What open world game that's not made by Rockstar in your opinion can compete with GTA

Before it became stupid sci fi comedy sh*t I'd say the first couple Saints Row games. Games like Mafia, Sleeping Dogs, Watch Dogs etc are just too niche to provide a similar experience to a GTA game.

However Saints Row and Saints Row 2 were (are) pretty decent alternatives IMO.

Personally, I thought the Scarface game was better than VC or SA. It was fun buying cars, having them delivered by your personal driver, pimping out your mansion, and buying and selling drugs. The Montana one liners were also hilarious as hell. I wish they would make another one.

I've always liked the Mafia and Driver games, though they can't compete with GTA.

Saints Row 3 is a joke compared to GTA. I've had 45 hrs SR3 played but can't compare it to GTA.

Can't say there is. Most other Open-World games nowadays have specific concepts. Mafia themes, Hacker themes, Assassin themes, etc. where as GTA is the jack-of-all-trades open-world game.

Of course it's a joke. The Saints Row series has been satire. It's breaks the forth wall and has over-the-top content because it's mocking the very foundations the video game industry was built on. It knows it's a video game, and it accepts that.

The Watch_Dogs series, specially W_D2 had a great potential to compete with GTA with an unique concept, if it wasn't for the many glitches, uninteresting story, flawed advertisement and stupid paywalls. I enjoyed a lot the hacking online minigame and most gamemodes. Hacking personal cameras was also pretty fun.

The Getaway was pretty good, almost could go toe-to-toe with the grittiness and realism of IV (maybe even moreso because it wasn't all about DA SATIRE XD)  if it was even more open world and sh*t. Shame the third one never happened tho, although for an open world game it's depressingly underrated.

If only every open-world satirical video game was like that these days. A lot of video game developers are taking themselves too seriously, if you ask me.

Saints row 2 is by far the most serious competition GTA had back in 2008 going head to head with GTA IV(in my opinion is the best GTA).Even though Saints row 2 had a sh*ttier pc port than GTA IV

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven is the most serious competition for every single GTA title apart from GTA IV. For me Mafia: TCOLH is just as amazing experience as GTA IV.

Sadly Mafia:TCOLH is underrated and not known by most people and the franchise got ruined with Mafia III.

First two Mafia games were great.I haven't played the third game since I've seen a lot of people complain about it (repetitive missions, many glitches, the protagonist being more like a mobster killing vigilante than a real mobster...).

While I haven't played any Driver games since I played on PS1,I remember Driver 2 was very good back then (I've seen a few videos on youtube, now it looks very outdated, but is probably still fun).I don't know much about newer Driver games.

I never played any Saint's Row games, but I've heard the early ones were good.I've heard Scarface game and The Godfather game were good too.

I'd say the only game that was able to compete with GTA was Mafia 1. Since then, nothing has ever come close.

Mafia 1 was okay imo, but not enough to compete with GTA.
True Crime NYC was definitely worth a playthrough. It had a lot of annoying bugs and it felt so childish when compared to any GTA game but that was the only time I saw a bit of originality in a GTA clone.
Watch Dogs sucks. Saints Row sucks. Sleeping Dogs feels unfinished. Just Cause is weird.
Nothing comes close really.

True Crime NYC is definitely one of the more underrated games. It had a surprisingly good representation of Manhattan and was way better than SOLA.
