Why are banned account profiles inaccessible?

Best Answer ~Tiger~, A week ago

the profile page can't be accessed and it's details (like contacts or bios) are lost.

According to the IPB help pages, when a member is permanently banned, the Forum software automatically severs the link to their profile to prevent the member from benefiting from an online presence on the forum. This means that their profile cannot be seen by search bots (google etc) that would be able to access links in the members profile. This is particularly important if that member knew they faced a ban and posted links in their profile that violated google's terms (porn or gore etc). By severing the profile link, the profile is inaccessible to search bots but they can continue to crawl the rest of the forum unhindered.

Senior staff members are still able to access the banned members profile but not regular members or search bots.

This should be the case for even non-banned users. I don't want bots crawling my profile :/.

Pretty sure web crawlers can't access people's profiles since that's one of the features only accessible to those with an account - if you try looking for people's profiles on google for example, there aren't any results that are the actual profile.

Generally as far as I know it's just meant to remove their presence from the forum, even if they're allowed back since they have to create a new profile from scratch.

Authorised bots are treated by the forum software in the same way as human members and they have the same access. This is why their names (google, bing, facebook etc) appear at the bottom of the forum with other member users.

Search engines just get a 403 I think, by default ipb treats crawlers like guests, but only Tank can confirm the settings we're using.

They appear on the online list but they are not a part of the Members group, nor they're a part of the Members permission mask. I think IPB by default has a group called Web Crawlers and they're using the Guest permission mask.

Be that as it may, the reason IPB gives for the question asked by the OP is the one given in my answer above.

I can't even find an option to allow/disallow it, it seems part of IPB by default, so yeah I guess all of the above answered your question in a round about way. Who is it you want to be nosey on that made you ask?

Nobody in particular, just had been wondering for a while.

I'd like to take this time to let everybody know about my sale - I will take a screenshot of any banned profile for just £20, just send the money direct to my PayPal along with the name of the member in question.

IPB disabled the option to view banned Profiles with the 3.x.x series of upgrades. It's a bad move TBH and most people didn't care since IPB is mostly used on large communities where banned profiles are sort of insignificant. There's no option to toggle the permission to view banned profiles sadly.
