Yes, I know, I know.   The GTA World has had fake brand names and car models for a long long time, going back to GTA 3.  The "Banshee", the "Bullet",  etc.......

but I think it's time, at least for -1- GTA, to drop that stuff and include REAL cars and brand names.  Why do games like Gran Tourismo and Forza Motorsport have real cars from real manufacturers, but Grand Theft AUTO can't?

I think GTA Next should be all about the love of Cars. Driving them. Modding them. Boosting them. Etc.....

I think GTA Next should get real car manufacturers and allow Rockstar to use REAL classic and modern cars.  Imagine stealing an modding/upgrading an authentic classic Shelby Mustang, or an 1980s Lamborghini Countach, or a Bugatti Chiron.   You're driving around the city, and you feel like it's real life, because you recognize all these REAL cars.

And I think the storyline of GTA Next should be similar to the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds" starring Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie.   The main protagonist should be car boosters.  Criminals who commit Grand Theft Auto every day.  They boost cars from all over for the mafia, for rich people, for everyone.  They also race cars, and there should be a legit race track on the map somewhere, where you can gamble on yourself to win money.

The whole storyline should be Car Porn.  An appreciation and love of Cars, mixed in with violence.  Sure, the car boosters could also be a "Transporter" for some missions, and deliver packages/drugs whatever......  but their main business is finding and stealing cars.  They love cars, they love racing cars, modding cars, and driving them.

And all of the cars would be REAL car models from our real world.

I think this would be an amazing change for GTA Next.

Implementing real brand names aren't as easy as they sound. There are licensing and copyright issues to be reckoned with as well as the fact that car companies wouldn't necessarily want to feature their vehicle in a crime simulator. Moreover, the money rockstar would have to pay the companies to feature their vehicle in GTA would honestly be better spent on other things such as music, physics, voice acting etc.

That aside, GTA's fictional brands are a near-perfect way of combating the handicap of using vehicles that translate well to ones you see in real life without featuring the real life ones themselves. Every GTA fan has come to recognise an Infernus as a Lambo (to the point some fans got mad when it was based off the NSX in SA), the words Vapid Stanier instantly projects images of Ford Crown Victorias and all the Taxis and Police Cruisers that they so prominently form, and while they changed it in V the Cheetah is still best remembered as a Ferrari Testarossa stand-in thanks to the 3D era games. It has gotten to the point where changing this model to a real-life based one would be like changing a key part of the GTA experience, and I doubt that's something GTA really needs.

The difference between having your Mercedes E190 in a game like Forza and GTA is that in Forza, you aren't mowing down "innocent" pedestrians with blood splattered all over the car. Having your brand attached to a game where blowing up cars and mowing people over are a staple and daily occurrence in the game possibly not good for PR/business. Especially to those that deplore video-game violence. Same reason you can't really hit pedestrians in Midnight Club, a game that does have real manufacturers.

Renaming car brands avoids legal and copyright issues etc. Also, I'm sure some car manufacturers appreciate Rockstar knocking off their cars because it's more exposure for them, it also must be flattering for a manufacturer to be included in one of the biggest entertainment media series of all time. However, for those boycotting, easily offended people that would complain that BMW or Ferrari allows their cars to take part in a game like GTA they don't have a leg to stand on, because there is no BMW or Ferrari in GTA ;)

Manufacturers not suing Rockstar for using the likeness of their designs could quite possibly be like the can of beer in the brown paper bag scenario. "The corner is a poor man's lounge.." They can't arrest every man on the corner drinking a can of beer, even if it is illegal on the streets. A brown paper bag covering the can of beer allowed the cops to turn a blind eye and get on with doing real police work..  Point being, is that the manufacturers know Rockstar are making blatant rip-off's of their cars but not using the real names absolves the car manufacturers from being blamed that their cars are being used to kill pedestrians in videogames and Rockstar doesn't have to buy licencing to use the real likeness and car manufacturers still get exposure. It's win win for everyone.

Although I'm purely speculating and spitballin' here, or just talking out my ass, lol. I wonder if car manufacturers could initiate legal proceedings for use of the car's likeness in GTA. I'm thinking they can and chose not to.

I swear to god I see this topic pop up every month or so about HEY WHY CANT GTA HAVE REAL CARS!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! and there's literally no reason as to why they should be added or what they would contribute that the cars GTA already has other than BUT FORZA AND NEED FOR SPEED DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

If you want real cars so much, go play the games you mentioned and let us who enjoy fake cars have them in GTA. After all, you don't see anyone going to Forza forums asking them to have fake cars in the next game.

