A truck has hit a large group of people in Nice, France at a fireworks show. There are 73 confirmed deaths.

Eyewitness reports suggest that gunfire was exchanged between Police and the driver. Earlier reports of a hostage situation are unsubstantiated, say the French Interior Minister.

If you are in the area, remain indoors. Do not use the mobile telephone network except for essential communications - use WiFi where possible.

Updates & Confirmation (As of 15/07/2016, 19:12 GMT+0)

  • 84 confirmed dead, including children. 100+ currently injured.
  • Attacker is dead after being shot by French police. Early reports mention two attackers, although this has not been confirmed and is very unlikely at this point.
  • Truck drove through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day (Independence Day in France) before driver stopped, got out and shot at civilians and police.
  • Early reports of smoke near the Eiffel Tower. This has nothing to do with the attack, was simply an accident with fireworks.
  • Reports suggest that the terrorist was a 31-year-old from Nice with Tunisian origins.
  • Truck had weapons and grenades inside.
  • Truck was a rental vehicle.

Unconfirmed (As of 15/07/2016, 03:50 GMT+0)

  • Unconfirmed reports that the truck drove through the crowd for possibly 2-3 miles at about 25-30mph before stopping.
  • Unconfirmed reports of a hostage situation in the Meridien and Negresco hotels, unlikely at this point.
  • Unconfirmed reports that the driver of the truck shot out the windows as he drove through the crowd.

A horrid inevitability in today's world.

May the victims find peace, their families solace and all terrorists found and brought to justice.

Typhus, I see you reading this thread. Please, please do not demean this incident or its victims.

RIP, unfortunately yet again, to the victims of terrorism in France.

I just saw this on the news. Yet another foolish act terrorising innocents. I hope all this ends very soon.

Europe needs to learn from Israel's reality during the Second Intifada and its current security measures.

Terrible. Absolutely terrible.

Unfortunately, many people seem to be reacting to this attack exactly as the perpetrators would want them to.

In what way? I'm angry that people have been senselessly butchered and that terror has enmeshed itself in Europe's reality. Security measures need to be hugely stepped up across Europe.

For someone looking to kill as many people as possible getting hold of a truck and driving into a crowd would be something one could do quite easily. Surprised it hasn't done before, at least to this extent.

Wait until the media starts the blame game...

That's not really relevant at this point.

No respects paid in your comment, just moaning about media, because the media output should be the main focus here, obviously.

R.I.P to all the victims.

E - There is no need for the 'blame game' when the perpetrator has been caught/killed. Such a bloody ignorant comment. Sorry mods etc, I won't say anymore.

Trucks arent that manouvrable though...depending on the location and size of the truck the only way the driver made so many victims might be because of him having a firearm

Ban all big trucks! Make only the police be able to use them!

But seriously, is there anything about the driver and the reason why he did it?

In what way?

In the "DAE religion of peace????" kind of way, which does nothing but alienate Muslims who find this sh*t just as deplorable as anyone else. What we're dealing with here is a political ideology steeped in religious rhetoric.

Why? Was this attack somehow special? Did you know someone who died?

I'm sorry, but don't start covering yourself in ashes or wailing in the streets just yet. A guy drove a truck into some people. It means nothing, it accomplishes nothing. And you can get as hysterical as you want, but tell me, hand on heart, if you'll still care a week from now?

Nothing as of yet, from what I've seen, but given the motives behind the last couple of attacks against France of this magnitude, I'd be extremely surprised if this isn't Islamist-related.

truck bombs have been used in terrorist attacks for a long time though, right?

in metropolitan areas as well as Iraq and Afghanistan. they don't always explode as intended but they armor them up and roll them into bases like a trojan horse.

otherwise yeah, this is probably the highest death toll by far.

Hysterical? There wasn't any hysteria in the post you quoted. And to answer your question, yes. The images of the aftermath of that concert hall last year is still something I think about. And not just because of this latest sickening act.

Poor you.

Hey, I see #PrayForNice is trending on Twitter. That right there's the surefire way to show the terrorists who's boss: Publicly mewling about how sad everything is. Maybe you should give it a go? Might get a few new followers.

Typhus, I understand the attitude as these attacks become commonplace, but I have French friends who are becoming increasingly scared of being in their own country due to attacks like this and increasing anti-Semitism. Friends of mine knew people injured in the Paris shootings.

Just because these attacks are frequent now doesn't mean they don't impact us. Same goes for attacks in Israel--Hallel Yaffa Ariel isn't going to be forgotten just because she's one of many to die in terror attacks recently.

Oh, please. It flew out the window the moment this thread was started.

But, just to hedge my bets, let's see if I can't predict how this'll go:

 - Someone will blame Islam or Muslims.

 - People will defend Islam and Muslims.

 - They'll argue for about 13 pages.

 - Someone will close the thread.

Sound about right?

I mean Typhus may be an insensitive dick as usual but he has a point. Everyone is going to change their profile pictures and tweet #PrayForNice #France #Steakfrites and then a week from now forget about it. Nobody is going to take any steps to actually deal with terrorism, the French and continental Europeans, namely the Belgians and the Dutch won't fix their broken intelligence services, and we go back to normal until another terrorist strike happens within the month.

That's very sad but true. It doesn't mean people are insincere when they express sympathy and goes back to my earlier point about Europe sucking it up and learning from Israel.

Or people can blame Islamists - which, again, I'd be very surprised if this wasn't the outcome, but I still may be wrong - and people can defend Islamists, for which they'd be rightfully ridiculed.

It seems with your attitude, we just brush this sort of thing under the carpet and move on, simply because social media attention-seeking parasites will change their profile picture, or whatever it is they do to farm "followers".
