Can't say which one is better. If I had to play today I would pick GTA IV.

A part of me thinks this is one of the most controversial debates in the GTA community, the topic of SA vs. IV.

IV is my favorite game, probably of all time, but I've really warmed up to SA and learned to love it as well.

~~

Story - IV has the best story of all IMO. But I, unlike many people also enjoyed SA's storyline.

Graphics - you're comparing a 2008 game to a 2004 game. Same goes for physics, incomparable.

Map - IV's is more detailed and accurate, and SA's is more diverse. Take your pick. IMO both are great, they both capture the atmosphere of the real life locations quite well.

Side things - SA has more, and there is so much do do. IV doesn't have as much, but the stuff that it does have is done really well and is more fleshed out IMO.

GTA IV. I like the map, characters and customisation in San Andreas, but everything else I disliked (as in silly and nonsense content) was thrown out of the window and GTA IV started with a clean and fresh slate which I enjoy more tenfold.

IV by a mile in my opinion. San Andreas was great in its time and I really enjoyed it, despite the technical limitations, but IV took GTA series to another level, with its storyline, characters, physics and overall experience.

IV

Superior narrative script & characters

A vastly more atmospheric location

Better Side Missions (fixer missions & improved vigilante missions > anything In San Andreas)

Vastly improved driving & gunplay.

San Andreas does have more content no doubt about that, but a lot of that so called great content, I have always found to be overrated & far from a necessity.

Core gameplay is more important to me and that's why GTA IV obliterates San Andreas.

It's hard going back to playing San Andreas with its sh*tty shooting mechanics, driving, annoying micromanagement etc.

Having "more things to do" is pointless when the majority of it isn't that interesting anyway. When I think of San Andreas the adage of wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle comes to mind.

Wouldn't that put San Andreas above Vice City on your GTA ranking list then? :p

From story side i find both of them equal, they did good job portraying crime life.

Somewhat GTA SA characters are more memorable for me cuz of the uniqueness of each characters.

Starting from the game CJ were introduced to gangster friends, then later in the game he met weird hippie The Truth, Zero the nerd, Woozie the Triad businessman, Toreno the Government agent, Maccer & Kent the music industry dudes and the Italian Mafias. The game actually convinces you that "the world is bigger out there" from CJ's perspective and that what's make the characters more colorful.

Storywise, GTA IV is more realistic and humanly. I can imagine some events of GTA IV happening in real life & heart touching (watch "Rigged to blow" mission cutscene one of the best scene in IV) and i actually feel the affection for Niko & Roman Bellic as they struggle for american dream in the harsh Liberty City.

Gameplay? Hard decision, but with the dated mechanic of SA i'd prefer IV

Well both are great games but sa has many things that shouldn't have. I mean many side activities are not necessary and pointless. Story started good then it become repetitive when we left los santos. I like sa but I think I prefer 4.

I love both a lot, but I love IV a bit more. Vice City comes as a close 3rd.

Somewhat a hard decision, but since I already played SA since 2005 which I find a bit boring today, I would choose IV

I really hate GTA IV, my least favorite. Maybe because I have only played it on PC and I still haven't finished the story (I have started this week). The only reason I hated it this long is it's bad optimization. Really, nothing else. Crashes before I can even save the game (by the time I finish the game, I can say I have completed it 3 times, as I completed most of the missions more than 3 times), lower fps then I get in GTA V, and I hated it's driving mechanics at first but now I can say it's maybe even more fun than other GTA games. So maybe this'll be one of my favorites when I finish the game, who knows.

I hated San Andreas before I finished it too. It was my second least favorite (after GTA IV of course) but now it's my 3rd or 4th favorite.

I had too many good memories with SA. The fun I had with the story/single player and then with SA-MP have not been topped by any other game to this day.

IV is an amazing game and (along with EFLC) my second favorite but SA is SA.

IV is my favourite followed by San Andreas, gold and silver, ain't no losers there. Both have a lot going for them, IV has a great story, gameplay, atmosphere, with a densely packed map. San Andreas has the best map, lots of features, multiple safehouses, fighting styles, minigames etc. Great cheats too.

I don't see how IV and SA can be compared.

My choice is clear: GTA San Andreas. I love the overall style of this game. Pure awesomeness.

And everything from gameplay to radio is perfect.

If you say that GTAIV or V is better then you are f*cking deluded.

i think 4 is better. the story is very good and its realistic. compared to gta sa story. i mean come on one man breaking into a heavily armed military base and succesfully stealing a piece of high tech equipment that he has no prior knowledge of how to use it. and getting away? yea right. anyway i loved nikos story and the characters that were in it. sure gta sa had some good interesting characters. but i feel like gta 4s characters were better. both maps were very good. i loved liberty city and alderney. and i also like san andreas. it is very diverse. you have 3 big cities. a big countryside with small towns mixed in. and then you have a big desert. its awesome. in terms of gameplay gta 4 had better more realistic gameplay. but of course thats because of the realistic approach they took to make the game. in terms of stuff to do and minigames/side missions. i have to give it to san andreas. it has plenty of stuff to do after the main story. gta 4 on the other hand did not have as much. there were a few minigames and side stuff but not as much as sa. but i will say i love the random character missions. those were great. and the last thing is multiplayer. of course san andreas has no official multiplayer like 4 has. i know it has samp and mta. but its only for pc. i do wish san andreas had an actual multiplayer like 4. i would only imagine how fun it would be.  gta 4s multiplayer was simple but very fun. i remember spending hours in just one free mode session all the time. back in its prime. unfortunately there are a lot of modders now that it ruined it. not to mention most people are playing gta online. just think if gta sa had a multiplayer similar to gta 4s it would be amazing. playing in a huge map. with all those vehicles and fun things to do. i can see why samp is popular. so in the end i thing gta 4 is better. but i also think san andreas is a great game too. i also have more memories with gta 4 too. i have beaten the story more times than i can count. all the great time i had in multiplayer. i made some great friends too. to me it is just more memorable to me. but for sa i dont have as many memories. i only beat the story a few times. i also never had it as long as i had 4.

CJ has passed the flying school. It's not that hard for him to fly a jetpack when he has already experienced how to fly planes, helicopters, etc in the school.

The jetpack was only meant as a spoof on Area 51. Just like the spoof in GTA IV about the increasing terrorist activities in the city. The player isn't allowed to enter the runway of the airport without getting the wanted stars. How is that realistic? A lot of restrictions/freedom is taken away from the player in GTA IV.

At least, in GTA SA, you are having fun by participating in missions like Green Goo and Black Project, and even then the game provides enough reasoning to avoid being perceived as wholly bizarre or unrealistic, unlike in GTA IV, Niko goes after the the innocent pigeons, killing them for what? It doesn't make sense since the game doesn't provide good enough reason for him to kill those innocent birds for just spawning an Annihilator.

Realistically speaking, what does pigeons have to do with unlocking of the police helicopter?

It works both ways to be honest. Realistically speaking what does tags, photos and golden horseshoes have to do with unlocking various weapons hovering in the house, garage and casino.

Not everything in the game has to be realistic, sometimes it's just there to provide fun to the player. Despite many opinions how GTA IV is realistic I don't perceive it as such. Sure story and characters and much more ground based that in the previous games, but it's not that realistic at all.
