What is the technical reason for having to kill all the people in the

I've always wondered why exactly you have to kill all people in the gym to not get pulled down when going into the black void of the hidden interiors universe.

Believe it or not, I don't think we know why even now. It's been a long time since I've studied it so there's possibly new information regarding why you have to kill everybody first, but to my knowledge nobody really knows. If I had to take an absolute wild stab in the dark I'd say it has something to do with how the AI works in interiors, because your jaunt to "heaven" is cut dramatically short should you leave them alive. By killing them, you remove a height limit somehow and this allows you to pass through the barrier. I say this because most of the game's interiors (if not all) are stored way up high on the map. That's only a guess though.
