WTF is this Cloudflare shiz?

Best Answer Tank, 12 July 2017 - 12:35 PM

We purposely added the dialog to GTAF as our way of supporting Net Neutrality.

Whilst I understand it's an annoyance, that's the point of it. If we were living in a time without NN, things would be a lot more annoying - such as the site being blocked unless you pay a monthly fee to your ISP, as well as slow loading pages, just to name a few.

In addition to your ISP being able to introduce fees, throttles and data caps while accessing our sites, we would also have to pay a lot more for the bandwidth needed to serve the sites in it's current form.

We simply wouldn't be able to afford it. It would almost certainly mean the beginning of the end for independent forums and sites like ours.

So as of today I keep getting this pop-up but only on gtaf...

http://imgur.com/ZxlkSjw

Not sure if it's at my end as I've done a virus scan etc or does gta forums use cloudflare? I gather it's for a good cause & all that and I can easily close it but it's starting to get on my tits as it pops up on any topic I click on.

Was wondering if anyone else is getting it or knows a fix.

Cheers

Edit: Btw, I'm using Chrome and have Adblock Plus installed which works except for this particular pop-up.

It's happening on all CloudFare based websites. It's a little invasive I agree, and they could have chosen a much better way to garner support for the cause. As far as I know there's nothing the GTAF staff can do about it.

Same here on Firefox, tbh I was really concerned seeing something about the ISP because the popup appears in English...

Seems it's cloudflare's way of getting people to know about net neutrality.

Reddit is doing something similar, but less annoying,(also far less noticeable)

BsIeYDu.png

(also, as a Canadian, reddit's thing is laughable cause I already had that happen to me. Just instead of a hard limit, they charged me extra for every gig I went over)

I was just about to rant about it too. I'm not even a US citizen goddamnit, how the hell am I suppossed to support this anyways? That thing looks like a virus popup so I checked other websites as well. It appears every 1-2 clicks I do on the forum on my phone. I understand if GTAF can't do anything about it though..

The funny thing is, it's about protecting websites so we can continue to visit them blah blah but it actually makes me want to stop visiting this place already (not really). I'm not giving them my personal information.

Edit: seems to be gone if you close it a couple times?

I'm all for supporting net neutrality but you think they'd only deliver it to US visitors given it's completely irrelevant to the rest of us.

You'll go to write a post about it, but won't even read it?

Take a step back and read it, maybe you'll grasp for just a little second why it's there.

Everytime I click on something, so like everytime I go on a new topic, my profile etc.

Thank god I have a sh*t basic phone so I never get this, or any other popup ever. My phone also keeps ads from loading on about 99% of the sites that I visit, including here.

I mean, sure, support your thing, but maybe put it above the page instead of in front? It scared the crap out of me, I scanned my entire computer looking for a virus after this one, then I tought AdBlock went bezerk.

Also, here ISPs can do that (block sites and stuff, but most don't bother), that's also why I got double-scared (Thanks, Internet Constitution (Yep, that's a thing here...)).

I'm all for net neutrality, but isn't there a better way to protest than having a huge popup that looks like some phishing scam?

I unno, when it popped up, I read it and that kinda tells you all you need to know about what it is...while it would be nice to be a little less annoying, as EmSixTeen said that's the point - and it's only for a day :santa:

Appears everytime I clear my tablet history. At least it's not fake. Once I was googling random crap and I got a pop-up accusing me of looking at child porn and my picture had already been taken. Knew it was fake.

I wasn't looking at porn.....honest.
