I guess Reagan winning landslide victories in 1980 and 1984 don't count, eh otter?

Reagan won 50.8% of the votes in 1980 and 58.8% in 1984.  Hardly 'landslide victories'.  Don't confuse the electoral college for what the people voted for.  First past the post is notoriously outdated and undemocratic.  But Otter shouldn't be throwing stones, Ridings in Canada uses the exact same system.  Strange how the English speaking world is always a little bit behind the rest.

Spagh, I was referring to more contemporary times (apologies for the hyperbolic 'never') but I followed up and, wow, the popular vote vs the gerrymandered result in Reagan's case is particularly staggerring, no? If there were ever a case for reform...

@ Svip: Dare I say we're actually in a worse position these days. #secedeBC

I don't think Spaghetti is prepared to defend any of the points he made.

that whole paragraph reads like he just copied everything he heard on Fox News one afternoon.

Better idea: you become our 53rd state (behind Puerto Rico and Alberta).

Anyways, I hope that the people that are Ready! for Hillary? understand there are issues out there like the Clinton Foundation that has had several pay-for-play scandals, Benghazi, huge speaking fees from wall street banks, missing e-mail server, health issues, paying women less than men, and her clear lack of likability or charm as a political candidate.   Plus the fact that she is just plain old.  You guys can make the meme about old-white republicans, but with this field the only tired old-white guy is Jeb!.  Several latinos, an acclaimed neurosurgeon who's black, a female business owner, and a libertarian.  Sounds pretty diverse to me.

I mean I'm not crazy about any of them but I like Hillary Clinton by far the most out of all of the candidates. She's a lot more center than Obama, she's all around tougher and a better leader (read the books by people who worked in the Obama White House about his poor leadership qualities) and she's got a lot of political capital/influence.

I find criticisms about her speaking fees pretty funny; given that the conservative party always wants to say that democrats are anti business and anti hard work, so that republicans who work in business or wall street related stuff are these great job creators and entrepreneurs...  but if the Clintons are making bank then it's suddenly a big issue that requires investigations and scrutinization. She isn't really that secretive about it either... she's said more than a few times that she is highly privileged and has a ton of money, and has said "you shouldn't need to be the granddaughter of a former President and a Secretary of State to have the opportunity to succeed in America" in reference to her own granddaugther...

As for Benghazi, what exactly does that have to do with her? The idea that the Secretary of State is out there determining security contingents necessary for a consulate/embassy is just silly; and this tired old idea that "if she had woken up and answered the call at 3 am" has got to stop. Yeah ok Hillary Clinton could have saved everybody if she just woke up.

The acclaimed black neurosurgeon has already said some batsh*t insane stuff, like gay is a choice because people get ass raped in prison, the so called female business owner was a complete failure, Marco Rubio has no experience outside of a couple years in the Senate... I mean come on.

Well, D&D flows off the tongue better than DD&GP, but it doesn't mean that the latter isn't as much a part of this area of the forum as the former two. ;)

What are your honest thoughts on Jeb? I know that in a hypothetical Clinton v Bush showdown you'd place with your vote with Hillary, but as someone who would do so, what are your thoughts on the alternative?

He's alright. I wouldn't mind him being in charge at all, would just prefer Clinton. The whole "I would have invaded Iraq" thing last two weeks was a total f*ckup on his part and he's got to fix peoples' concerns in that department. Truth be told all those conservative social policies that he supports really turns me away.

Jeb Bush is a useless f/ck.

in almost every way that matters (in terms of policy positions) he's identical to or worse than his brother.

it's also recently been revealed (as if it were any surprise) that his campaign team is made up of more than 20 George W Bush-alumni advisors, mostly in the foreign policy and financial sectors. this is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad sign. he wants to bring back to the White House the exact same team of players who are responsible for perhaps the worst 10 years this country has experienced since the 1930s.

And systematically and purposefully lied to their own population in order to invade Iraq, which is turning into the biggest foreign policy disaster the US has ever been involved in. If there would be any kind of consistent world justice system many of them would have been convicted for war crimes.

I'm more than convinced a Paul presidency would destroy the American economy, creating the perfect conditions for the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism.

But you don't care about the nurses and doctors who will be enslaved too? You're such a socialist only caring for the lowly rung of workers and not the rest. #Nomoreslavery #Idontwantdoctorobamagivingmeacheckup #Spongebathsfromobama

Rand Paul is a f/cking loon.

before he was actually running he had some decent novel ideas (novel for the GOP) about social issues and military spending.

since announcing he's running he flipped on all of it. he doesn't stand a chance.

who else ya' got?

Are you an American-born citizen of the United States?

Will you be 35 or older by November 8th, 2016?

We need YOU to enter the race for the Republican Party presidential nominee!

There can only be one, and it might just be you!

yeah I'm afraid that Bernie is not electable to the general public.

that being said I really hope he could wind up on somebody's undercard or with a cabinet position at some crucial sector.

Santorum doesn't stand a chance either.

the GOP Clown Car sure is fillin' up fast. it's fun to watch but deep down it's horrifically depressing as well.

at least 2/3 of these candidates (R's and D's included) are just looking for exposure to help sell books or fund other projects or land a new private sector gig. most these clowns know they don't stand a chance in any realistic sense.

The GOP pool is for the majority comprised of a bunch of arse-clowns that are bound to slip up more than once and make even bigger arse-clowns out of themselves. The Democratic pool as it stands is largely unremarkable save for the obvious and Bernie Sanders, who will be painted as a filthy un-American socialist, which might as well be a carnal sin in the current US political reality. As much as I dislike her personally, unless we get a surprise bid from someone unexpected and big enough to challenge Clinton, which I deem highly highly doubtful, it will be Clinton.

@Sivp
Popular with what? 15% of the US population tops?

As much as I have learned about him he's nearly everything I despise.

If Wank Paul is going to put an argument about free health care being bad then state real statistics about it instead of attempting to be put your name in the history book of quotes. Doctors and dentists in the British NHS get paid six figure salaries, nothing to worry about.

A President battle of Hillary Clinton vs Rand Paul will (and hopefully) result in a Clinton landslide. Hopefully the Republicans will get the same treatment that the UK Labour party got a few weeks ago.
