Dave Mirra killed himself. I'm way more bummed about it than I'd think I'd be. I was never a BMX guy, I was a full on skateboarder as a kid, but as a skateboarder you form a uneasy alliance with the other skatepark demographics.

This also entailed watching X-games, or what ever was on Fuel before it became all UFC all the time.

And of course I played Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX a sh*t ton, I would always play as Dave.

Wow... a suicide too.

RIP Mirra.

Thanks for sharing dY. I was thinking of getting back to the track after a winter break this weekend, definitely going to be there now.

It will be interesting to see the circumstances as the information becomes available, I find this hard to believe.

I was actually bummed out on the news also :/. I never cared much for BMX, but there are those few household names that everyone knows and follows to an extent, I guess you can say. He had a wife and two children, I'm sure he made a nice amount of money from his career and he accomplished fairly a lot in the world of BMX. It seems so random too, he was visiting friends in the area apparently and later killed himself. It's a shame, all in all :(

Damn, that's real rough. I was too young to really watch much of him in his prime, not to mention being in a skateboard environment because of my big brother, but we did know about Matt Hoffman and Dave Mirra. When I did get old enough to see what he did, I always wanted to pull stunts on my bike in my neighborhood... what those BMX guys did was just insane.

Still, suicide of all things... that's just no way to go. Rest in Peace Dave.

It's with great sadness I share this news of the passing of one of my heroes and an inspirational figure to many. I know a lot of the members here are close to my age so this might hit home with some of you.

Dave Mirra, you're a legend dude. Rest in peace.

I remember buying his BMX game on PS2 back in the day. Good times they were, but that's messed up he took his own life via gunshot.

R.I.P Dave.

Another of my heroes who just passed was Kelly McGarry, most known for the 70 foot canyon back flip at Redbull Rampage. He apparently suffered cardiac issues and died trailside while climbing.

RIP Kelly

I remembered him in DiRT 2 (although he has much better career in BMX than rally). I knew him before playing DiRT 2 though, even if I'm not played his BMX games.

Rest in peace.

May he ride peacefully through the course of heaven.

I'd use to play this game all the time on PSOne and use to always watch him on MTV. Sad.

It's a damn f*ckin shame, I might have ended up skating but this game is one of those that got me into that whole culture kinda thing with the first level jumping over the train and that song by The Cult. Terrible loss for the BMX community and "urban sports" or whatever you wanna call it too in general.

Still, suicide of all things... that's just no way to go.

of course not.

I'm gonna' elaborate on this...

it's like. are we surprised?

just look at the NFL and what happens to these guys after a short lifetime of numerous concussions and head injuries. Dave Mirra had as many concussions as any linebacker, probably much more. I'm afraid the autopsy results are simply going to show another brain turned to mush from CTE. a virtual dementia patient.

you know, I love me some violent action sports but maybe it's time to seriously reevaluate what we consider to be "entertainment" in this world. I'm pretty sure Dave would trade the fortune and the fame in order to live a long and healthy life alongside his wife and children. but they won't be the last family to suffer this tragedy and XGame Gold Medals (or Super Bowl rings) don't replace a father.

Personally I am not buying the CTE thing ATM...

Its all over the web and is a possibility but not a fact that it lead to his suicide. Let the dust settle, another reason may present itself or maybe like many suicides we may never know the real trigger and we will always be left asking why.

it's just a likely assumption given Dave Mirra's history.

we'll see what the autopsy says...

I still have my Mirra frame hanging in my basement, and I still use my Mirra forks on my BMX.

Rest in big air homie, depression can be a terrible thing, especially with injuries that keep you from doing what you love, I know this all too well.

It's sad to see another victim of CTE dying an early death. I'm not familiar with him (although recognize the name) and don't care for NFL either, but the subject of head injuries hits close to home as a wrestling fan who's favorite wrestler is Chris Benoit. What's done is done, but they have to be more cautious with concussions going forward, specially up and coming athletes who have not destroyed their brains yet but risking it by playing American football or other sports where the head is prone to taking hits.
