Currently, the :) looks mocking, apologetic, sad, or whatever the context is. Remove those sad eyebrows for a happy smile! :D

The smiley button is a good example of a neutral/positive smile

Those two smiles look too laughy, too over the top.  I vote for no change.

Umm.. well I never really liked that smiley. Always sucked and looks pathetic cause of the eyebrows. I'm not sure thats worth changing though.

What's wrong with that Happy Grin?

I think it's an unneeded change.

It's all about context. If you're going to use it after something patronising, of course it's going to come across as smarmy. On the other hand, I've seen genuinely nice comments that host our little yellow friend and I don't pick a bad vibe up from it. Unfortunately, you can't change what people say and it's just as tricky to "unsee" something you've associated a certain way for so long. I wouldn't say we need a change.

Perspective is key! :)

Its just about personal preferences. I guess some people don't see anything wrong with it and others do. To me it always looked like the face is sad as well as happy. The eyebrows are making the facial expression look different (Like adding another emotion to it). Most happy smilies don't have eyebrows for that reason. It reminds me of a sad puppy looking at you.

Eyebrows make a huge different in the facial expression. If they were high from the outside and low from the inside. That smiley would look like an evil grin.

Agree with OP.Cover eyebrows with your finger and you'll see it becomes happier.

Currently there are no plans to replace the emoticons, at least there isn't to my knowledge. If you feel uncomfortable for some reason, use an alternate image to convey your true happiness. I personally like this picture of a monk holding a beer.