Even if Rockstar and Take-Two asked for permission, most car manufacturers would deny such requests and would sue the living hell outta the Housers if they used the likeness of their vehicles in

any capacity. Though I wonder why modders aren't getting sued when there's a lot of videos on YouTube showing off modded real-life vehicles in every GTA since III.

Besides, I love the fictional vehicles and manufacturers Rockstar cooked up for the games. I'd play Need for Speed or an arcade racing machine if I wanted to drive real-life vehicles in a video game.

Nope. The fictional cars in GTA look great and they should stay as they are.

I very much prefer the fictional counterparts of real cars created by Rockstar for GTA, it perfectly compliments the fictional nature of the in-game world itself. The same goes for fictional commercial products and brand names in the in-game world too. If everything was 'real' in the GTA environment, it wouldn't really feel like the game it is supposed to be - a fictional world.

If you so badly want real cars, get GTA on PC and mod it.

Apart from the obvious legal issues it would cause it would take away a lot of that unique factor GTA has. If I wanted to drive BMWs, Ferraris, Fords, Toyotas etc I would play Gran Turismo or Forza.

I like how vehicles share a strong resemblance to what they're based on, but still have fictitious flavour where some are even amalgamations of several models into one.

Because making fun of real life brands and the cars themselves is funny in a R* kinda way. They love their satire, those guys.

Simple.

And because of legal reasons, unfortunately smh.

Even without the legal restrictions i'd still support the fictional cars, they're a staple of the series (and it's really only the name that is fictional at this point, they look so close to the real cars now).

Because driving video games =/= crime video games. I'm pretty sure none producer would like to see his car destroyed, burned down or used as a bomb. Also, GTA is about parodying the world we're living in.

If you have real cars you might as well have a real city too then it wouldn't be GTA any longer.  Plus it would be too expensive for even Rockstar to try and pay off all of those car companies for their licenses along with the 7 Elevens, Burger Kings, McDonalds, etc.

With that said the game could and already technically does have car boosting in it so Rockstar could still put such a storyline similar to Gone in 60 seconds in without making the change.

If anything though they should give us ability to build our own cars from scratch then maybe you could put the real car names on your design without dealing with the companies.

I think we all, Rockstar included, would love real car models. Unfortunately all the car companies are all f*cking pussies who are too scared to ever let their sacred Brand be tarnished by appearing in such a game.

I honestly I wouldn't want it.

I've modded all my GTAs on PC, and even though there are a ton of mods to convert all in-game cars to real life models, I've never once touched the in-game cars to mod, I've left them all as default, original models. The fictitious nature of the cars in GTA give them their unique identity and further consolidate the feeling of GTA's fictional world overall, which I really like. Los Santos may look like LA, but it's not LA, it's a fictional recreation of LA - therefore it only makes sense that everything else within that world is a fictional representation of it's real-life counterpart. On top of that, the default cars in GTA generally look really good and very identical to their real-life counterparts, especially in V - I don't see why anyone would wanna change them anyway.

I hope you never become the CEO of a gaming company.

People pointed out this a lot already, but this was a very very dumb idea and I have nothing better to do, so here's why not again:

  • Any real-life company has tons of copyright restricting them from being used in anything without their proper permission. If you do so, they can sue you for millions of dollars.
  • No real company would want their brand associated with a game like GTA, with drugs, weapons, violence, etc. This can really hurt the companie's reputation. Some sompanies don't even allow their vehicles to get dirty in games, let alone damaged or destroyed.
  • GTA already has a lore of its own, where it can parody real-life companies. No company ever would put their slogan as "Manufacturer of over-sized, eco-unfriendly vehicles designed for heavy-duty commercial use but mostly driven by soccer moms and drug dealers in busy city centers" on their stock-exchange page.
  • Just imagine the in-game commercials. If I wanted a Ford commercial, i'd turn off my AdBlock.

HD Era SP games have the best fictional cars in the series, say what you want about R* but the way they mash cars together feels so good, other open world games don't compete, Saints Row and Watch Dogs have really good cars but would feel out of place in GTA.

