After having bought GTAV over a year ago on my Steam account and playing it almost 1,000 hours, I had my access "revoked" by Rockstar. I can't even launch into single player without being prompted to enter a new game key. Entering the old key obviously doesn't work as expected and when I contacted support I got this.

Thank you for contacting Rockstar Support.

Sorry to hear that you’re having a problem accessing GTAV. We have reviewed your account and the Rockstar Activation Code was disabled at the request of a third-party retailer due to an issue with your payment. Please contact the Customer Support of the retailer where you purchased GTAV to resolve the payment issue, and then let us know if there are any further problems accessing the game.

Kind Regards,

Austin C.
Rockstar Support

Considering I bought the game from Steam, I call BS on this. There was no problem with the payment and again I bought the game over a year ago. If there was any problem with that, Steam would have notified me. This is a new low lol.

Maybe before discounting that it's not possible, you should try asking Steam instead?

I can totally see Rockstar doing this, but try asking Steam in-case and see their response, if they replied that they didn't issue a revoke against your key then you have ammunition to fire back at Rockstar and they'll have to retaliate.

Talk to steam as rockstar will not help at all until you go through the proper channels and talk to steam first.

That really sucks sry to hear. Im kinda shocked this was possible....damn we really don't own these games now even when we buy it

nope, there has to be some mistake, legaly they can only revoke/limit your access to the online portion of the game not the story mode.

if there is a problem with the payment why would they let you play any part of the game at all?

if this was a key bought on G2A i wouldnt be surprised at all, since most of the keys sold there are sold by other players.

if not and i am wrong then its a real sh*tty move from Rockstar or Steam

OP needs to do as already suggested and contact Steam.  Anything else (literally anything else) is a pointless waste of time.

i know that, im just saying under normal circumstances, R* can only revoke access to gtao.

but here the problem seem to be with the key, which is a different ballgame.

"Sorry, but this is a problem with Steam, not Rockstar. Ask Steam."

"REEEEEEEEEEEE COCKSTAR STOLE MY GAME"

It pays to actually read customer support responses, even if they're canned copy-paste.

Check with the distribution company, which I would assume is Valve.

Dunno how but it randomly started working again w/o contacting support, maybe R* did something or it was just some glitch.

Considering OP is talking about a key, he most likely purchased it off one of those scumbag sites like G2A and the key was reported as bought with a stolen credit card and therefore they key became disabled.

GTA V never once asked me for a key when I bought it off steam.

Unfortunately I can see op being passed back and forth. You'll just have to roll with it.

Tell steam what R* said, then tell R* what steam says.

Hopefully you eventually get it sorted.

Probably a bug. Restarting Steam (in offline and online) or verifying the game files could have done the trick.
Was pointless opening a separate thread for this.

Oh, and yeah, don't buy keys from G2A, kids.
