane is restricted to gliding and gradually loses momentum if booster is run empty.

Rocket booster may be upgraded for longer and more potent boost.

Unlike the Oppressor it has a much higher capacity and is able to recharge in mid-air without the need to touch the ground.

Rocket boost can be toggled on and off at any stage.

Recharge seems to be quicker if the booster isn't allowed to run dry.

Can accelerate faster than a Hydra, Lazer, or even Besra when sustaining rocket thrust.

Unlike the craft it is based off of, the Starling has a single centered wheel at the center of mass and a smaller single wheel centered under the tail.

Seems to use witchcraft to remain upright, and bobbles like an egg when maneuvering on the ground.

Doesn't seem to be able to be tipped over...

Boasts fantastic agility, even un-upgraded.

Contains a number of different liveries.

Has dual-color respray options.

Quite the craft.

Looks to be based solely on the German Me-163 Komet WWII era jet fighter.

First aircraft of any type to exceed 1000kph in level flight (though probably won't come close to that in GTA:O...)

That thing's too tiny to be a jet fighter. The Me 163 was rocket powered, but it could be case of R* logic if it's a jet in-game.

Should be fun to fly, and like the real thing, I'm guessing it will explode on most landings due to how players have a tendency to smack aircraft back down onto the runway when attempting a landing.

I will laugh if R* decide to make it realistic. It's basically a glider with a single-burn rocket and some weapons strapped onto it.

Defiantly a strange but nifty little plane. I'm really curious to how it competes with other aircraft.

Actually, the propeller is just to measure airspeed and run the speedo.

Rockets are a form of jet. Didn't know that till a few months ago.

Are they really? Never knew that.

I was referring to airbreathing jet engines with my R* logic comment.

I'd bet on this having a rocket using the recharge mechanic of the other rockets. It'll surely be the fastest plane in the game for a couple seconds the rocket lasts. Then probably 10 seconds of glide until you can fire the rocket again.

The propeller on the nose of the original aircraft is used to drive a generator, which provided electrical power to onboard systems(as the engine has no rotating components to run it off of )

Airspeed would be measured by the pressure difference between the pitot tube(the long tube on the port side wing, seen on the second image in the OP) and the static port(which may also be part of the pitot tube assembly on some aircraft, or just a hole in the side of the fuselage).

Has anybody else found a little bit haunting when this airplane came for the smuggling run mission?

Specially on first person view, the cockpit really looks like a Nazi fighter even without the swastikas.

Probably because its real lofe counter part was to be used as an interceptor for the luffewaffe during WW2. Although with its introduction to service being in 1944 I dont believe it saw much action.

But yeah I agree as much as I like it there definatly is something about it.

Absolutely love the Starling. Bought it the first moment I could. True it looks like it is indeed modeled after the Me-163, but I dressed my aircraft up in matte black like a U-2 (and my pilot now that I can do orange flight suit with white helmet) since a U-2 is what it's flying characteristics most remind me of. Extremely fast acceleration, climbs very quickly, and the hardest thing you can ever try to land. U-2's aren't armed though, strictly recon, so having bombs and missles is quite a departure.

Have you tried to land one of these things yet? Just like the U-2 (and actually unlike the Me-163) it has bicycle landing gear. No Pogos visible, but the aircraft acts like they are there. It does not ever want to land, every time you hit the ground it wants to pop up and fly again...you have to come in very very slow and very very level to get it stopped safely. I love the challenge. I wonder if the Me-163 was difficult to land as well.

You know, at first I was a bit distraught when I found out that it was a rocket-propelled plane that needed to be toggled.

Once you run it dry, the thing becomes a sitting duck in the air...

But after a few test flights, and a few scuffles, I love this plane.

You can disengage the thrust when you don't need it active and store a lot of it for when you need to zip away.

The reservoir is massive, and it doesn't burn as fast as the Oppressor.

I wonder if the Me-163 was difficult to land as well.

Among the pilots who flew the "Komet" it had the nickname "The Devil's Sled", I think that gives a clue as to its behaviour. In 1942 Hanna Reitsch, one of the test pilots working on the development of the Me163 described flying it as "fascinating, like thundering through the skies sitting on a cannonball". A few months later during a test flight she ploughed into the ground at about 150mph resulting in ...multiple spinal fractures, 6 fractures of the skull, a displaced jaw and a severed nose. Amazingly she survived and a year later rejoined the Me 163 project.

The GTA version seems to have most of the characteristics of the real Komet apart from having endless fuel and ammunition. Landing is "fun" but can be achieved as long as you make maximum use of the air-brakes and make your approach as slowly and level as possible.

The cool thing about this plane is, when you look at it from the outside it looks like the ME 163, but from the inside it feels and looks much larger, larger wingspan, like a B1. Acceleration is great and when gliding, the angles you can make are insane!(race handling) Landing 'IS' fun, you have to make sure to have the rotors down. Too bad the bombing doesn't work all the time
Love it!!

Pretty sure you can't, the landing gear is fixed in place.

the thing is fast as f*ck, with the boost upgrade its like the oppressor on roids, willing to bet its the fastest vehicle in the game.

The original had sled takeoff wheels (ie they get left behind) and did belly landings on skids. Bit beyond the GTAO engine I guess.

I have a new first choice for the "longest parachute freefall" escalator - this thing just goes and goes all the way there.

You can also recharge the boost on the ground really fast, when your boost is empty drive a little bit on the ground (runway, street, ...) and the boost fully recharges in like 2 seconds :). I like this thing, it has something sinister to it, just feels nice to glide through the air at high altitude at nighttime and use it as a bomber. I know the bombs don't hit anything from too high but it still fun :).

Would be cool if it goes off the radar like the little glider when not using the boost/ just gliding.

I don't like the moneygrabbing mentality by R* but they sure added some cool original aircraft. Off topic: a couple of Alpha Z1's with smoke makes up for a cool airshow :)

Why are people using this as a fighter? Its not supposed to be a fighter.

Its a long range bomber, the other weapons are for light defence.

You streak in at insane speeds, vaporise your target and vanish.

If bombing was actually accurate and we could actually dive bomb in this game, then this and the Rogue would be very competent bombers.

But as it stands, bombing is a gimmick, fun and can work as suppressing fire, and maybe the moral factor in free roam wars, but it still is a gimmick

Dont bomb from a great height?

Use the Starlings speed to swoop in low and rain hell. Bombing is very accurate with practice. I use the lifeguard hut at the beach for practice.

I wasn't expecting it'd be good in dogfights, it being a bomber. What's it like upgraded?

The maneuvering is crazy good, and you can beef up the rocket boost. It takes a while to burn through the bar after that, and touching the ground briefly recharges it completely in 2 seconds like the Oppressor (except it also recharges slowly in the air).

Homing missiles are its main dogfight tool unless you're good with the MG's; they fire as fast and as constant as the savage. You can just spam the ever loving crap out of them and they overwhelm countermeasures and counter-maneuvers eventually, especially if you're boosting properly and close behind someone.

Also it can shrug off a few rocket/cannon hits at 100% armor before blowing up, if you do happen to get hit.