Time for Rockstar to file bankruptcy thanks to you BioVirus! Rockstar will far from profit from purchasing rights to have real cars in the game. It's not worth licensing every car manufacturer that ever existed over a game that has a life span of 3 years. With your logic, we might as well have real life advertising brands. Replace eCola with Coke.

OK, let's go:
- First, the whole copyright and stuff everyone mentioned. Sure, R* has been sued and blamed lots of times for either violent games (Manhunt, Bully, GTA) or annoying activists (Jack Thompson) or celebrities (the Lindsay Lohan/Lacey Jonas case) or moralist people (The GTA V ban in Australia stores), but the car manufacturers have the power needed to bankrupt R* for once and for all.
- Second, like the one above me said, why not make all things real then? Replace EyeFind with Google, eCola with Coke, Sprunk with Sprite, Vom Feuer with Smith and Wesson, ProLaps with Adidas, Burger Shot with Burger King, Cluckin' Bell with KFC, Bean Machine with Starbucks, etc.
- Third, the cars already existent are fine as they are, and I actually prefer it so we can have cars at our leisure to do as we want with them.
- Fourth, this is a CRIME SIMULATOR. Not a RACING GAME. Even some racing games don't have real cars (Split/Second, Blur, Burnout Paradise), so why blame GTA?

Basically, there is many reasons why your idea does not work.

I actually dislike these mods which replace the in-game brands and models by real life equivalents. It takes the parody and satire out of the game, which GTA is all about; Making fun of everybody, from mafias to car brands.

I know it's called Grand Theft Auto, but some people really get obsessed with the auto bit of the name. Fact is, ever since the first game, the series has always been about blowing sh*t up and doing story missions that allow you access to more things to blow sh*t up with. There's sometimes a bit where you steal a car, but it's mostly about shooting guns and making things go boom.

GTA was always about fictitious vehicles, and it just won't feel right if all of a sudden all the vehicles would be real cars. I think it would be better for Rockstar to keep their own brand of vehicles. They just have to make vehicle handling more sophisticated and less arcadey. The other thing they have to do is have proper brand names for their vehicles; some of the brand names are fine but others with names like ' ubernacht' and 'dewbauchee' are totally lame.

I just noticed this post now, so there's another comment about how this does not work:
- Imagine you're a brand owner, a strong one like Ferrari, Lamborghini or Mercedes-Benz. You need good publishing to get your brand known and buyed otherwise you lose money, right? OK, then imagine some game uses your poster car in a mission that involves large quantity of violence. People won't like that, the publishing will get ripped apart, you lose money and get bankrupt. The game producer will be known as the one who destroyed your brand. Or, you can sue the producer of the game and hope to win... possibly destroying the hope of many gamers alike to play a sequence as there's money rolling on these business. Your brand will be known as the one who did it.
- Resuming: Everyone gets screwed one way or other. So, not a good situation.

Yeah, this is a distinct impossibility. If you owned a car brand, would you really want to be associated crime and chrome paint?

Additionally, I wouldn't like it. The auto manufacturers in the game are fictitious companies, based on real life counterparts. This allows rockstar to parody them without consequence.

I like the fake cars some look even better than the originals in my opinion. But it`s all a thing of the own taste.

Progen T20 looks better than McLaren P1

Imponte Dukes looks better than Dodge Charger

Dinka Jester looks better than Honda or Acura NSX

List could go on and on.

I miss the classic Mustang tho. It would be nice to be able to use modded car models in the online mode if it`s just optical tuning. Really would like to have the real Audi R8 instead of the Obey 9F and a real Porsche 911 instead of the Pfister Comet. Im playing Forza Horizon 3 at the moment to satisfy my need for real cars. :D

I remember part of the reason the live-action Transformers movies changed Bumblebee from a VW Beetle to a Camaro was because Volkswagen didn't want their car to be featured as a combat vehicle in a violent war movie, even a PG-13 one. (Understandable, given how antsy they get over their company's origin.) They, and other automakers, would probably be even less thrilled to license their cars to be used as murder weapons and then blown up in a notoriously M-rated video game franchise. Remember, it's only very recently that racing games featuring licensed cars were even able to feature realistic damage; that was a major selling point of Forza Motorsport when it first came out.

What's the point in rockstar trying to get real cars, I doubt they'd allow rockstar to take the piss out of them and their products in a popular video game.
I love all the comedy and fun little parodies added into the game, using real products would just give rockstar more lawsuits and they have had lawsuits from cop killer simulator to Lindsay Lohan.
